People who are whining about it's CCP's fault for not able to play the game. THERE IS LITTLE THEY CAN DO AGAINST A DDOS!

Ddos are cheap yet terrible effective, They will clog up servers with packages. And if the server migrates and the scriptkiddies want to keep it down they just move their attacks to the new location.

I played world of warcraft for 8 years and they never lost the servers due to a DDoS attack.

I also played WoW and there is no need for DDoS because Blizzard would bust their servers by themselves often enough.

Blizzard was spanked like a couple of months ago.

It is not quite true to say there is nothing that can be done against a DDOS.

After reading your posts, one could be forgiven for suspecting you of being the script kiddie responsible for the attacks, attempting to use ideology to justify them but knowing deep down that you just want some attention. Whether that's true or not, people pay money to play this game not because they don't have a choice, not because the company makes them, but because they want to. Whether someone is trying to send an ideological message or just make CCP look bad, the question of whether or not they should be able to defend against a DDOS is irrelevant next to the more pertinent question of what sort of shitstain makes an attack against gamers like this in the first place?

what viable targets like
Banks, Governments & suchlike ....

there's serious jail time attached to those targets
games companies is just a slapped wrist in comparison

I demand some sort of compensation - I had to leave my basement for a few hours.

Does the above now make me a 'real' Eve Online player?

Joking, of course.

Well done CCP getting us up and running again.

Throughout the day the servers have been terribly unstable and it seems to be continuing into the night. Is CCP going to fix this DDoS crap or are we destined to be unable to play for days? It's seriously not hard to safeguard against a DDoS.

I am sure CCP would be happy to pay you handsomely if you can provide 100% DDoS protection for them.

Until then, please stop making a complete fool of yourself in the forums.

Humm!

Tranquility - Attacked!
Dust 514 - Severely down on players at similar times, so I am assumed it was Attacked!
Serenity - Still Down starting at a similar time, so I am assumed it was attacked and has not yet recovered!
Forums - Difficult to get onto last night, so I assume they were part of the attack!

CCP must have right royally pissed someone off to get such a comprehensive and sustained attack Sad

Where do they find so many computers to use for their attack?

You can scrub the traffic through a router farm dedicated to doing just that, using complex algorithms to mostly separate the bad and drop it while still sending the good on it's way.

But it's not something you just wave a wand and put in place.

It can be prohibitively expensive. It requires a break-in and development period where the scrubbers are programmed and tweaked for the specific network traffic they need to identify as safe and normal. On top of that you need specialized staff knowing how to adapt the programing to react to the various types of ddos that can be seen as well.

There's always a solution. It just isn't always an easy one, or realistic.

If I can offer you a suggestion:

you could contact tourny teams NOW and have them start accessing a separate IP caching website tonight/tomorrow
(and again if they think their IP has changed at any point)

Use that site to pool lists of source /24s for all the teams players.

Depending on how awesome your networking team is on the fly, you can inject communities with your upstream providers to just poison ALL routes to the cluster before it ever even reaches you....except that select list of /24s the team players are on.

Doesn't help the rest of the playerbase, but would work for 'the show must go on' tomorrow.

Infected PCs.

My tertiary connection gets affected now ... secondary still works ...
... are the servers getting attacked again?

So what's the overhead of these "complex algorithms"?
