There are many different cultures that play Eve, many people with different accents and some people who don't speak English at all. With that in mind, and spending a lot of time on different comms over the past few months I have noticed different ways in which ship names are ponounced:

The main ones I have noticed are as follows:

Abaddon -

I have noticed this ship said one of two ways:

A - bad - on.
Abba - don.

Caracal -

Probably the broadest range of scope has been for this ship. I have heard this called all sorts:

Ca - ra - cal.
Car - a - cel.
Ca - ruh - cul.

And a few other names for this I don't even want to try and spell phonetically.

Rokh -

Specifically only noticed this said one of two ways:

Rock.
Row - k.

Scythe -

Probably the oddest of them all to hear for me is this ship:

Sigh - th
Sky - th

So, how do you pronounce certain ship names and what is the oddest ship pronunciation you have heard? I am sure there are plenty more...

(Please note: Some of these (like the Scythe) I had a hard time spelling phonetically, please bare with it, I am aware that it is not necessarily correct).

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

I pronounce it the way my native language & accent dictates. Why would you expect any less?

I laugh whenever someone calls a scythe a "sith". That's a different sci-fi universe man! I was in one fleet where the scout was saying it that way, and it took the other twenty people in the fleet a few minutes to figure out what he was talking about. The scythe got away =(.

Abbadon is hebrew: Ǎḇaddōn.

A characal is English, a mammal: kærəkæl

Rokh is a fictional name. Whatever. I say Row-kh.

A Scythe is a tool, also English: saɪð

Out of all four, the Rokh is the only one that actually alows for interpretation or variation. The other 3 are pronounced either correctly or incorrectly.

Because not all people from the same area pronounce it the same way... For example, the Abbadon was pronounced two seperate ways from two people in California...

There is no "expect less", I'm just curious of the ways in which people have heard it said and also which is the correct way to say it (should a Dev care to answer).

Thanks for that, this is similar to what I was after. I've noticed there is a set way people say the names of things that there is only one specific way of correctly saying it. I was rather curious.

Haha that's one way of putting it... Primary ha...

Just curious if people have heard some others?

I'll have to remember that one!

"Shoot the grey thing... No not that one... The longer grey thing!!!"

Does that mean the Leviathan is the 'longest grey thing'?

True fact: Ashimmu in my hometown (Genoa, Italy) dialect means 'Hey, stupid!'.

This is funny. I've heard (and probably said) a lot of funny sounding pronunciations.

For the ones you listed, I'm partial to...

Abba-don, but have started with A-bad-don because of peer pressure.

Care-uh-cul, basically your third option, but I think this works better visually.

Rock. This is undeniable.

Sigh-th, that c is definitely silent.
