So, my cost of $20 for a PLEX is imaginary ?? As is it's ingame Market listings ? Ok. Got it. I now understand there is no correlation there at all.

It's stunning that a troll group of game players are not just happy at actually getting respectful acknowledgement in the press.

I guess it's not the "right kind" of press, since it didn't outline the entire history of EVE's economic system and how it ties in to PLEX, GTC's, and RMT, how ships are made exactly, and a HUNDRED OTHER NIT-PICKY DETAILS that are interesting and accurate but would turn this story into a 10 PAGE LONG BORE-FEST OF BOILERPLATE TEXT that nobody but nobody will EVER READ.

But that is clearly what is being asked for here.

The deception is that it works both ways.

Eg, you can take your 630m ISK and refund it for $20 back in your wallet. You can't do this obviously (well, you can but it is against the rules and you almost certainly wouldn't get the full $20 back).

This leads the general public to think things like "why didn't they just buy a house with all that spacebux or donate to charity?"

Just to drive this point home - the PLEX For Good campaign didn't make international news (as far as I know). But this event did.

That was my first thought too, but it turns out it's an Associated Press article that Yahoo. Which explains why it's coherent and addresses the basic Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of an informative journalistic article. Original Yahoo articles never really manage to hit all of those.

It doesn't work both ways, but it doesn't really matter. The number is just to give a rough estimate as to the amount of the destruction. And obviously nobody could run off and buy a house with that money, even if it were possible (and legal) to transfer ISK into $, since there were thousands of players involved.

Sorry, but as long as CCP's only answer to crushing slow gameplay is TiDi converting regions of space from a realtime game into a turn-based one, the large fleet fight of EvE online remains a lie vs how it is marketed & reported on.

I keep waiting for ONE journalist to get the truth on this in their articles...should be called 'TidiGate' of course.

all this exposure is different sites posting the same AP article with a different headline

and WSJ = FOX who also posted it

so really only one reporter gave a crap and wrote about it, but the dollar sums made it newsworthy
it was just a few weeks ago that the NY Times did a big article on some poor bastard addicted to Castle Siege or whatever it is.

"Exchange Rate" makes it sound like CCP are selling isk for money. later in the article they say it only works one way, but an exchange rate cant work one way. It doesn't take a novel to say "Game time can be purchased converted to plex (an in game Item) and resold in game to other players for isk (Eve Online's game currency)."
