Open Letter to the Aidonis Foundation Directorate

Directors of the board of the Aidonis Foundation,

Since YC 10, the Aidonis Statue has been awarded to those that have significantly advanced the cause of peace and stability throughout New Eden. This is something that is most likely known to you, so why am I writing this to you?

Because this is something that, in my opinion, should be brought more into the limelight. Countless news broadcasts and articles are about war, and chaos, and death. Articles that bring hope and inspire people to create a better world are sometimes too few and far between, and often hard to find.
The Aidonis Statue is no exception in that regard. Although many people will probably find it easy to name high profile and controversial recipients of the award, such as Emperor Heideran VII and admiral Alexander Noir, I doubt many of those people will recall or easily find even one name of those who received the award since YC 109. It is more likely that they can find, if not remember the winners of the bloodsport called Alliance Tournament, or the death toll of the Seyllin disaster, or the number of people Sansha's nation uplifted in Umokka.

The past years, we have seen many things that could lead people to believe that the day that a durable peace will come about lies in a very distant future. I therefor request you to do your best future winners of the Aidonis Statue receive an amount of exposure fitting for their deeds. Do not be afraid to ask for help if financial means form constraints to do this. I think there are enough people who would be willing to aid in this matter.

Peace,

I fully support this. More attention should be put on positive rolemodels.

Have you ever thought of it that there aren't any people out there who deserve or should be granted one?

Or let me put it this way; if we go out there and give a Aiodonis just for the sake of giving out, don't we risk the award losing its worth?
We've already had one genocidal maniac given the award, I don't think the award needs any more discrediting to its name.

As a solution, if you want some positive role models, you can always get a job in The Scope's propaganda department and make some up. Problem solved.

I don't think this is what Mr. Biko was advocating for.

Are you asking for exposure simply for the sake of exposure? In this context, it would seem the individual is not what matters, but the action they perform. Why desire the celebrity of the one who committed the action? It seems like an unseemly method of attempting to counterbalance the news you do not like.

HEY!!! We're no-oh whatever.....
Clearly I'm not the peaceful type, but good luck on this project. Hope you get something out of it, Che.

Che, do you have anyone in mind as an award candidate?

I fully support this initative as CEO of the Aurora Arcology. Too few positive announcement have seen the light as of late.

Why? Quite possibly because publicising the action while censoring the identity of the person who enacted it is a waste of time and resources when the goal is to provide a beacon of inspiration and hope to the masses.

In this context, could you explain in a little more detail what you judge unseemly about this method?

Well, actually, I would prefer someone I did not know. Someone whose work has gone unnoticed.
But if that's not gonna be the case, maybe the Ishukone Corporation?

Unfortunately several messages did only make it through the network in such a garbled state that they where effectively unreadable.
For clarity and readability, the messages in question have been omitted from this discussion.

I've been watching the IGS ever since I returned to my pod about a month ago, and haven't seen anything but bad news. I'd fully support a return to something positive.

By creating publicity and celebrity, one runs the risk of turning the actions into popularity contests. Instead of actions being performed for their own sake, a culture of celebrity and limelights can begin to outshine any work actually done - maybe even get to the point where words and celebrity alone could qualify someone to win such an award. Is this a guaranteed result? No. But it is a perpetual risk of publicity-based functions.

The Aidonis Foundation will need to work very hard for me to greet their return to the limelight with anything but disdain.

They can start by choosing their 'winners' more carefully.

You're making a slippery slope argument then.

The Aidonis awards are not decided on via popular vote or publicity-based functions. The outcome is not based on who features more often in the lead-in celebrity stories of tabloid media operators. They are decided on merit by the Foundation itself and they often go to men and women that confound the popular opinion on who should receive them. They have been publically announced several times in the past and at no point did the outcome you note as a risk eventuate.

As such there seems to be little chance of it descending into the popularity contest you fear it will. These are some of the factors the slippery slope aspect of your position ignores, some of the factors which would almost certainly prevent the smooth slide from cause A to effect B.

Is it a risk? Yes, but one so negligible as to be insignificant. It is not a guaranteed result, it is not even a likely result.
