The cap was in place to provide a better experience in the system, nothing more sinister than that. We raised it 4 times during the event and at peak had over 2100 in system, but with notably bad lag that TiDi could not prevent. Basically, we didn't want to compromise user experience for numbers.

At which point does it become valid to call 'BS' on the whole 'single shard sandbox' claim, when there are so many performance protecting constraints, caps & TiDi workarounds that its not really true?

I have some suggestions for updated 'single shard sandbox' marketing claims:

"Single shard sandbox, sort of..."

or

"Single shard sandbox, so long as its only 2,000 people in each system..."

or

"Single shard sandbox, so long as you don't mind huge TiDi lag..."

or

"Single shard sandbox, so long as you schedule large events away from north american prime time..."

or

Understandable and a good idea on paper, but hopefully this changes the planning for next time. Lag vs being completely locked out. Personally, i can handle 10% ti di, and all that since I can still be involved in convo, story etc. So it comes down, how to to spread the population out? Was the 2000 peeps an anomaly or can it be expected more? What were the demographics like? people there to roleplay and story? Or people there to pvp?

To quote Lfod Shi

The ratting itself is PvE. Getting away with it is PvP.

There is a point at which TiDi can't stop crashes happening. The system stood right on the edge of that for a while with a lot of people crashing when they warped off grid to attempt to reship or leaving the fight. TiDi reached 10% very briefly according to my system at one point, it sat at 11% for a decent amount of time. That means the system had 0 slack left in it, and more lag was going to start causing real lag issues rather than just TiDi & GPU issues.
