They are not a sign of wealth but infact the opposite, I think the average wearer can just about afford one. It is like wearing a fake Rolex, anyone who is anyone knows what it is.

I'm not buying a monocle till you can wear sunglasses over top of it. And preferably have monocles on both eyes.
