I always pictured that morning of the Boot.ini effect as CCP all lined up, and the general in front saying "What we do today will echo in gaming history for eternity!" You know, "Gladiator" style?

The cake does look fantastic though.

I think players who frequent the test servers have an idea of what we might be up to, but it will surface soon... Big smile

... by not deleting the file. The details are in the devblog I linked but essentially instead of deleting the file (which failed and we deleted a file with same name in the root folder instead) and copying a new file in its place we simply overwrote the file.

For those affected (mostly laptop users with a recovery partition) then Customer Support worked with them to restore their systems. In the end it was remarkably few who were affected.

Jokes aside, then 5 and 6 Dec 2012 mark the 5 year anniversary of the Trinity expansion and the boot.ini incident. It is in hindsight one of the more hilarious bugs in the gaming industry. I hope you have all recovered and forgive us. Smile

I can't say that "hilarious" is the correct word considering that there were quite a few people who's PC's got hosed that day. Some people clever enough to fix the issue quickly...others would have had to format and reinstall their OS if they didn't know hot to properly fix that problem.

Just saying...choice of words may not have been the best in this case. Glad you guys learned your lesson and it has not happened again though.

It was only hilarious in hindsight when we had helped those affected. But other words I could have chosen? Embarrassing, stupid, epic, ...

No... I get that part, I was asking about how one would recover from having the boot.ini file deleted.

If Windows didn't recover on its own (which it did in the vast majority of cases) then you needed an install disk and to re-install on top of the existing install to re-instate the boot.ini file. This did preserve settings and installed software in most cases. There were exceptional cases with special setups where a full re-install was required or other methods were required (such as connecting the hard disk to another computer and re-creating the boot.ini file by hand).

I wouldn't be so sure about that... look in-game market Special Edition assets section and apparel under it.. there's Boots.ini shoes now for women and if you click the 3D view you'll see funny text. Blink

Oh, by the way, there's also item called "Key Pass to Open the Door blueprint". Anyone know yet where you can find one of those? Lol All the other materials seem to be available on market except for "Villard wheel"...

So, was that CCP Guards first walk on (or should I say "fly by") role in a CCP video? If so, is it true he was much taller before this video? Smile
