Maybe if you didn't include this part it would have come off better. Did you ever ask yourself that maybe, just maybe it is ok to not be ok with being called (whatever mean stuff v0v)?

Anyways, this is getting off topic a bit. The guy doesn't care for the immaturity that seems to bust out at the seams when it comes to PvP. That is his point of view. Just because you are ok with the immaturity, does not mean he is wrong to not be ok with it. You popping in here with, "I know it is wrong, but you are wrong to not be ok with it being wrong." is just silly. P

That was one sentence out of three paragraphs. It seems like you're throwing out the baby along with the dirty diaper.

Look, I'm not saying that people have to be fine with being insulted online. What I did say was that it's inevitable that someone will insult you, so you'd be much better off learning to deal with it instead of relying on avoidance, which at some point is guaranteed to fail.

And there's nothing wrong with my claim that people who have zero tolerance for asshattery don't belong on the Internet. They really don't have any business signing into a social online environment, just like epileptics have no business watching Pokemon episode #38, and people with arachnophobia have no business moving to Florida. *shudders*

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

It is clear that we are not going to change each others opinion on the matter, especially on the forums. We will have to agree to disagree. If you would like to continue this debate regardless, feel free to eve mail me anytime.

The real problem is that we're disagreeing over what I said, instead of the message I'm trying to convey. I said "apple," and you said "nuh-uh, you said 'orange'."

And then I look at you, bug-eyed, and ask "what?" Because I clearly confirmed that it's okay to not be okay with someone being mean to you online, and you act as if I've taken the exact opposite stance.

You said more than that. P Anyways, back on topic. This thread is for those who avoid/can't/won't PvP a chance to voice the reasons why they don't. No matter how you or I feel about it.

Idea being to gain a better understand in what makes the nonPvPers tick. Maybe there is some information that we, as a community and CCP can use to help address some things. Maybe not. Regardless I feel strongly about this thread and feel it has somehow managed to not turn to crap like most of the threads on these forums.

I have read every single word of every single post and will continue to do so hopefully with an open mind. I thought about making a sister thread that asks players why the PvP, but I have a feeling that would get insane real fast. Lol

I do pvp, but when I was new to EVE I avoided it for quite a long time. Not because I was not interested; in fact the prospect of doing pvp in the future was the only thing motivating me to keep playing EVE right from the start. But I'm the type who wants to do things the right way and not do a hundred stupid things on my way to learning how it's done right.

So, main reason was that I wanted to feel prepared regarding character skills as well as knowledge about pvp. Of course I fell into the trap and never reached the point where I felt prepared, it always was "next week, next month I will be ready, but not yet".

My miserable existence as a hisec miner and mission-runner on the verge of quitting the game was finally redeemed by outside factors, i.e. non-consensual pvp: A small corp of experienced players declared war on my corp and we and them had the singular good luck to have found people not running away and hiding in the face of a threat. They forced the war upon us, but it was just the thing we needed at that time to wake the lust for pvp in us and not wait and 'prepare' any longer.

These guys wardeccing us are probably responsible for that I'm still playing EVE :)

Secondary but also important reason: Implants and training time. Losing ISK was never a huge issue for me, but losing even an hour of training time by using cheap implants was. When you start as a newbie in a game where most other players have years of a perceived 'head start', then you feel you can't afford to lose any training time. So you are in a position that your skills and your wallet allow you only to use T1 cruisers or BCs, but you have a hundred million ISK or more worth of implants in your head. This stopped me from venturing into low or null many a time.

Posting in yet another thread where people worry more about how others play the game, rather than how they themselves play the game. Pointless posts are pointless.

I have nothing against you or your play style, and your choice whether or not to pvp is yours and yours alone, but please. please don't bring real-life morality into a discussion about shooting people in video games. Your intent might be amicable, but by doing so, you essentially become the soccer mom who blames Grand Theft Auto for the local school shooting. When you rationalize video game violence with moral stances, you hurt both gaming and freedom of expression as a whole.

Also (and don't consider this as anything but friendly advice), you need to work on developing a thicker skin toward interaction with other people on the Internet. Once again, there's nothing wrong with having a type-B personality (heck, I have one myself), but if you can't deal with some 13-year-old calling you a ****** every once in a while, you should probably not be online in the first place.

Quick edit: and the reason you need to work on a thicker skin isn't because you have some obligation to do so, or because some stranger told you to, but because it will help you cope when some 13-year-old inevitably does call you a ******, and despite your best efforts, you won't be able to avoid reading/hearing his words.

The part of my morality that keeps me from PvPing isn't that PvP occurs. I play TF2 and Left4Dead and other games like that. The part that keeps me from PvPing in Eve is the "non-consensual" clause. I accept it exists. I choose not to take advantage of it. To expand on my RL comparison earlier I don't walk down the street and hit people but I do hit them at Kickboxing practice. Sorry, I should have been more clear. I have no problem with video game violence and I don't think games are causing violence. I just don't want to willingly ruin someone's day if I can avoid it because in the end there is another person on the other side of a character.

As for the way people act I can handle it. It doesn't upset me usually. I just chose not to put myself in a position to have it occur. Belive me, I am in school to be a High School teacher. If my skin were all -that- thin I'd be doomed Bear . In a video game though I'd just rather not be subjected to it if I don't have to be. I simply don't find being called names terribly relaxing whether they bother me all that much or not.

Neither do I. But, to continue the analogy, all of EVE is like a big FFA kickboxing practice (the various sec bands are different rooms with different tournament rules). There is no non-consensual PvP in EVE because you consented when you signed up. It may be unexpected, but don't tell me you've never been caught off guard and surprised by your opponents kick.

I accept that to be part of Eve. You accept and I gather from your responses in this thread even exploit that part of Eve. We're both on the same page there. I even mentioned it in an earlier post that I understand that to undock is to face the dangers of the universe outside. Maybe we could even be said to be different sides of the same coin. However, I also accept that there are people in Eve who don't feel that way. Spectators is perhaps a good analogy. Maybe even spectators standing on the mat during a fight. Are they foolish for thinking they are safe there? I will grant that. I just choose not to be the one who teaches them the dangers of being too complacent. I'll leave that up to the people who enjoy doing so and don't hold it against them. I only really dislike PvPers when they're blatant jerks about it.

We both know Eve is a harsh place. Where I warn other people of that fact and hope they listen a PvPer teaches them a harsh lesson. PvPers have goals just like I have goals. If we meet then may the person with the better plan win the day.

Fair enough.

I like to warn people about the dangers and explain how to avoid them using words too, but I think the fact that I occasionally teach people first hand makes people too mad at me to listen. Oh well.

(I also think that the only EVE Spectators are the people reading about it in the news)

I generally don't PvP, because for all the bragging "pvp'ers" do, they don't actually PvP either.

The only real PvP I have access to is lo-sec, I'm not interested in joining alliances in null. So that means, in low.. this is what you have access to:

People that play docking games.

People that gate camp.

PvPPPPPPPPP

I roam around in a frigate when I'm bored and don't feel like doing anything else. I generally attack anything I find. In 6 hours I managed to have one good fight. I managed to get someone ratting, in a BC. Had a good fight but his drones popped me. He called out "GF" in local, and that was that. Good stuff.

99.5% of the rest of my encounters though? People that exploit flagging mechanics, or don't have the balls to fight by themselves. Either that, or people that stop fights so their friends can join in for the killmail. I went after a Tengu in my T1 frigate, he started backing off and ran away after he got 50% into his shields. He ran away from my T1 frigate.

Lo-sec sucks, and null alliances are depressing. I'd honestly rather mine, lo-sec is that bad. Camping a gate or station for hours, oh my so exciting. Padding my killmails in a large gang with 'no risk'.. so much balls, so exciting.

If I end up doing any serious pvp, it will be in w-space where people either choose to fight or sit in their ******* bubble.

Is not just login time Akirei. EvEmon time, Forum Time, evefit time, dotland time, singularity time, etc. You can't just login, strap whatever modules you have in hangar and go fight. You need to do your homework. And that takes more time than a casual player has.

I do exactly that. Log in, fit some random ship, go get it blown up, log out.
I couldn't care less if I live or die.
Most of the time I CAN'T AFFORD to lose the ship I'm flying as I would have to go scavenge through assets and what not to be able to get back out there and get blown up again. Admittedly, most of my income comes from people who are generous and donate to me because they have 2 bill + and Don't have anything to spend it on.
If I feel like fighting - I'll log in and pvp. If I don't, I'll log in and rat in Venal. Neither of the two - I'll log in and just listen to whats going on on coms or whatever. Rarely do I look up fits on. I don't know what dotlan is either. Never used EvE Fitting Tool or EvEMon in all my time playing eve because it was exactly that - took too much time. Before the fitting tool changes within the game client, the way I calculated if my fit was good or not, "Am I doing this right PvP-wise?" was "If I'm not dying, this must be a decent fit. If I am dying, I need to change something next time."

Then again, I don't take this game nearly as seriously as I probably should.

I don't enjoy PVP. I would much rather bounce from profession to profession. Shoot some rocks for a while, recycle underpriced items for a while, then move materials from point a to point b. I do like the fact that Eve is a full loot PVP game. It adds a little edge to play.

I also solo every MMO I have played. It is just the way I enjoy the game.

Sometimes, the approach to MMO reminds me of the people who kept re-rolling characters in pen & paper until they got the stats they wanted.

I fly ships fitted to complement my play style, not to max this or that.
I multitask my skills to compliment my play style rather than created uber (fill in the profession) characters

In the end, I am just here to enjoy myself and burn up free time.
