Heh.

Good god, NeX is a joke. Give us real content, not ******* shirts. And for ****'s sake, this isn't an arcade game. Microtransactions don't belong.

That said, I still do look forward to actual content in my ambulation.

Whether or not you win the game matters not.  It's if you bought it.

I don't mind that there's a major station revamp cutting in line. That part of EVE has been broken longer than Incarna. Ditto sov, for that matter.

What I really don't understand is the idea that "you want social? there's chat!" Yeah, I played all-text MU*s too, once. I went back to one a couple of years ago and it's totally dead, even though it has a large and richly described world, a well-elaborated combat system, far more robust chat than any MMO has, and (at one time) a relatively large player base. Astonishingly, people prefer graphics, even when the graphical rendering severely limits their options--which it almost always does. People like to see things and hear things; you can convey a lot more information a lot more quickly, for one thing. A lot of people like to be immersed, and the more immersion, the better.

If you'd rather be  and distance yourself from the game as much as possible, knock yourself out. TeamSpeak and its eye-gouging, sanity-compromising excuse for an interface will still be around, and I'm sure that chat's not going anywhere. If it does go away, I'm sure Google chat will still be around, or AIM. You can stay in your pod and rely on 1970s technology as much as you'd like. You could probably even convince CCP to render the chat text in your choice of amber or green, in the old VT100 font.

As for the lore, apparently the technology in EVE never improves and nobody ever figured out how to make the cloning technology more robust. That stuff is fluff; it can be and will be rewritten whenever CCP wants to rewrite it.

I had posted a brainstorm idea about WIS a while back https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1513775#post1513775

It seems that there will always be people in the forums that bash any new idea no matter how interesting it may be. I, for one, would love to see WIS take shape. Currently, what they have is pointless.

For CCP, It all comes down to a major road block though. It is extremely hard to render multiple avatars in the same location. That is why we are all locked in our own tiny cells in stations. Whether it be the fact that these are resources that CCP just doesn't have, or just don't have the capital for at this time. Its kind of the opposite with SWTOR if you think about it. Walking around on planets allows you to interact with others, but the spaceship side of things is just YOU, and that's it. Maybe one of these days they will figure it out. But I think they need a ton more subscribers to even think about continuing the WIS project.

Maybe as an alternative to the canned devblog, Team Avatar could do one that has a live demo of multiple avatars in the one environment, to show that it is possible.

It probably is, but...
Remember Id demonstrating Doom 3 a year or two before actual release and that monster of a graphical station they brought to do that? Yeah. Running the same thing on your average (by standarts of that time) PC, now that's another story.

So even if they could do that, there's nothing for us in it so far.

Well, it's been a week now without so much as a whisper from CCP about WiS. It would
seem that the entire staff has been muzzled on the topic.

This silence leads me to believe there is some serious discusion going on as to how
to proceed from this point on. I fear they are going to cancel the project all together,
which imo is the better choice rather than strining people along a few more years with
vapo-ware promises. That's just not good for CCP's reputation.

So, how is canceling WiS going to play out?

If they are to cancel it, they will need to remove the CQ as it will be a constant reminder
of a failed project and people(especially new players) will constantly be asking what
purpose it serves, and why they don't release more content for it. Serioulsy, it's been
a year now with a door that wont open, and they say that may not happen for a few
more years? This can't be allowed to continue as is.

Now, with the CQ gone, the NeX store will now be 100% useless as opposed to the 95%
useless it is now without common areas. So, the NeX should be removed as well. That
then leaves the question of full body view. Remove it too, we don't need to have bodies
or even faces for that matter, we should just have ship avatars to present ourselfs. This
is after all a game about spaceships, and only spaceships I keep getting told.

Now that we have succesfully purged the failed project, what does EVE look like now?

It seems far from canceled to me. They're taking a completely different approach to WiS now than before Incarna. Prototyping methods of gameplay with the Unity engine seems like a much better idea than creating tons of art assets for a chat room.

We'll likely not see any WiS developments for at least a year and more than likely two. When they revisit WiS it's going to have to blow people away from the beginning. Hopefully CCP doesn't go public anytime soon.

This shows what WiS would look like with CCP's avatars and an actual person controlling them, in an actual station with other avatars.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52FYhyla9EA

On the PS3 as part of dust.

The avatar in a station part is about half way though. It is in something called the Event Horizon Lounge. At one point you can even see a planet out a window. Note that CCP is handling the scene complexity issue by having avatars that are far away look like hollow shells. They are just reducing the resolution as needed to keep reasonable performance.

(How powerful is the graphics processor in a PS3 compared to what is in a typical PC?)

Its not clear to me if that lounge is only accessible when you first set up an account or if its always accessible. And we got no idea if the merger of Eve and Dust will let us pod pilots in there as well.

Sadly yes we do have an idea. We won't have WiS(for a few years at least) so we won't be able to
interact with the Dust players.

Putting so much time and effort Dust and so much hype into the link between EVE and Dust
is going to be a complete waste of time without actuall interaction between the games in the
form of a 3D human avatar meet 'n greet. Unless they are holding back something special,
I don't see how you are to plan in real time with some Dust mercs you have hired. Text chat?
please say no.

From what? The dropping of Team Avatar's blog? That could also be read as:

"We do not want to put out a blog on wreck exploration with avatars when in just a few weeks Sisi will have avatars from eve and dust interacting. It will just get subscribers calling bait and switch, and we have had enough of that with avatar features already."

We can only dream.

If they drop Avatar interaction on us with the realease of Dust I will **** enough
bricks of joy to build a full sized replica of the pyramid at Giza.
