I got a little further to the cause, this is what happens on my side:

My cable modem has a 1, maybe 2 second period of 100% packet loss (for pings anyway), after which the line is clear again for a long time. This small window of no communication seems enough for the client to see a true loss of connection and it just gives up or the server boots it for being out of sync! The constant, but small amounts of packet loss near CCP's end of the server do not seen to cause the instability in my case.

A CCP developer should look closely at the network layer and the communication protocol between client and server, especially the error handling on both sides!. It looks like the code panics far more often then is necessary!

CCP should also consider having a client side spool/log of the last minute or so of communication that once connection is re-established, this information is uploaded for analysis. Even if you close the client after a disconnect and start again later, sending this information can greatly help to improve connection stability. If something similar is done on the server side for clients who's socket is closed, they got a full communication sequence to analyze!

The beauty of this approach is that all clients from all over the world help to monitor and debug the connection layer!

I agree completely, payed attention to what you said and i get for a second 100% packet loss then it goes down...

Just a quick update...

I had been using AT&T DSL for the last 5 years and was having NO issues playing EVE. That is until this "Socket closer error"

Just to show how much I do enjoy playing EVE, I had Time Warner High speed internet installed at home last week to compare the 2 ISP's.

I am running both of them... each computer has it own dedicated connection to each individual ISP.

DSL of course comes across the phone line (2wire).

Time Warner is Cable.

They both have great upload & download speeds. And I have very good Ping Plotter results from each of them hitting the CCP server.

And YES, I am still seeing the ERROR on both ISP's...

I then setup a system at Work and we have very good bandwidth there... Same problem after about 5 min of play.

So please, if you think this is an ISP problem and not CCP responsibility to fix, you are out of your mind.

GET THIS FIXED CCP!!!!!

As I said. It cannot be bad network connection and/or packet loss if there is a fleet disconnect from 4 memebers all over the world in similar time frame. So we all have bad connection? Sorry if level of connection to run EVE is so high, then better 50% of us stop playing a game. Il2 sturmovik can run no problem online, EVE cant? Cmon. Il2 is more sensitive to lag and so on then eve.

I am ok for last few days. But I am afraid it is just luck. I hope not but... it happened before. And come back with vengeance.

In 10 years of eve I've never had serious connection issues that weren't easily identifiable as being my ISP's issue.

Since moving to Sky Fibre recently I have started seeing sockets closed on a highly regular basis and losing my connection.

One of the tools I have seen people using is ping plotter but I don't really know how to interpret the results.

Link to ping plotter image

I am presuming the red and black spikes are periods of latency and packet loss?
Does the fact that the spikes appear on every hop that the loss is somehow originating at my end?

Its been two weeks with no improvements.

I don't understand and i need a explanation, my jimmies are starting to rustle. really wish i didn't pay for 3 months of eve right before this happened, bad luck on my part.

i guess ill save 14.95 a month now

New patch, no improvement. My 3rd computer still gets connection closed after 5-15 minutes of play.

The other computers with similar install, OS etc. all never get a connection closed.

I was wondering what brand/chipset of network card you have in the systems that do not get disconnected? Compared to the network card in the system that gets the disconnects?

At this point in the game, I am going to start looking for anything that could be a root cause. Maybe CCP has something in the code that is not working properly with certain Ethernet chipsets.

Its all just shooting in the dark at this point... But it looks like we are all on our own here since CCP is not going to help us with it.

We may as well all work together and see if we can figure out what it might be.

The more eyes we have on this the better, and it looks like we have ALLOT!!!! P

I am at work right now, but will be checking what I have in my system and will replace it with another card to see what happens when I get home.

I will update my findings later.

This suddenly started happening to me as well. Everything was working earlier this morning and yesterday, now I get the "lost connection to socket" error, very annoying.

Big error on the internet in Europe

A large error makes the connection for slow internet users in both Sweden and Europe right now.

- All operators are affected, "says John Thompson, manager at Telia.

Thomson says he does not know what the problem is, but it does internet traffic slow.

- You can say that there are two paths for Internet traffic from Sweden. One is the stop in. Even if it is not quite so simple.

The fault lies with Vodafone, but because Telia is one of the largest operators in Europe are also other operators' traffic on their network. Therefore suffering right now, one million Internet users by sporadically very slow connections.

Thomson can not say exactly how many Swedish users concerned.

At 23:30 o'clock, he stated to TT that the fault lay somewhere between Frankfurt and London.

Guys I have found the problem after long discussions and checks. I am an MD of a UK ISP and some of our subscribers have been contacting us about these issues.

The problem is Telia.net which is on most of the traceroutes shown on this thread (but not all). They may be shown as just London on some traceroutes depending on where you live.

It is not a CCP issue - I have contacted Telia who are currently upgrading some of their systems with works due for completion by 1st March 2013.

Telia cannot handle all connections currently being thrown thrown at it and will strop routing your traffic to make way for higher priority traffic such as government usage and business high priority services. This is when you get the socket errors as they have effectively closed the door for a few seconds which is enough for Eve to trip out producing the error. (EVE SHOULD BE HIGH PRIORITY EvilEvilEvil)

The only way to reroute is to ensure you do not have a static ip - then go into cmd - ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew.

This will give you a new ip from your router but also change the route that ip takes - not always though so after every renew run a traceroute and check if telia or london are present if so retake the above steps - once you find an ip that doesnt route through these record the ip and make it static inside your router.

This will fix this issue until telia have completed their upgrade.

Some of the traces posted do not contain this information (about 5%) so their issues must be something client side unrelated to the above.

Anyone able to help confirm the above? Or is CCP able to help confirm this? I see over the last few pages there has been no input from CCP to this problem.....come on CCP...u add a useless feature of lines between stars on screen but cant offer any useful advice with this problem? I have so far not seen CCP add even a 'possible solution' to this (if there is someone please post and i will grovel for forgiveness).

Tonight i had the socket closed message, logged bk in and somone i know (also from UK) had the same message at the same time. We both then DC'd about 2 mins later.

I can also confirm the socket closed error is still happening as well as the softlock client freeze/lockup.

I'm on Fairpoint 15mbit/1mbit DSL

10 Clients (2 standard client) and 8 on isboxer. No other game has disconnection issues only eve.

My ping is also around 20ms A- to A+ ratings per speedtest.

Im not sure what happened but I am having the same problems other mac users are having. Socket keeps closing. I am not sure if it is mere coincidence or what But since Retribution came out I can't play for more than like 10 min before I have to force quit and re log back in.

On another note I switched internet providers and about the same time Ret came out and thats when this stuff started. Now I am not sure if it is a problem on CCP's end or my end by sometimes I have played for 8 straight hours with two clients running, safari, mail, etc on and I was able to play. Other times I have one client with NOTHING else running and I play for 2 min and it freezes.

Please If anyone can help that would be awesome. Because I absolutely love this game and I don't want to stop playing it but right now I have a month left and if this problem persists I am not going to re sub again until this issue if resolved.

I am running on the 2010 MBP everything is up to date that I know of, so I'm not sure what the problem is but I hope it is fixed quickly.

I renewed some of my equipment few weeks ago (I had an old, overheating and thus faulty DSL modem) so I got back my stable DSL line at very least but with EVE, the occasional 'Socket Closed' errors persist.

Those errors disappeared for a while maybe two or three weeks ago but now they're back again and boy if it isn't a barrage of disconnects with this game at the moment.

Seems they fixed in 1.1.4. Patch notes don't seem to indicate the root cause of the drops though.

EDIT: Drop occurred again at 12pm EST
