I was getting constant disconnects and figured i'd try a few things to see if it would fix it. the first thing i did was reset my modem and my router. then i set up a VPN to the UK since im from the states. so far, i haven't gotten disconnected yet.

I reset them both as well, but not the VPN thing. That was sufficient to eliminated the issue.

I turned off VPN to test and was disconnected 10 minutes into the game. VPN fixes the problem, at least for me.

VPN should not fix your problem, the problem is with CCP.....dont patch things up for them.

im not gonna sit through constant disconnects waiting for them to fix a problem that they may never even fix. if your in the states, i would suggest trying this out, its cheap, and it works.

If VPN is fixing the problem then it sounds like the issue is ISP based. I have asked those who submitted bug reports on this issue to confirm their location and ISP but neither of them have gotten back to me yet. If others experiencing the problem can do likewise it will help us confirm one way or the other.

I get closed socket errors as well but only on my laptop. I have never had the issue with my desktop. My ISP is Time Warner Roadrunner based in North Texas.

If the VPN solved your connection issue...it sounds like it might be one of a router in your direct route that has an issue. The vpn would allow you to bypass it.

Thank you Sione Tolutau.

I wanted to highlight your post to show people which information they should include in their petitions about the socket closed issue. Having all this information makes it a lot easier for us to figure out who, in this long trace, is responsible for dropping the ball/package.

PS. You might not see the package loss via ping -t if only packages within specific port rages get dropped.

c'mon CCP, this problem dates back four years, it should have been dealt with a long time ago... if it helps i was connected to the same wireless network the other day with a mate and i got the socket close and he didnt. We were both using laptops and yet i got the error whilst he kept playing. One laptop (that was fine) was a medion erazer, the other (which has the problems) is an acer aspire. Both have nvidia gfx cards (i know its a connection problem but its worth saying anyway).
I think its time CCP finally dealt with this four years down the line...
Otherwise its a great game, good job with it.

will throw my hat in the ring here, since Inferno i have had 8 disconnects for a closed socket, prior to inferno i never even knew this window existed. And now i get disconnected and oddly get 2 popups at the same time for the error every time lol

The window for the disconnect is new with Inferno - before Inferno your client restarted automatically after being disconnected (without giving a reason on what happened). Getting 2 popups at the same time might be a (minor) bug - please make a screenshot the next time this happens and attach it to a bugreport (please add my name in the subject of the bugreport).

I was also having this issue. I tried restarting my laptop, modem, and router, none of that helped. I realized I began having the problem after I started using steam. I opened task manager and steam was running in the background. Ended that process and havent had the error since.

Can somebody else verify that Steam is causing Close Socket errors?

I've had this problem for a month wether I am running a vpn or not seems to make no difference. Today I was disconnected 8 times during two hours.

From mid January up until a month ago I did not have a single disconnect and everything but EVE works flawlessly, other games apps etc. so I doubt it's my PC.

The strange thing is that some days I can play without any problems but the next the socket error is back.

This problem has been occurring for me since the last inferno patch. (approximately 2 weeks now).

It happens to my laptop (MacBook Pro on wireless network) and my desktop (PC wired connection). It has been happening every few hours.

My ISP is Comcast and I am based on the West Coast, U.S.

Edit: I do not have steam.
