That whole ship balancing thing..

The way it was described, CCP is going to adjust ship stats and capabilities base on role instead of tier. Slow heavy hitters, fast, lightly armoured strike craft etc. This clearly means that ships within the same faction fleet will have differing capabilities. Does it mean, however, that Minmatar ships will no longer be all fast, and Amarr/Caldari as much slower ships overall? Will Amarr pilots have the choice between a slow, heavily armoured cruiser as well as a fast, hunter/killer ship as well? It's an interesting thought in terms of how to rebalance the factions, instead of just having a race that's all speed, another race that only does armour tanking etc.

Most likely, the overall racial differences will be the same — the difference is between what used to be tiers, which will now be roles instead. Sure, if you compare “off-role”, the relationships might suddenly be reversed, but if you look at the fleet as a whole, it will be same as now.

So the Amarr heavy-hitter will hit heavier than the Minny version; the Minny speedster will be faster than the Amarr one; but the Amarr speedster will be significantly faster (and hit much lighter) than the Amarr heavy hitter, and will probably even be faster than the Minmatar heavy hitter (which, in turn, will actually hit harder than the Amarr speedster).

…if that made any sense whatsoever. P
