Make probes destructable

Yeah, it's me again. Sorry.

Okay, the suggestion's fairly simple: Let us lock on to and destroy combat scanner probes.
(Please note that I am basing this on one time when I spotted a CSP off a station, and I don't recall the Lock button being available)

This should:
- Reduce the amount of on-grid probing that goes on, making sniper ships such as the Rokh more useful
- Make good (fast) probers valuable pilots (mini-profession: Prober for hire :D)
- Give fast-lock rapid-fire ships (railgun Cormorant, anyone) things to do beside gatecamping
- MORE SPLOSIONS

Hopefully those are good enough reasons.

As it is there isn't even a right click context menu for probes. If you right click on a probe in the overview, nothing happens.

I'd agree to this if the probe had a really small signature radius. 5 m at most.

Oh, good. I was hoping it wasn't just that I was out of lock range. Smile

That sounds about right. 1m3 physical size + some extra signature size from their emissions.

The problem is that any decent prober will be able to move his probes off grid before you'll be able to get a good lock on them.

The prober himself has to be on grid to know that his probes are in any danger.

This is pretty much assumed. Unless the prober is on-grid or was on grid, it's pretty much impossible for probes to land on-grid. Even a barely-noticeable difference in their position on the map window translates to of thousands of km difference in-system and will take the probes off-grid.

Sometimes a gang will have a recon with combats with them, the recon won't leave the grid to launch probes, as he needs to be there to fleet warp everyone straight to the enemy. This means if you had someone close/brave enough you could snipe them as he popped them. Realistically this would just mean that you'd rather annoyingly have to pop probes, flash scan as you warp to fleet, then fleet warp.

On the other hand, it would mean I could punish those really annoying people who just pop their core scanner probes right on the gate by blowing them all up.

But what if you could probe down his probes, and shoot them!

And he in turn could probe down your probes, and shoot them!

PROBER BATTLE!

I honestly think PoCo based sov is a good idea https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1417544

Agreed, you should be able to point and destroy a probe, but signature should be more than 5m if you ask me... we can settle at 10-15m signature otherwise they take forever to lock...

Being things that "scan" they proberly send out all kinds of signals which should make their signature bloom compared to their actual size

Forever to lock based on what ship-class' capabilities? I'd like to create a reason for fleets to be varied, rather than adding another thing an all-BC fleet can do.

Incidentally, a CSP is physically only 1m3. A 5m radius is a significant increase on its actual size.

I too have been in a situation when I would have enjoyed shooting a probe - it would be nice, although like mxzf said, hard to ever actually hit one as they move so far.

I'd say this idea wouldn't be half bad....with the caveat a dead probe is a location that is now warpable. Call it a final electronic scream saying "guy is over here!!!!".

technical basis being the probe is given its x,y,z coordinate by the prober. He sent it to that point in space specifically so the coordinates are known. You pop his probe, he has the handy dandy ship computer to say probe 4 died at a very specific spot in space.
