Hi all,

With todays update to Singularity, you will notice the new Eve Launcher. We have previously blogged about it some months ago and you can read that here: http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=3070

And the newer one here: http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=9082

Evelopedia article here: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/EVE_Launcher

Over the last months, we have been working on completing the first releaseable version of the Launcher and making changes to the Launcher based on your very feedback on the dev blog. We are planning on releasing another dev blog in the coming days which will go into a bit more detail than the previous one.

In this thread we want your feedback on the Launcher based on your interactions with it on Singularity.

Please be detailed and constructive with your feedback, because it helps when collecting it and prioritizing what we should do next.

Do you like it and why do you like it?
Do you dislike it and why do you dislike it?
Come up with suggestions for how we can change it for the better.
What would be a cool feature for future releases of the Launcher?
Is something not working? Tell us what the error says and when/how you get it to appear.

FAQ:

Q: Will I have to use the Launcher or can I opt out?
A: Yes you will have to use it. The previous patching mechanic is going away and this will be the only supported way of updating your client in the future.

Q: What about Manual patches?
A: Manual patches will also go away, but for those of you who have multiple computers and only wish to download the data once from the internet, there is an option to Import/Export the downloaded data from machine to another. The feature is still being worked on, but you see it available soon. For now you can try it out by copying and pasting the .patch file with the correct build numbers from the EVE folder from one to another. So yes, the feature is there, but the nice user interface isn't... yet.

Q: Is this the final look of the Launcher?
A: No, as you can see from the top left it is BETA. In a way nothing is final as we do very much take into account what feedback you have for us. But when it comes to the design and look, we have a team working on the design for the TQ release and hopefully that design will be on Singularity when it is ready.

Q: What is the purpose of the Launcher?
A: The purpose of it is to be able to provide a richer experience for the user while patching and installing. The installing and patching process is quite boring as it is. To make that better we could for example show you the patch notes, so that you are informed of what has changed, link you to some dev blogs so that you'll know what is coming and perhaps link to the latest In Development vidoes from the CCP youtube channel to keep you entertained. But it isn't just about linking you to stuff and making you read things. The Launcher also gives us the platform to do some cool technology changes too, like adding in the ability to decide how fast you should be downloading the latest patch, how many threads it should be downloading on, clear the cache before starting the client with a simple button click and easily find and repair the client, just to name a few that are already there. Going forward we will have a Staged install, which allows you to get quicker into the game by letting you create your character while the rest of the game is still installing. This is great for new people who doesn't want to sit around and wait for 4,5 hours while their game downloads. Even further into the future from that, there are more even better things but I can't promise anything here, so I rather not mention them.

Q: Does the Launcher use peer-to-peer technology? And if so, will it use my bandwidth without telling me?
A: P2P is one of the features that might come in the future (hopefully the not too distant future), but still we're quite far away from it right now. When implementing it, we will make sure that the user has full visibility and control over what is done, and that nobody sneaking away with your bandwidth without you knowing.

Damn I read "Launchers" Sad

Anyways, what I'd like to see added in the launcher is the 'news' section available on the character selection screen.
So players can have something more interesting to read when waiting because of patch ;)

It would be cool if a single launcher could manage both Sisi and Tranq installs by selection.

FYI: I added /server:Singularity to the launcher shortcut - the launcher said Tranq, but logged me into Sisi.

What is about Multiclient User?
1 Launcher per Client or 1 Launcher for all clients?

Will it be possible to download the Patch from eo.com without that Launcher?
(My I-Net connection at home is not that good to support 200 MB DL, but i could dl it at a friend and get it on a USB Stick...

The new launcher needs a make short cut button on it.

Its still checking if its current before it loads the launcher

Its currently not closing when the game client opens.

Laucher reset all my preferances becouse I had to create a new short cut from my sisi folder.

If i dont know something about EVE. I check https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/ISK_The_Guide

First things I have noticed:
*.patch file located in EVE root directory, not in launcher/cache/Download. I dont like mess in root folder Straight

Language selection on main page is cool option but when you re-open launcher again, your previous language selection is not saved and English loading by default.

It seems there is no way you can revert option "Only display launcher window when there is an update" without editing/deleting settings file. Not much can be done there but I predict some noob frustrations in future.

Launcher updater still using %TEMP% directory. Say hello to raging noobs who cannot configure UAC on their x64 system.

Also TQ server status graph will look cool on launcher IMHO, not only user count.

Yep, aware and working on it.

We're aware of this too, and I just need to dump the desired language to disk and read it at boot.

Heh, yea, you can unset it in the yaml file, but that's not a nice thing to do. If you've got ideas for a nice way to allow the user to open it up, I'm all ears.

The embedded webpage is authored by our Web department, and we're awaiting a final site. What you see there is simply the original prototype we've been working with, which is why the language selection is rudely attached to the progress bar. That should change in the near future though.

The only solution that comes to mind - shortcuts (in EVE folder and Start menu) similar to old safe mode shortcut.
Something like "eve.exe /forcelauncher"

My preliminary testing in Wine (1.4rc4, Xubuntu 11.10 64-bit) seems to work well with the Launcher version 0.47 (no crashes and self-update to 0.49 worked, and it launches EVE and connects to Sisi despite displaying TQ on the launcher screen).

Too bad that the current game build is beyond useless at this point (no stargates in space!)

0.49 allows you to save the selected language for future boots. Be aware that it sets the client language (or should do) although you can set the client to something different if you want to.

If you use sisilauncher the gate issue is fixed but if you created a new launcher short cut, while it was broken, gates do not show up.

The new launcher (or whatever this one does with the patch) can't update the SiSi version of EVE on my pc. It passes step one and reaches 5% of step 2, it says client update is unsuccessful.

I cleared the cache and nothing changed.
Any help is appreciated.

Have same problem. Repair Tool does not help. Using the same launcher that I have always used (don't know anything about this "new" launcher.)

When it comes to the staged install part, try starting off with the nebulas. Those would be the perfect target for testing this.

There should be a log file located in the launcher\cache folder, called launcher.log. Could you dump it on http://pastebin.com/ or something similar, so I can take a look? Thanks!

Same problem here.

Installed a clean download of Singularity into an empty folder. Ran Repair with the Sisi switches. Insists I do a Patch. Then there is no launcher.exe.log file in Launcher Directory as mentioned in the Error 13 message.

Been off Sisi for 4 days from this................

Tried all weekend and have yet to see new launcher.

Try opening launcher.exe as administrator; it worked for me

Been there done that. Again, it cannot find "launcher.exe.log" nor is it in the Launcher folder.

Someone in another thread (there are 5 now about this) said that 'launcher.exe.log" disappears while running Repair, even with the Sisi switches. cannot verify this...and after downloading Client and with no Launcher available, Repair is the only option to Patch.

It (and myself) are going in circles.
