Implications of forum "likes" and perceptions of those with lots of them

The problem with dislikes is that they will only ever attract the “zero-star monkeys”, and in an already politicised and troll-heavy environment such as EVE, it would just be awful in every way imaginable.

Some kind of post/like ratio to keep us postingwhores in check might be a bit more useful though. P

Wouldn't it be fun to have entire new group who would try gain most negative total likes? I'm sure that it would carry the content quality to entire new level.

That is probably implementable by Chribba on eve-search.

Nothing.

They are completely unimportant to the way I post. I have given out three.

They have increased the amount of shitposting though, by those to whom it is somehow important to get them.

Yes. Levels Dante couldn't even conceive of… Ugh

It's essentially already there on the stats page: the total posts and total likes are right next to each other (0.25! yay! Lol)

A post/like ratio would be terrible, as it would disencourage people from posting or expressing opinions or facts that might be unpopular with the majority.

Where do you find your total post count ? probably being dense but can't seem to find mine in my profile.

Wahoo! My standard spelling error! I don't get what it is about my writing muscle memory that makes me constantly misspell that word that way… anyway.

Weeell… would that really happen without a dislike count? I just think that if people are that concerned about their stats compared to the point they're supposed to make (but aren't, out of fear of stats loss), then the point in question was probably not worth making to begin with, so that kind of discouragement sounds rather encouraging. No! Alternating silly writing with harebrained writing is the only way to stay sane.

Not everyone might like to be liked by someone who thinks they like them but only like them for the sake of liking what they liked in the first post?

Likes are like SP: the total is completely meaningless, but people try to assign meaning to it anyway (either by thinking of it as epeen or as some measure of “unfairness”). What matters is where they're placed and why.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Hmm... like-post ratio (LPR) is unfair. Those who were derping around the forums since the beginning of time (see: Liang) have a definite disadvantage, as none of their old posts can be "liked" and eve-search is too good about seamless integration.

Likes and Dislikes are essentially a form of anonymous peer pressure, with no one to argue with or show themselves people who frankly aren't very socially adept are going to ferret around for posts that get them more likes than others and so on.

I think my general opinion on the likes/dislikes is it really does kill the conversation.

That counting method just favors younger posters. Tippia has been an "enthusiastic poster" for years before the like-system was even in place, while you younglings barely talk at all and are only a year or two old. For example at your current posting speed you'd have to post for more than 40 years to even catch up to Tippia's current post count. If you want the system to actually mean something, it should only count posts made after the like system was implemented.
