Implications of forum "likes" and perceptions of those with lots of them

One of the things that has baffled me to no end about these new forums is the "like" system. I'm not sure what purpose it serves. I have been more of a forum warrior/troll lately than I have in the past, and that has apparently garnered me a bunch of these "likes". They were at times used as tacit "I agree with you", or as "your post is funny", or simply "I am an ******* who uses a script to like a whole page of posters". Upon reaching "big round numbers" of "likes" (10, 50, 100, and now almost 500) I get weird vague feelings of accomplishment or affirmation... but I also feel bad for having them. In short, I am confused.

The confusion is only compounded by the fact that the thread listing shows a thread's "likes" as a total of all "likes" on all posts, even if they are all "liking" the second comment about how terrible the OP and the whole thread is.

What does "liking" a post mean to you? When do you "like" as opposed to posting a "+1" post, or similar? What, if anything, do you think upon seeing a person with a lot of "likes"? Do you even care?

Edit: added more airquotes around the word "like" everywhere.

I like this system for the prevention of arsehat posts. Also, it can be funny to read how someone hands somebody else's arse to them in a much liked comment no. 2

I was asking you!

I am seriously not trolling, but trying to ask people what it means to them. From the start I have viewed it as a pointless endeavor to "Web2.0" the forums, but what with the CSM election requiring "likes" for their candidacy post, I am thinking that either I have it wrong (or am in the minority), or CCP has a disconnect going on between them and their players on what "likes" are.

I dont like any of them and I think they're more dillusional about illusions of grandure than I am. Either way isnt the candidacy process over?

About 300-500 likes is in my opinion the best score someone could have and makes me think of an actual good poster.
People with more likes are usually either trolls or attention whores or both.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Intersting idea but surely the fact everyone has been posting on the forums for diffrent lengths of time rather distorts that metric.

Also further to the topic, it's also a silent form of communiication on the forums and a way to build relationships.

2 examples come to mind

Say you are in a hotly debated thread, there may be a couple of people following the thread and while not commenting publicly are supporting your posting by liking what you say.

I spend a bit of time in Science and Industry now there a couple of posters down there, that despite never having spoke to directly there use of the 'likes' feature leads me to believe there is a mutual respect there without anything actually having to be said.

I'm sure there are downsides to the system but I think it works quite well.

This is pretty much the reason why I disabled the entire "total likes" counter from classic forum style by default.
Likes to single post can be used to indicate many things, but total count has no real use.

That's a pretty cool idea. However, total "likes" can also indicate forum alts, or new characters -- and I have found myself responding differently to those posters as opposed to "forum vets" with a few hundred likes.
