Race and shields or armor question

Hello to everyone here. I made a toon earlier just to check things out, but now I find myself able to go omega and buy the new player pack. My question to you guys is does race really matter? I know some ships have shields and some armor. If say I go shields and a fleet runs armor am I gimped till I cross train up?

All races are roughly capable of filling all roles (ewar, shooting stuff, jumping ships, transport, tackle, etc.). Some ships are better than others, but the overall racial picture is more even.
Usually, young players are encouraged to choose a race they like for non-optimization reasons (they like the race story, the ship's look or they feel lasers belong to space tech). In the long term, a lot of players find themselves crossing the racial barrier and learning to fly ships of several, often all, races.

You're only gimped until the fleet disbands, a few hours later.
If, however, you join a community (corp, alliance, incursion channel, etc.) that relies on armor, then you'll either be a liability to the fleet, or a liability to yourself as you lose ships often. More often than not, the fleet commander will stop inviting you though.

This only applies for organized fleets. There are lots of fleets (smaller looser ones usually) where you're told to "bring what you can", in which case it won't matter to the fleet if you're shield or armor.

My general advice, in this case, is to choose a race of ships you like, and train to fly it well.

Big picture race does not matter cross training is an option. As to shields and armor it matters for logistics, in fleets but ultimately it is best to focus on one till you are well skilled prior to training for the other.

Race only matters at all when you are alpha. In Omega status race does not matter at all since you can train to fly any ship.

Even in alpha state you are gimped in enough other stuff that I doubt being stuck in one race's ships is your biggest limiting factor.

The races ship line ups are roughly equivalent in ability to accomplish tasks and fill roles. As you have pointed out being stuck in one race will limit your options when you are in alpha mode but even then there are alternative fits for ships and you can often use a shield tank on an armor ship or vice versa if need be to fill a fleet doctrine.

Race is only an issue for Alpha toons.

As for shields and armour, ALL ships have BOTH shields and armour. What makes some ships better for shields and other ships better for armour is mostly the module slot layout on each ship.

Modules to improve your shields are mostly mid slot items, so a ship with a lot of mid slots has more options for shield modules. There are a small number of shield modules that go in low slots, but mid slots are where most of the shield modules need to go.

Modules to improve your armour are low slot items, so a ship with a lot of low slots has more options for armour modules. I can't think of any armour modules for mid slots off the top of my head.

The next point of difference is that some ships have built in bonuses for certain types of shield or armour modules. If a ship has a bonus for armour repairers or armour resistance, it's a safe bet that the ship is intended for armour modules. It's the same with ships that have built in shield repairer or shield resistance bonuses.

Finally, some ships will have an equal number of mid and low slots and no bonuses for shield or armour modules. You can go either way with ships like that.
