Pay to Win - My story

So I have played Eve in the past for a couple years and decided to try this game out again. In my short time I have done a bit of faction warfare, wormhole living, lowsec combat sites, and more. I just have to say that everywhere I go, absolutely sucks as being an alpha account. This game handcuffs the alphas beyond belief. This is the most pay to win game I have ever played. I cannt do anything efficiently...This game is basically telling me "F You, go solo lvl 3's in your cruiser".

I am very close to quitting this game.

Eve is "free to play" in the same way that WoW is "free to play" its really just an extended unlimited time trial.

only difference is that in WoW you are limited to lvl 20, which means you can't ever actually experience any of the high end content.

in eve you CAN engage in just about every aspect of the game on at least some level.
sure you can't use T2 guns, but meta 4's are pretty damn close.
no you can't use a cloak for WH exploration. which means living in wormholes is going to be difficult, but it can be done, and the cheaper ships means that anything you loose should be replaced in a matter of seconds.

yes, there are some very real advantages for going omega, but if there where not, why would anyone pay? the servers gotta stay online somehow.

if you find alpha too limiting, then go omega.

This is a subscription based game. Alpha is your free trial. Besides, there's plenty you can do as an alpha. Hop in an EWAR frigate, join a fleet, and go ruin someone's day by jamming them out or damping them so they can't target past their nose. I mean, what do you want, EvE to be completely free?

I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

That's not "Pay to Win" that's called a trial account. If you want the full experience pay for it like the rest of us.

Apparently the OP (and the others who posted above me) forgot that Omega time can be bought with ISK. As one's economy progresses, that limitation slowly turns from a neverending grind into a minor inconvenience. So there is zero reason to call EvE pay-to-win.

Besides "winning" depends highly on what goals you set for yourself.

And if you set your goal along the lines of shooting others... I have the impression that most alphas greatly overvalue the impact of all the stuff they can't have as opposed to knowledge and experience they are lazy to acquire. Though I guess it's the same with some Omega fellows who won't try things until they have perfect skills and blingy fits for it to lose.

I too walk into stores, get free samples, use them and love them and then feel entitled to a whole bottle but refuse to pay and subsequently brand the product and the retailer as flawed for not submitting to my demands.

Alpha was meant as "unlimited free trial." CCP can't make this game F2P without taking out or heavily modifying a lot of mechanics, because they're set-and-forget (PI, research, industry) or low-interactivity (mining), and practically beg to be run in parallel.

One player/one account/one subscription is about the fairest way to pay for a game (one player=one vote, whales don't get more), but that's extremely rare these days. You can see it in the way a lot of game companies develop content: more and more stupid overpriced shiny things, less and less game.

Edit: Oh, and more and more mechanics designed to be un-fun so you'll fork over money to not play them.

I apologize that you're not getting your $0/month from the game. CCP will lose a great deal of income from you quitting.

So you played Eve for a couple of years in the past. You probably remember what you got out of the game without paying back then? 2 or 3 weeks with similarly harsh restrictions as Alpha accounts have today. Did you think it was "pay to win" back then? Probably not - it was a "pay to play" subscription based game after all.

Not much has changed since then. Eve is still a subscription based game. You can play without paying, and depending on your mindset, you may actually enjoy it. But to get the full experience, you still need to pay your subscription fee one way or another. When you call Eve the worst pay to win game ever, then you probably haven't played many other so called "free 2 play" MMOGs. Among all the other MMOGs out there, Eve is a game with comparatively few P2W options. Everyone pays about the same for their account, and everyone gets the same benefits out of it. Yes you can pay for a second account, or a third, fourth ...., but with the off grid boosters gone and key broadcasting prohibited, what you get out of that first and foremost is convenience.

And even if you do not pay for a single account, due to the nature of the game you can still experience most of what the game has to offer. There are no artificial rules to Eve that limit fleet sizes or engagement conditions. If at first you don't succeed, call your friends and try try try again. Alphas can win fights, command fleets, gank freighters, run incursions - especially on the competetive side of things, there are few hard blockers. You will need to alter your approach as an alpha, but this is not your run off the mill MMOG where you need to bring a full raid of max-level gearscore 9000 characters to even stand a chance at getting **** done.

Admittedly, I don't like CCPs marketing here either. While Eve is technically "free 2 play" now, marketing it as such creates unreasonable expectations. If you are going into this, expecting to get all of the game for free, then you will get disappointed. This is to a degree true with all so called F2P titles - in the end, the company behind the game does it for the money, or at least they will only be able to develop the game, if they make money off it. That is just how the world works. A truly free to play MMOG is an illusion.
