22 February 2017 – Reykjavik, Iceland - CCP Games today announced that the search for planets outside our solar system (AKA exoplanets) will come to their massively multiplayer online game EVE Online. This unique scientific crowdsourcing effort represents a collaboration between CCP developers, Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS), University of Reykjavik, and the University of Geneva and its honorary professor Michel Mayor, winner of the prestigious 2017 Wolf Prize for Physics and discoverer of the first exoplanet.

Within EVE’s virtual universe, players will interact with real-world astronomical data provided by the University of Geneva through a fully integrated part of the EVE Online game experience called Project Discovery. Once enough players reach comparative consensus on classification of the data, it will be sent back to the University of Geneva for use in refining the search for exoplanets.

“We were thrilled to see the successes of our first foray into citizen science, in which EVE players have been voracious contributors to the database of the Human Protein Atlas,” said Andie Nordgren, EVE’s Executive Producer. “In searching for the next dataset for our massive player community to tackle, the stars aligned for players to have the opportunity to directly contribute to the search for new planets with a world-renowned scientific team. Real people around the world collaborating in a virtual universe to explore the real universe is the stuff science fiction, and soon science fact, is made of.”

The previous iteration of Project Discovery yielded incredible results in a short amount of time, with players submitting over 25 million classifications of human cells back to the Human Protein Atlas. It proved EVE’s legendary community’s massive support for real science efforts as players formed one of the largest collectives of citizen science contributors in the world.

The search for exoplanets will come to EVE in 2017, with a full presentation by Michel Mayor scheduled for April 6-8 at EVE Fanfest 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

It would make sense but I have not been informed of any. Maybe someone can ask at Fanfest after the presentation.

So instead of paying to someone to do it, they implement it in video games and players do it FOR FREE what should be a paid salaried person doing.

Great job.. correct me if Im wrong.

Instead of paying one team x amount to do the work over x years they ask a large group of people if they will volunteer some time to look at it

This new Exoplanet search could end up being my favorite reason to log into EVE every day. Thank you!

The good news is that the nobel prize won't go to those who do the work! The system works!

It fits EVE theme more than anything.

At last we will have aportunity to discover some new planets. \o/

Under the patronage of CONCORD?

This is awesome!! And crowdsourcing information of this magnitude is something I have wished for for years ever since I used to run the SETI program on my computers when they werent in use years ago. And I am glad that CCP rewards us with some things worth isk to the masses for it and highly encourage CCP to talk to more companies, like SpaceX, and other spacial entrepreneurs to help crunch numbers and values for the future. It would be an excellent way to move humanity forward into the stars.

Gaming will be the new way of working if its done right.Blink

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

So, will we get some sets of photos and we would have to determine if something is going on on those?

Like a timeline of luminosity of a star or something?

I think the entire idea of comet mining would work well if integrated with some data mining of real world applications and might actually make mining, or at least a portion of it, very very interesting. Blink

I always love the candy news that CCP post and not the news under the hood. You say that project discovery was a huge success. What i would like to know is:

1 - how much money did CCP make from this.
2 - How many human hours were involved in the success
3 - How much real cash it costs for the above point in real life or would have taken.
4 - Most importantly were the players compensated back properly or is this the new world order of work more for less pay.

Amazing,

You’ve discovered a habitable exoplanet, but so has an an evil interplanetary mining corporation. Can you get to the planet before they strip it bare and leave it unsuitable for life?

And yes, this is a contest, and you have 2 weeks to submit to be in the running and they want some graphs to prove it, and you can win it.

Lorentz Transformation
In physics, the Lorentz transformation (or transformations) are coordinate transformations between two coordinate frames that move at constant velocity relative to each other.

Wait Equation
The Wait Calculation was introduced by Andrew Kennedy in his paper "Interstellar Travel: The Wait Calculation and the Incentive Trap of Progress",[1] published in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society (JBIS).
