The Beacon: A broadcast to old allies and foes

We Unbound lead a strange late-life cycle that is misunderstood and mis-represented. Our oft-whispered immortality is in fact a delicate chain of science, and sometimes rolls of the dice.
A million working parts must fire in perfect synchronicity and harmony to achieve a 'certified' clean 98% copy that then inherits all legal right to our assets. We've only been in wide service for a decade and a half, and already there are plenty of casualties to speak of among capsuleers. Degenerative cloning diseases and other factors sometimes render a once-feared force of nature into something unable to properly inhabit a body.

Sometimes it is not so simple. Some retire to enjoy the gains they have won. Some remove their pieces from the board to protect something. Some simply wish to retain some semblance of humanity.

Some were simply clonejacks and constructed aliases of others. There are plenty of ways to game the system, after all.

Regardless, the result to us is the same; silence. A dead end. A quiet link. De-Licensed. Gone.

The last month of increased capsuleer registration has produced a phenomenon, many sightings of long thought dead pilots, people missing for up to a decade. Rumors and sightings were fun to track. It got me thinking.
There must be plenty more.

I've started putting together a list of Lost Capsuleers, individuals who, if still out there in some form of sound body and mind, would be nice to see out there. Do you? If you show me yours, I'll show you mine.

Let this list on open Summit be a Beacon: it may be time for you ponder a return to the stars?

TL:DR which Lost Capsuleers would you like to see return?

I have a list of capsuleers who would certainly have many of the rest of us tear their hair out if they were to return, but I won't list it here because we shall speak no evil.

Jade Constantine.

There. I said it.

She was always fun to spar with, even if she was so thoroughly buried in her own ideology that she lost perspective.

Fair enough assesment.

A few to start from me:

Herko Khergans - The State needs more Storytellers.
Invelious - Where are you? We had dinner appointments?
Maggot - Are you still alive, old foe?
Archbishop - long silent after retiring to his fields.

Ava Starfire, for one. Adreena Madevaeda, for another. Many others whose presence I've missed have returned, or never left.

I suspect Ava won't be back, given what I know of her circumstances at the time, and I think she'll be enjoying life far more for it.

I would love to meet Jade Constantine.

Aside from that the whole Electus Matari alliance. Is it so wrong I want my heros to return?

  • Aria Sujui - But please, if you're at peace, by all means, remain where you are.
  • The Disciples of Ston - I'm probably one of the few here who misses their frequent tidings of good news about people rescued. Their silence is deathening.
  • Julius Rigel - I miss the Sub-warp Racing Venture.
  • Cynthia Gallente - But as with Aria, please, if you're at peace, by all means, remain where you are.

Treasure the memory of them. Don't wish for meeting them, lest you want that tarnished.

I guess your right, but what is the role of the successor but to continue the predecessors work as they see fit? Their work is far from over but their guidance would be great. Those who wish to continue that path should hopefully have someone to pass that torch. Atleast, thats my humble opinion.

Dr. Arkon Sarain.

I know I know I know he's really thoroughly dead and without backups and ... all that.

But I wish I could see him again.

AAAAAH!

No no no nonononono please no!

Che, they will strip my identity. The authorities will take everything I formally, legally am and give it back to her. If I'm in the State, I'll be a nonentity, and probably shot. If I'm in the Empire, I'll (very fortunately) probably still be able to be the Praefecta's retainer, but that will probably be all that stands between me and getting seized and enslaved as an illegal person. And then the Cartel will probably kill her in some awful, memorable "don't double-cross us or this is what will happen to you" kind of way.

I hope she's at peace, too, but even if she's not, her resurfacing is probably not a good thing for either her or me.

Cardinal,

I am afraid that I write for a reason other than that I am terribly concerned with the point of your post. The aim might be meaningful to many others but, due to timing and other chance circumstances, I was acclimated better, I think, to functional immortality than some. Especially more so than the First.

And, yet, the body of what you wrote struck me. Deeply. It was ghostly, stirring images and thoughts most unsettling.

I do not like it.

I guess the ex-capsuleer who pays for my license is somebody like that. She extracted all her piloting skills. After that she told me she doesn't dream about being a Maelstrom anymore. I'm still not clear on whether those were bad dreams or good dreams.

You know, I don't miss the people so much. Some names come to mind of course, like Misan Pal'taek or others that are still around but in different places like Altaen and so on. But I don't really miss them. They found their paths and we moved apart. That is simply life no matter if you're a capsuleer or baseliner. There is no forever more, only the right now and what was. People drift apart and other people drift together.

I miss the way those days felt, even if they never actually felt that way back then. I miss the way I remember those days, even though that memory only drags up some parts of it, and not all the parts that weren't worth it.

Simply put, this is just nostalgia. New Eden wasn't much better then, we were just less aware of it all. We hadn't been to so many places or seen so much effort turn into naught. We miss these people not because we miss them, but because we miss when we were more ignorant and less jaded. When we looked forwards to this day and imagined what we would have achieved by then. By now.

Our failures to live up to our image of ourselves manifesting as nostalgia and wistful sighs about the people we surrounded ourselves with back then is pretty much proof of just how short we've come on our path away from baseline humanity.

You know who I miss? The us we thought we'd be. I wonder where they went off to?

The few I miss are better where they are. A little peace is the least they are owed.

Like many, I miss Ava; although I reckon I have more cause than most.

She's mad but she's magic, there's no lie in her fire.

Maybe. If you ever suspect that has changed, you get us a cardboard box, a stick, and a piece of string, and I'll see if I can rustle up a box of Zippies™?

Technically she hasn't been out of the capsule for very long. I've reasons to believe she's seen your message, for however much that is worth.

I have trouble thinking things through these days, Aria. You are probably right that her return would be problematic for both of you. I wish there was a safe way that I could see her again, though.
Dr. Sarain... I would have mentioned him as well, but I have no hope.

Sherezad...I'd like to see her return as well.

Ava Starfire...while I don't miss my arguments with her, or getting punched by her, she does make the cluster a more interesting place and I do miss her a little.

I'll do that. Or signaljack the toy Wolf I made for her, and tie a box to it instead. Either way, you're on.
