Pilot names with real life country nicknames...?

I have always been curious about something - why do players create pilot names and add a nickname to their real life country? That is, I have seen (pilot name) GER or (pilot name) GR (or RU or SLO), etc. Please do not get me wrong - people can name themselves whatever they want. But I'm peaked as to why playing a game to subtly get away from real life for a while, a person would name themselves from their home country? I understand home pride and all, but just found it interesting.

Thanks in advance.

A lot of in-game communities are based around ethnicity, oddly enough. With a very social game like Eve, the language barrier cannot really be broken by just knowing a little broken English: English-newbies miss out on idioms, social customs, etc.

Some of these "ethnic enclaves" include things like RED Alliance (Russian), Red Overlord (Russian), HUN Reloaded (Hungarian), Romanian Legion (Romanian), and many others.

The country abbreviations in the names are probably meant to facilitate finding others you can relate to, which is easier (and less awkward) than asking "Вы Россией?" in local.

A lot of people put various flags, slogans etc about their home country in their bios too. Helps to find people that are from your country, especially when you're not a native english speaker and want to hang out with other people that speak your native language.

... generally the one I see is "говорите России?" (to anyone who knows Russian, my apologies for fail grammar). At least most of the non-english speakers understand when I use english characters to try responding to them...

For the most part though, I generally see the people put their nationality in the bio, rather than the character name.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

effectively -- (implied Are) "formal" you Russian?

(like Spanish, Italian, etc, there's a "formal" and "informal" variation of 'you').

ed -- I know "just enough" of a few languages to really **** things up.
