I guess my question regarding content delivery would be how are you registering the textures? Back in the day when I worked in the 3D games industry (@Aivlis Eldelbar) we would run scripts against the model files and generate multiple models and batch output them with different textures on..... material1_low, material1_high and then we we could select the quality by the model we loaded, the disk space of the geometry typically being a tiny fraction of the materials and bump maps.

I've never thought to put a proxy inline to see how/when the client is grabbing its assets, but it would seem to me that download-on-demand of textures would work well in this context, with the main difference being in the model loader class.

Are the materials and models listed in some kind of manifest file and then the client goes and dumps everything on it into a queue and grabs it all as quickly as possible? Or is it download-on-demand for individual assets?

From what I have seen so far, the client downloads the lower quality textures first (unless you tell it to download everything), so you can start playing, and then downloads the high(er) res stuff later. It took me a while to figure out why I couldn't get half-way decent textures with triexporter after they did that cache patch thingamajig. I had textures for most subcaps, but all supers and titans were missing, so I assume they get downloaded as you encounter the ships that use them.

As a Titan X haver whose card doesnt even break a sweat at 144 fps at 1440p I would be down for a high res texture pack.

I've heard it suggested that we should build aircraft "out of the same stuff the black boxes are made of" so many times I don't even cringe anymore Roll

In all seriousness, EVE is decently pretty already, while being able to run on almost anything. Higher res textures would be nice, but they are way down on the list I'd consider a good addition to a release. Even going by just art and graphics changes, there's plenty more stuff to do: fix the blinding dust clouds in anomalies, redesign old and ugly ships, making T3s skin-compatible... And that's only a list of old stuff getting improved; I bet most of the art team is way over their eyeballs in Citadel-related projects

I want high resolution!

And more new/updated ship models!

CCP Darwin, I respectfully pose my question again as it seems to never get a response.

CCP Darwin, is tessellation still on any Eve Online roadmap ?

.. because those effects WERE dramatic visually.

Definitely yes, but I'd like an option to only load the ship you're flying with the new textures cause lets be honest what are we all really looking at?

I think the biggest issue is having to create two release versions of every texture after something like this would be released along with making it harder to test if certain effects would work correctly and look right with both textures. If you scale back the default everything drops in quality but if one part is way higher res and they add visible ship damage or something like that... You get my point. Sounds like they would have to make the high res the default and design off that and just let most people select a lower res version. (Basically having an ultra quailty in the options after the change)

Unless im completely off but thats just what im gathering by what they say.

I want it also thougj.

Great fun could be had ...
... if CCP released them silently ...
... and no one ******* notices, just as they said.

And then, after half a year, they tell us.
