Hey, I for one really appreciate all the work you have done. High res textures would be great, but the game really does look better than it ever has. In particular I want to say thanks for the new shield effects. They look so awesome that I have betrayed my Gallente heritage and started flying Rattlesnakes for the first time. If I the choice was between better textures and all of the improvements you listed then you made a great call and keep on trucking.

The fact that the shield effects are now super easy to see when drunk off your ass also helps me not lose as many ships to rats. This is the kind of concrete improvement to the game experience that I can really get behind...

An optional download to get some sweet textures would be great. I play on max graphics at a modest 1080 and some stuff clearly could use upgrading.

I want highrez texture cookies! +1

Oh and we used a little officer mods. KIDDING! We used a lot of officers mods, A LOT! Because we don’t :censored: around in low-sec.

Yes,

This should not be a thing to talk about, it should be already done. For what my support is worth, I support a high res texture pack. Send me an e-mail when you activate it and I'll be sure to come look around.

Delivering higher-resolution textures isn't off the table, it's just something we prioritized below other projects we could take on that we felt would bring more visual value (including a more procedural approach.)

I am very intrigued by any mention of procedural graphics generation, could you elaborate on possible applications. Are we talking about creating textures or more than just this, cos I can think of a great deal of PvE content that might benefit from a wave of some kind of procedural magic wand?

Anyway CCP Darwin it's good of you to keep in touch with the players the way you do, cheers!

You do realize we are talking about procedural graphics and not procedural content in PVE? Just asking that we are on the same page - dont take it as any form off offense, I just had experience with people mixing stuff like that.

If we are on the same page - can You elaborate? apart from obviously having preatier looking stuff when zooming in what would you see as improvement in this area?

Ok, not exactly pertinent maybe but that this is exactly what I asked! My question was how unfortunate that we just /only talking about procedural texture generation. I understand that Darwin is a designer of the graphics tools are used by the artists and so I felt that he might be forthcoming. A little off topic perhaps.

If you went overboard back when you said you had the high res textures, just say so. I think you can admit you don't have them instead of beating around the bush all the time.

Don't get me wrong, all those shader- and effects-updates are nice and all, but the textures do still look bad - especially the normal maps. If you have them, please put them in the client, if you don't have them, just say so.

We have them for many ships (particularly recently-redesigned ships), but there are a number of technical steps necessary to deliver them for the client, only some of which have been completed.

That said, many of the blockiness artifacts you're seeing are more about the compression format than the resolution. Why this hasn't been updated yet are a number of interconnected platform dependencies that will take some time to resolve.

Also, just to be clear, we would still like to do this, it's just been (as I've stated) pushed aside by other work, and the benefit isn't currently enough to bump it above those other things in priority.

So when might this happen? Not 2015 (obviously.) Not in the next few months. But, since we keep working on it between other things, it's not a dead idea, either.

Alright then. I've been waiting for 3 years, I think I can wait another 3. Smile

Thanks, by the way, for being so communicative, that's a rare quality these days.

I'm probably oversimplifying this but wouldn't a large issue currently with high detail models and textures is "some users don't have good enough PC's so we don't want to force them to it" that I get and its been discussed with it being optional. Far as I know the plan that you have put forward is that we can choose to download all assets I.E. High detail model & HD/4K textures.

If you're worried about clients using tons of resources just use the (Can't remember proper name but you know it) technique where the game draws a higher detail model the closer the camera gets. Up close could make the "grid" for high detail ships more and more smaller so if you're say up close in a fleet you won't be suddenly drawing 200 ships with 4K textures.

Or could you please atleast make some kind of a comment about this at fanfest. Its extremely tiresome to keep hearing about them, the promises etc but not see/hear any actual progression. For example show a roadmap.

Edit: Speaking of the time for introduction. A dev in fall of 2014 told me that an introduction for these would be in the fall of 2015/spring of 2016 but currently guessing its not nearly anywhere close due to citadels taking priority big time. Perhaps fall of 2016/Spring of 2017?

Trust me, if we didn't already do this, those 4000 ship fleet fights would never, ever happen.

Our current concerns about this are less about client performance and more about issues related to details of how we deliver the content. We're not set up now to deliver different content for differently capable clients, for example, and we don't want to double the installation size for someone who gets no benefit.

Make it opt-in from the launcher, or read the graphic card of the computer and offer the install.

ITT: people with close to no knowledge of computer graphics tell industry professionals how to do their jobs. Maybe next they can walk up to a construction builder and suggest they use "that technique where they stack bricks on top of one another".
