Idea for Abandoned POS cleanup

This is just a thought that came to mind. Feedback on this idea is much appreciated.

Within Wormhole space and probably other places in EVE, a number of POS towers and modules are left abandoned and take up space, leaving a ghostly reminder of who attempted to live there before. Although they make a nice temporary home for the roaming Wormhole traveler, there really isn't much point for them to be there unless the owning corporation can find their way back into the Wormhole system and reactivate the tower. I am aware of the idea of Mothballing a tower but why Mothball if you have no intentions of coming back?

My proposed Idea is directed towards rewarding explorers who find these abandoned and offline towers by having an option to capture these control towers for profit. This could be done through a really difficult data mining mini-game or through the new Entosis Link.

Reflecting on the new SOV changes, perhaps offline towers can be given a vulnerability timer so players can capture the offline tower. Or.... using the Entosis link or Data mining module would grant temporary ownership of the tower?

As I said this is just an idea. I'm interested in seeing what criticisms this proposed idea will receive, but I think this might be an interesting idea.

Thank you for reading.

Could we just blow them up with guns?

There is already an established mechanic in game to remove POSes. You lock them and shoot them. If the shields are down, this is relatively easy.

Capturing them would take an enormous chunk out of the PI market, shoot them if you want to salvage the wrecks.

-1, absolutely. Sorry.

A lot of wormhole corps put them there on purpose so that other corps can't just move into their space without grinding a structure first.

Also many people leave refining POS' etc. offline, and put them online only when they need them to save on fuel costs because it's not efficient to leave them on all the time.

The same is true of drug poses. It's inefficient to leave them online all the time if you don't have gas to process.

That's only three examples, but there are other reasons offline POS' are useful. Your suggestion would cause effectively kill all uses for offline sticks.

If only there were some modules which we could activate to make these structures explode. Wouldn't that be nice?

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

I think that's the point. it's to help get rid of squatters

personally, the structure resistances on offline POSs should degraded over time after it goes offline, let's say 3 months for offline PoSs to reach 0 resistances. If the PoS is brought back online, it's resistances are also back up.

This forces corps to either do something with their PoSs (like online them) or abandon them.

didnt CCP say that soon™ pos's will not be tied to moons?

i imagine that once that change is made, the problem of offline pos's will only come up over valuable moons (and then why would the pos be offline anyways?)

Until the POS changes are complete I think the existing mechanisms for removing offline pos's are sufficient. Its an interesting concept if pos spam were to become more prevalent. Based off what I heard from fanfest, these pos's will change and eventually be able to be effected by an entosis link so if you just wait a bit, you'll get what you want. When CCP does make the change it will be like the SBUs, and offlined POS's will likely be removed from space on the patch day.
