I am happy to say they brought the servers up ten minutes after I got home from work today.

What was everyone complaining about anyway? I didn't notice an outage...

Man, I really thought it was adults who played this game --- well okay, adults and some older teens. But so many of the comments call that presumption into question.

I've read some comments that seem to come from computer technicians, but even those don't appear to have the slightest clue.

True, I am not a tech at CCP, but with 30 plus years as a communications tech (with experience in both the military and civilian sectors) - I'd like to offer some possible scenarios that are going on at CCP.

1. The problem is a software upgrade glitch. Solution - roll back the upgrade to a point prior to the crash. This is in agreement with what so many posters have put - but the folks at CCP must not have thought of that one. Correct? Wrong! That is an immediate solution and one that every tech knows and tries. So, I would gladly bet 1 year's worth of game play (12 plexes) that CCP has already done that.

2. The software upgrade caused some piece of equipment to fail. However, the CCP techs don't know that - and so are not looking at what equipment was directly impacted by the software. Correct? Very doubtful, but possible, that the software upgrade caused the failure due to the software code. The first equipment that the techs would look at would be that which is directly impacted by the software and an attempt to reload the old software would be made. Length of outage at that point is maybe 30 minutes to an hour.

3. The software upgrade indirectly caused the equipment failure by stressing a piece of equipment that was nearing the end of its current life-cycle but that had not yet appeared to be bad before the upgrade was attempted. This is very probable. Often, such a failure is caught and reported by the system that monitors the equipment. However, monitoring systems I have worked with in the past sometimes report the wrong piece of equipment. Once this happens, the techs have to start a process of troubleshooting that can sometimes take hours to complete with the correct piece of equipment finally being replaced.

4. The failure only seems to be connected to the software upgrade - and would have occurred regardless of the upgrade. The corrective procedure outlined in number 3 above would be the same for this step.

5. The failure is beyond the direct access of CCP techs - or stated differently, the failure is caused external to CCP (such as a failure at the phone company providing access services to CCP). This last scenario, while possible is not highly probable as this discussion board is being provided.

- --

From what I have experienced with the CCP product (Eve Online), CCP has a very strong record that is probably in excess of 99.9% reliability. That is a level of service provision that all telecom providers strive for. Ask yourself this question - when was the last time you experienced a major outage on this game.

Fly fun - - when it is back up

It took you so long to write that, that the server came up in the middle!

Yup, I'm sure CCP was trying most everything. I'm guessing a rollback was a bad idea because there were some real bad issues that just had to get patched.

Will CCP provide an indepth analysis of the problem that caused the outage
and will they learn by their mistakes? that is the question.
