I missed the last ~3 years, but before that I can only remember it happening a couple times where the server was down for virtually the entire day after a botched patch.

Its the fact that some of the code got corrupted if it was that simple they would roll back to a back up from before the patch

It's a domino effect, one tiny error in one line or on incompatible command and a problem that has been in the system for 5 years breaks the server because it finally found it's niche.
