For your amusement...

Worked for an MMO company for 8 years, here's a list of stuff that caused extended down time:

  • Server updates were applied by unzipping zip files, but Windows wasn't giving useful errors when we ran out of drive space, so random data was missing from .dat files.
  • License expiration! Wheeeeee
  • Un-optimpized build process meant that once a problem was identified and a fix implemented, we had to wait 3-4 hours for a new build. During this time, QA can't go home.
  • Cowboy devs checking in changes at the last minute so their changes went untested. (Wait a minute...who checked in this divide by zero last night?!?)
  • Inexperienced QA not knowing how to test on a "clean machine" (VMs for the win!)
  • State mismatch between Dev/QA environment and production environment
  • HARD CODED STRINGS. WHYYYYYYYYYYY
  • Unhandled exceptions! Want to see your app crash with no useful info in the logs? Ask me how! Its fun and easy!

So i've done all the cleaning of the house, the garden is pristine and i've cooked a three course meal....hmmmm looks like i can accomplish alot without eve lol but honestly,....no really.....never again, CCP please don't make me do anymore physical labour, what's next??? decorating the house ahahaha?! noooooo....

i'm starting to feel like a junky , needing my fix, *twitches* need my eve *cries into his second glass of wine*

i'm sending out to CCP all my good will, keeping my fingers crossed guys and gals hope your not having a too rubbish time with it (have a glass on me)
