I Think I'm Missing Something...

o/ All,

I have been trying to run High Sec Lvl 4 missions to generate an income and gosh it is horrible work for seemingly little reward.

Hopefully I'm missing something and you can educate me on this part of the game...

I am currently running Lvl 4's against Serpentis basing out of high sec using a standard Hurricane, I then mop up with a Noctis. I'm lucky if I'm breaking 10mil isk phr. (Doesn't help that the missions take a while sometimes)

Are there better ships/fits for the job? Am I running against the wrong NPC faction? I cannot yet fly a marauder. How do you make a living at this (and stay sane)?

PLEASE HALP!!!

Use a battleship or T3 cruiser.

Battlecruisers *can* do L4s, but they're not very optimal because of lowish DPS (when fit for enough tank to survive the missions).

Most common L4 mission boats are pirate/navy battleships (Rattlesnakes, Navy Raven, Machariels, Nightmares), marauders and T3s.

You may well be better off just blitzing L3s for loyalty points if you're stuck in a BC hull.

but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

Yeah pretty much this while you train into a BS, considering you mentioned hurricane, Machariel will probably be your quickest train to efficient level 4 mission running.

Are you taking the LPs into consideration with your stated 10mil isk/hr?

As far as loot collection and salvaging goes, it is highly questionable whether or not it is worth it to salvage and collect loot. The argument here is that you can get more missions done in a set amount of time and make more isk through bounties, mission rewards and LPs then you can taking the time to loot and salvage. There are some missions where the loot is well worth it and others where it is a complete waste of time, so taking note of these details will gain efficiency. Another method I started to employ when I have an itch to run missions is to carry enough MTUs for each room in the mission. Drop one in each room, BM it and come back after and hour and a half or so of mission running to scoop the loot and very efficiently salvage as everything is already in a neat little pile so there is no need for tractors on the Noctis.

The other posters covered it pretty well.

Level IV missions are best done in BS. Minmatar line has the Typhoon and the Maelstrom, both work good for missioning.
Not sure what your skills are, or if you may have jumped into IV's a bit early. If so, yes, you could actually clear and complete level III's faster and make more ISK.
IF, you jump into a BS early, be sure to INSURE THAT SHIP.

If possible, post your skills and people will be able to coach you a bit better.

imo if you can't afford and fly a machariel you are probably better off in lv3s. Probably best to run each one in a maelstrom first to get a feel for the mission and learn the triggers. plus you have a lot more tank, and plenty of space for a MJD to safety. but you more or less need a lot of damage to be able to make lv4s worth it. They might feel like they are worth it before then and if you want to do them you can, but you can make better isk blitzing lv3s than struggling in lv4s.

also skills for burner missions are important. all the team missions can easily be run in a t2 fit garmur, and a few of the assault frigs can be fit to deal with them. The pirate burner missions are a bit harder and seem to need more specific ships and/or skills, but a daredevil seems to be very versatile and able to deal with several of them. imo in the long run if you don't have the skills for burners you might as well not run missions.

Assuming you are weighted towards projectile weapons a Machareil as mentioned above and then a Vargur is a good path. Salvaging can be worth it if you enjoy it. Especially if you have a notics and/or manufacture your own rigs.

Another option would be to train your noctis alt into a dps ship that could assist your main in the mission.

Part of getting a better isk/hour from missions is learning which missions to decline.

Another good entry level L4 mission ship is a Dominix if you have sentry drone skiils.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I will give lvl 3s a go for a while and see how my isk/hr changes, certainly sounds less of a pain.

Get a macharial if you can afford it, lvl4's will become a breeze, ideally though you want a marauder. I fond the loot worth while getting. I drop a few mtus as I mission, bm them, then after an hr or so come back in a nocis with 8 salvages and scoop loot and salvage. I think people underestimate the value of the rigs you can churn out doing this and I just reprocess all the cheap stuff make ammo, use the lp to turn in to faction ammo and sell.. lots of better ways but this works just fine if you a slacker like me. Or just make the t1 ammo and use it.
If you don't want the salvage, get pro synergy to come salvage it and they will give you a share. In 1 hrs worth of lvl4's in a bs you will make more than 10mil in loot/salvage alone... you could always join a good corp to help you out Blink

I just decline them. Can't be bothered to lose a bunch of faction frigates figuring out what works.

Loot and salvage isn't worth the time for most missions, you'll earn more Isk, both directly and through LP running another mission instead. It can however provide you with a passive income via a 3rd party if you're running level 4's, Pro Synergy offer a salvaging service in most lvl 4 hubs and surrounding areas; they basically loot, salvage and sell the stuff for you, and give you 45% of the proceeds for providing the wrecks.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Since you're doing the salvage and loot manually with the Noctis, I've found it's best to bypass the small hull class wrecks and just collect up the medium and large hull class wrecks after each room is completed.

That way you won't have wrecks despawning if it takes you a while to complete the mission.

Also Minmatar ships work great against Angel Cartel NPC's.

if you are going to loot and salvage:

take at least the amount of mobile tractor units you will need for the mission (so 1 per room)

drop them at the start of each room and just leave them, when you come back with the salvager you can just salvage and scoop the mtu and not have to worry about tractoring wrecks to you.

The only real efficient battlecruiser for level 4s would be a myrmidon and sentries, however it's super sp intensive and you're better off with just training a space potato to level 4s and it will outperform even a max-skilled myrmidon.

That right there is your problem.

DON'T DO L4 in T1 BC

Normal people do l4 in t1 bs (raven, domi, mael), faction bs (navy raven), pirate bs (rattlesnake, mach, nightmare), marauders, pirate cruiser like gila.

Take a week to do a L4 in a Cane. Train into a Maelstrom, then a Mach. Enjoy.

The biggest money in a lot of L4 is the LP.

This means corp choice is important.

The worst for LP are the faction war corps such as Fed Navy as you are competing with FW LP. Often the best you can get with a FW fleet/navy corp is about 0.7/1.0 ISK/LP earned. The only advantage of these corps is they tend to own tradehubs like Dodixie or Jita and higher corp standings improves your tax rates when trading.

In the middle are Sisters of EVE who offer a reliable 2.0/1.0 more or less on probe launchers and SOE ships. It has dropped a little lately but is one of the more stable ISK/LP corps around as there is a constant demand for SOE stuff.

The best is a variety of corps offering unusual items like mining implants. ISK/LP ratios of 5.0/1.0 or better are possible but its a shallow market and selling a handful too many can see the price collapse so you need to be on your toes and move around between items and corps. Also because of the shallow market people that know of a high profit corp generally will not announce it in the forums.
