I present to you Red vs. Green. I just had to take a picture before turning the mixer on... and see them all grinded down to what would eventually become an insanely hot Harissa spice paste. I like light and fresh fingerfood with hot dips for exploration missions. Keeps you alert, you can drop it in an instant, and it doesn't require your attention too much! I think it was Xindi who did the hero hack thing with Sleepers hanging around recently. Maybe fingerfood was doable then Big smile But I absolutely suggest cloaking up for anything more dinner-like.

Terribly sorry, Xindi! I'm bad about bumping. :/

That said, I have done some cooking lately. Most recently, it was a gazpacho as we went through a heat wave; an approximately even amount of tomatoes (roma, as they were handy), sweet onions and bell peppers along with a bit of harissa for variety's sake, and the usual salt, pepper, a little bit of tomato juice, etc. Care of a small apartment, I don't have a proper food processor, so I ended up using a stick blender, hitting the thickest parts but otherwise being sure to avoid over-pureeing it. As you'd figure, once chilled, it was a lovely way to do dinner, and I made sure to have some salami alongside to ensure I got my protein.

On Saturday, the miss and I had to run off very quickly to the movies after a day of this-and-that, so I had to rush the caprese I'd been planning on making. Instead of neat little caprese, the solution was to dice the basil, quarter the relatively young tomatoes (just the beginning of tomato season here!), and cut into chunks the rather large mozzarella ball I'd found at the market. With salt, pepper, and a splash of balsamic, the caprese salad was an excellent way to get a light, summer-y fare alongside the pasta and stir-fried summer veggies.

Additionally, Mynxee invited me to do a lore/research/RP-oriented Q&A with some Signal Cartel types! https://www.reddit.com/r/evescout/comments/3d4m9r/qa_with_makoto_priano_on_the_confluence_of_ingame/

Just got back from a lenghty midnight BBQ. It's client patch time now, so why not bridge the download time with some food report?!

Grilled chicken, pickled in chilli pepper, turkish red pepper, sea salt and capsicum powder. Along with this, a mixed green salad with arugula, chunks of orange, and red currant; dressed with a mix of lemon oil and unfiltered olive oil from Sicily. Just a pinch of curcuma for finishing. Et voilà :)

Patch is done and applied!

Never not! Just been bad about updating the thread. ;) I see that you've mailed me! Mailing back now.

On which note, brief food chatter time: we've been experimenting with chili recently! Usually beef chuck, but also recently a lamb shoulder. In the former case, for variety's sake, we added some rabbit sausage on top of the usual beans, sweet and hot peppers, carrots, celery, onions, etc. In the latter case, instead of chili powder, we focused mostly on using curry-style spices of various types. Very tasty! It's also great for making a pile of left-overs that are easier to eat when we're dealing with summer heat.

Also, cornbread is brilliant.

My latest discovery is Sumac. It is a spice with a faint but clear lemon flavor. It can be used to prepare meat dishes of all kind, preferably before browning. Its very distinctive taste is unusual at first, but combined with green salad or other side dishes it works excellent.

Besides... that reminds me to think about a proper dish for next corporate ops... What?

Last night was a lazy dinner night; baked chicken breaded in panko and tarragon, sauted onions, radish, and mushrooms, and a green salad. About twenty-five minutes active time, and lots of points.

No sauce?
You have to have a sauce.

I love a good sauce as much as the next saucy capsuleer but... sauce on breaded chicken....sautéed onions....I'm feeling the meal, but not the absence of sauce.

I've been living in high sec too long, I guess.

WWAT?

Not sure if I should apply or not. I'm very interested in lore, do mainly exploration (RIP too many Asteros in ghost sites), but don't want to gain 50 lbs. Wat do?

Yockerbow; in the first place, losing Asteros in ghost sites?! We have a fit for that. Just don't try it in Guristas ghost sites, because light missiles are a pain.

That said, definitely send Xindi and I a mail, and put in an app!

Lastly, kale is a useful ingredient in some cases, but definitely not my go-to. I do have a fondness for spinach, though, provided you're using it in salads, or wilting it to serve alongside something-- never the gross, wet, textureless slurry we know spinach as from days of yore. Kale I've sometimes used as a spinach substitute, or added to stirfries where I want some extra texture.

Cheers,
Mak

And now a friendly bump in the form of an update!

Today, I went to the grocery store in that ideal stage of hungry where one both has an appetite, but also enough patience to actually cook. The result was portabella stuffed with shallot, prosciutto, and basil, topped with mozzarella. Very tasty stuff! As you'd imagine, the prosciutto provides enough salt that I didn't bother salting, just adding pepper at the various levels of the cheese. Between the prosciutto and the basil, no additional seasoning was needed. The shallots, of course, were sauteed to the point of being lightly caramelized before they were thrown in with the mix.

Chicken pesto lasagne

I gave it a serious thought. I am a bit perplexed that I never thought about lasagne as op food before! Prepare stuff, put in oven, wait 45min - devour result! I have to look into some details about lasagne again. My past results were rather... random. I always have the feeling that I just don't know what I'm actually doing with all those layers in the baking dish Roll

Speaking of not knowing, I had the most wonderful experiment a few days back. We decided to cook some prehistoric stuff, that is, only foodstuff with regional history of at least 5000 years. Not an easy task, cause we wanted only fresh ingredients. We ended up with a clay pot full of stag filet, bell beans, peas, fennel leaves, and fresh chanterelles. The only spice used was some grinded sea salt. It was an experiment and the clay pot made the best of it. The first 50min cooking time left us suspicious, though. The beans and the mushrooms still had a very ... prominent taste so we added another ~20min. In the end, it was a delicious meal with a slightly archaic touch Big smile

Edit: Oh, em. Since off topic is a serious crime I should propably add: IKAME - Exploration! Lore! Cooking!^^

Always need more warm bodies to fight them Drifters, and when we aren't fighting Drifters, there is much lore and exploration shenanigans to be had in game and on Slack.

In food related news, what's a weird thing you've had to do because you were missing an important ingredient?
I remember one time I came over to cook dinner for my parents; they had no butter, so I learned how to make a beurre blanc sauce with margarine.

In other news, we're organizing public Drifter Hive raids under the name The Consortium! Check out Consortium Operations in-game, and hit us up if you're keen to be on the inside. ;)

As is customary, a food update.

I've started really loving the mix of onions, shallots, and mushrooms sauteed in butter. If you use, say, chanterelles (which are conveniently in season right now!), the taste is absolutely lovely. I've used this mix as the base of a red wine sauce, just as they are over potatoes or over bread, and-- yeah. Just try it.

Oh, hey! A bump!

Needless to say, the Consortium is going well. We're starting to get some traction on our first element auction, even. :D
