Showing my support for the release of full 3D models. With tools like the GMod and Rockstar editors, it's easier than ever for someone with little or no experience in video editing to make a compelling short. If we can import the EVE assets like ships or character models into those editors, we'll be able to easily create scenes that fall outside the scope of what is possible with just EVE on it's own.

I'm not sure if any of you realize this but TriExporter still works to get the models, music, and other assets you are asking for. You just need to use the right tools to render and produce it. Autodesk, Adobe and such are good places to start for the programs you need. There are even some free programs that you could use for it but I can't recall what they are atm.

Edit: The file path for the games assets is different now after one of the recent patches/expansions. A quick google search told me where to look. I think it's in your documents folder or something.

On this note, while tools to enhance video cinematics are great, I would like to say that some of us are quite opposed to the notion of any kind of 'Battle Recorder', or other means to play back recorded Eve netcode (like the /record and /demo commands from some shooters of yore).

A game like Counter-Strike. or even World of Tanks, is essentially sport. A game of football or a motor race lends itself well to endless replays, to be carefully discussed, studied and enjoyed.

Eve is an open world sandbox that benefits from the 'Fog of War'. Information is power and it's important that people have to work for that information. I'm not sure I'd like anyone to be able to record everything on a grid and play it back at their leisure.

Positioning on a grid is vital to strategy. Not every Fraps recording will show you exactly where a dictor was before it cloaked or which ship from a tightly knit group dropped a cyno. From overview ranges you can extrapolate some information about the spatial positioning of a hostile fleet but never to the same extent as being able to pan around them at your leisure.

Presently, one person's recording may be less valuable than another's. One person may not be on grid at the right time, or have the right overview settings, or do a 'Look At' on the right ship to see who is neuting who... or precisely which ship was smartbombing which drones.. and so on.

My best scout should not be interchangeable with my worst. Otherwise they would not need to even be present at all and we could just send recorded replay files to them after the event.

As Eve players, the hours and days we invest into tracking fleets or events that interest us - or even spying - all involves actually playing the game. I'd rather be rewarded for playing the game as opposed to getting a file in my email that contains all the answers I seek. It's also - frankly - more exciting to turn to your best scout and send him out on a mission like some sci-hero, rather than saying "here, this file has the answers, study from timestamps 41:23 to 59:40".

Sharing with someone a Fraps recording of what you saw is very different to offering them a window to freely explore for themselves what happened.

An integral aspect on which the Eve-Is-Real motif hinges is to be able to say, "I was there, this is what I saw".

TLDR - Plese don't release cool software that would allow motivated players to become better tacticians, and therefor beat us in fights more often... (???)

Not exactly relevant to the topic, Mr Rooks and Kings.

Your objection is noted, though... ;)

Here's something I'd quite like to see in-game; though it'd likely take a fair bit of programming time...

It's currently possible to green-screen the character 'View Full Body' mode. Adding 'machinima-style' hotkeys - for example, swapping between poses or facial expressions, would be great for video production.

Being able to swap lighting options would be great too.

Those aren't tacticians.

It's very close to the heart of the topic: several of the requests here touch on the concept of a Battle Recorder.

For the record, I'm also opposed to any other software that produces a result which could masquerade as in-game footage (as opposed to cinematic footage). Such software would be an assault on the notion of events that have happened in Eve and on the unique appeal of the game.

It's important when we see Eve footage (and especially HUD-on footage), that we know we are witnessing a 'real' virtual-world event that is the culmination of hundreds of man-hours of effort, planning, drama and excitement. Everything you see should be a piece of online history - and therein is the value of having witnessed and recorded it.

Eve is not a MOBA; it will never compete in the area of tight, ritualised and formulaic repetition of well worn paths. But well worn paths sometimes become ruts. Eve is more 'real' than that, hence the popular meme. It may yet outlive its competitors.

You make several good points here, and as much as I would love to be able to analyze where my enemies came from based on video footage taken from a battle recorder I agree, a lot of Eve tactics are the result of Fog of War scenarios going well or poorly for one party or another, keeping that fog in the mix is beneficial to us all.

I'd been thinking about making a post in F&I asking for the option to export player characters into ragdoll/object files and texture files that could be used in other programs like SFM etc. (Some people have touched on this I think). I gather that there might be issues with different 3d animating programs use different model and texture files... but imagine the Clear Skies series made with actual eve avatars.

Also imagine just how many different characters for animating you could create by hitting randomize -> export, randomize -> export.

On a second thought.... what do EVE avatars have in the way of facial expressions/talking animations?

Anyway

One more thing. I know it doesn't really have much to do with the toolkit but can we please have an option to nuke the ingame camera wobble? It is super annoying when you have to speed up video clips.

Mizhir, I wanted you to know I am actively following up with CCP on this and they're going to see if it's possible. Thank you for bringing it up. If it is something toggle-able it would be great for video producers to have the option. Cheers!

I probably mentioned it before but a thing that would be highly beneficial is an easily accessible database that has all the submitted alliance logos. Namely this can just be a drop box or whatever that automatically pulls the relevant alliance data (based off their ID code) and places the image into the folder. It'd be helpful for a variety of reasons, some of which are personally beneficial to what I do with the Nullsec Recaps and so forth.

At present, the only way to really get this data is to know the alliance's ID number and manipulate a URL or by searching on dotlan/EVE-Gate which can be laborious and very tedious.

Thanks.

Things I would be happy as a pig in smelly stuff to see:

SHIPS / MODELS:
A) The abilty to export a 3d model to use in blender etc, or a cache of these models to download (ships, stations, deployables etc)
B) Failing the above, the ability to view a ship against a green screen as we can with avatars
C) If b, then the ability to set the ship on a constant motion spin
D) Models of weapons
E) Clean renders of the weapon icons in downloadable packs

LOGOS:
A) Corporation and Alliance logos to be exportable in their proper quality (currently ripping them from screen and rotoscoping can lose some detail) or the ability to download this data against a transparent background
B) Asset packs of other in game logos, faction / pirate symbols, some of the feature text that appears on ship hulls etc

SOUND:
A) Clean exports of some of the basic sounds. Enter/Exiting warp, ships exploding, creepy incursion/wormhole noises etc
B) Exports of Auras spoken lines

MISC VISUALS:
A) Clean renders of a warp tunnel (they tend to skip when recording as the new system loads) and other generic / transition screens
B) Any in game fonts we are allowed to use as downloadable font packs
C) A pack of Eve logos / artwork / titles we are allowed to use, with any restrictions very clearly defined within the pack

Thanks for trying to get something like this started CCP Manifest!

Oh hello everyone! Sorry about the lack of updates. I've been otherwise quite busy. Chance Ravinne brought this up again today and helped me realize I hadn't revisited this in a while, so here I am.

The past several months have kept this slowly heating up, but on the backburner.
Over the months..

  • I've scoped out the project more myself, including crowdsourcing some ideas and reading through this thread
  • I've got all the music gathered, and some of the sounds I want to include
  • I've got a fair amount of images ready that are already available
  • I've had several meetings on scope, particularly with the trailer team on new video elements I'd like to add
  • I think I've nailed down the right hosting solution
  • Had a scope discussion with the graphics team about custom graphics
  • I had a preliminary discussion with the legal department on how best to handle this (likely will be very very similar to the Fansite Toolkit and 3rd Party Dev stuff, but I hope simpler)
  • I had a brief exchange with the audio guys for a little custom short musical pieces to go along with it
  • I've made a couple proof of concepts creatives with my rudimentary skills.

That lead me to a place where I realize that even though I scoped it down considerably, this would be a second-level project, especially for the graphics/video teams. They might be able to work on it some here and there, but honestly couldn't promise anything. That isn't a reflection of their enthusiasm for the idea or their will to get the best player creators in gaming some extra cool little bits and bobs, it's just the hard facts of them having a crappton of other work that many more people are dependent on.

So right now I'm still left to do the following

  • vRefine some of the proofs of concept creatives and get them at least to approval level. That means this won't be as super polished as if an uber professional did it, but at least I am learning new skills!
  • Take the proof of concepts back tot he audio team for them to assess whether they can shoehorn in some time for extra audio
  • Have a final discussion with the legal department
  • Put out the first version in the wild and expand from there.

Good news: I am moving more of my official job over to social media, which means I can get away with spending some more time on this project. I am also less chained to formal processes than before, since a more collective approach to this project isn't currently in the cards due to the above. I should also have some time in the next few weeks to do so before the All-Consuming-Maw-That-Is-Fanfest eats me alive as it does every year.

Bad news: The first version won't quite be what I wanted to shoot out as the first version. Obviously it's way later than I wanted. My proof of concepts could suck and not get approved.

So, there you go. Hope that update helped shed some light on the project status.
