Hungry? Always.

Xindi, what are you considering Salisbury steak? Wikipedia tells me it's usually a steak ersatz using ground meat and various extenders...?

Well at it's most basic, it's essentially a hamburger patty in brown gravy, but frozen dinners are usually made with the cheapest meat available, a bunch of binders and some black magic to make it actually taste good.

My gravy at least was made with real beef stock and had mushrooms and onions in it.
And I made leftovers
that I put in plastic containers I got takeout in

I've always wanted to try a real salisbury steak made from scratch, I may have to try doing that this week. Big smile

All this talk of Salisbury Steak inspired me to make some. Yummy! I had it with mashed potatoes, corn, and sweet peas. The sauce was a french onion base with mushrooms and red wine. Will make again! I shall enjoy more tomorrow for lunch at work! Tomorrow I plan on making chicken salad with pecans and cranberries ^_^ In a related matter, I couldn't resist the strawberries at the grocery store, dear god I love this time of year!

In a corp related matter, join us for fun convo, cooking tips, lore, and explo. I would love a few more US TZ players! Makoto runs a good crew!

Happy days! So, we're plotting our expedition to the new fortified WH systems when they hit TQ, and getting corp TS3 servers set up. Shenanigans to follow. More explorers wanted, as always. \o/

More plans, and more scheming.
Ramping up for corp ops soon, and working to get the pieces in place to make stuff out of any shineys we find.

Drop Mak or myself a line if you want in on these shenanigans.

And in other news, IKAME led an op into one of the new Drifter holes! We're keeping mum because we have plans, but for now, behold our in-character report. :D

It's not as detailed as some posts I've written, but I was writing it after the end of a marathon operation, and wanted to get details out quickly without breaching opsec for future raids.

Hurrah, exploration shenanigans!

It is time to give some explicit details on yesterdays wormhole operation. The tight schedule did not allow for great efforts of haute cuisine. But nourishment became vital after several hours. Luckily, being caught cloakily between drifter and awakened patroler gave a break for a pan full of beef cevapcici. Potatoes could boil their time without need of cook's attention. Less multitasking was generally prefered during the operation ... but seldom achieved. Salt and kibbled pepper (green, red, black) were the only spices at hand, but I found some leftover arugula which went well with sweet oil and apple flavored vinegor. All in all, I was surprised that I did not have to rely on sythetic food replacements and intravenous diet during the op! Two pints of pilsner framed the food break. At the end of the operation I missed some good wine, though. I had none. But after spotting Mr. Tukoss in the overview I had to default to rum anyway. Op solved!

And in other news, our op on Tuesday evidently went very well indeed.

Unfortunately, doing marathon exploration ops last weekend did make me susceptible to the bug the miss got.

So: what does a sick explorer do? Cook soup!

Honestly, most of it was your standard mirepoix: carrots, celery, onion. The miss also added shiitake mushrooms and swapped half the veggie broth for mushroom broth, to give the soup a bit more backbone. Tasty stuff! French lentils and fennel rounded it out.

In preparation for this weekend's operations, I decided to both have an indulgent dinner beforehand, and everything in place for a quick-and-filling breakfast tomorrow!

The dinner, to say again, was quite a bit more indulgent than my normal fare. It involved tenderloin (seared, in this case), potato, asparagus under the broiler, and morels. The morels I lightly toasted in a pan to encourage them to sweat before adding butter, salt, and pepper. As the steaks were still going when the morels were prepped, I pulled the morels, and then dumped the newly-made morel butter over the steaks. Once the steaks were done, the pan was deglazed with a bit of Malbec, and the resulting sauce was poured over potatoes, steak, and-- well, by that stage, I'd already eaten the morels.

So tasty.

Tomorrow's mid-op breakfast will consist of back bacon, sausage, eggs, bread, tomato, and mushrooms. If I had baked beans and black pudding, it'd be a full fry-up! As it is, it'll still be a hearty and well-needed breakfast.

Oh, and speaking as a yank: black pudding is actually surprisingly tasty, and also ridiculously easy to make. It's essentially blood, fat, and oats, baked into a loaf, with slices then pan-fried until black on both sides. Easy peasy, and brilliantly rich and flavorful. Do hunt down a recipe and try it if you've the slightest inclination.

Well those last two OP could have gone better, but hey, at least we have our radioactive bread.

So todays brunch was random soup.
I started sautéing off some onions to put on a couple brats then decided instead I'd make french onion soup instead.
Then I realized I don't actually have any beef stock, so I threw some chuck into a pot with some water and a carrot, and a packet of concentrated beef "flavor" (at least according to the ingredients it is mostly beef stock concentrate and the essence of savory). Mixed that in with the caramelized onions and got a pretty onion beef soup.

We have bread, and we also have a report care of Lucas Raholan's Hilen Tukoss brain bit!

Fun times had by all.

Interested parties may wish to learn that I had my first attempt at paella last night. It's surprisingly easy! Mind, I did make some alterations to the standard recipe, simply because I happened to already have salbitxada on hand. Salbitxada, just so you know, is a Catalan sauce very much like sofrito, excepting that it has a bit more olive oil and roast almonds, and omits the onion. In using the salbitxada, I did add onions back into the recipe, used arborio rice as an alternative to bomba (which isn't readily available here), and then proceeded to boil mussels, clams, and shrimp in the broth as the rice cooked.

Definitely delicious, and definitely doing it again!

MMMM Pallela.
I'm just making some cream corn. Nothing special.

Not what I had today, but I have decided the best topping for steak is sauteed mushrooms and onions mixed with a bit of reduced soy sauce and a drop of Worcestershire and mix a pad of butter in at the end (like if you were making a burre blanc). if you pan fried the steak, that's what you deglaze the pan with.

So, if anyone is keeping score, IKAME has now had 3 mentions in the Scope, Makoto was featured specifically, as well as a mention of another person (Lucas Raholan) for what he found on an official IKAME op, and CCP has just gotten around to giving a few of us medals.
