EVE Ships Flash Cards

As you might have noticed, EVE has quite a few different ship types. Getting all (or at least a big number) of them into one's head is therefore quite some work.

I decided to make life easier for myself by creating a set of flashcards. Those worked well in school and university, so why not for EVE as well?. I'm using the software Anki (ankisrs.net) for this purpose. This software is available for the major desktop and mobile operating systems.

I have decided to share these flashcards. You can find them here: Google Drive. Just download the card deck and import it into Anki.

For the software developers amonst us: I've put the scripts that I've written for this on Github.

This is just a first version, so there might be errors or room for further improvements. I might also add more info later on, like a ship's typical roles, tank and engagement distance (brawler, kiter, sniper).

If you find an error, have an idea for improvement, or just find the cards useful, I'd like to hear from you Smile.

A note about special edition ships:
Ships that are just painted differently than their "base ships" but otherwise have exactly the same attributes (e.g. Catalyst Serpentis Edition) are not included in the list. Thanks go to Sir Substance for validating my list of ships.

Update: bug-fix release 1.0.2 available (see this comment).

No one should need flash cards for the new UI icons. Since CCP made them flat, monochromatic and boring, something that looks like was designed by a 3rd grader with a crayola crayon and construction paper, they're universally and quickly recognizable now. Shocked

That being said .. nice work from the players ... (that aren't 3rd graders with a crayola crayon and construction paper)

Did I mention that the new UI icons sucketh wads ?!?! Sorry, sorry. its just a sore spot.

Hi Tristan,

Thanks for all your work. I've had a quick look at this and I' ve no doubt that it will be a handy tool, especially for newer players, but also for me!

I have just uploaded a new release that fixes a few issues.

Unfortunately the new release cannot be imported into a card deck that is using the old version; the import would just create new cards instead of updating the old ones.
This is due to a change that I made to make updating more robust in the future.

This means that before importing the new version, you'll either have to create a new Anki profile for that, or you have to delete the old cards. In future releases this will not be necessary; instead you'll be able to update.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I thought I'd better do this early on instead of later.

kind of cool idea.. you could make an actually deck of playing cards out of them.
or you could even do silhouettes on one side to study the way WWII navy and airforce used to so they could identify specific ships quickly.

  - remove the cloaked from local; free intel is the real problem, not  "afk" cloaking -

Yeah, the possibilities are endless Smile
Once you have the data in some machine readable format, it's not difficult to get it into Anki. There you can format it in many ways; the layout of the cards is defined in HTML. So having the ship's image on the "question" card and the ship's name (and data) on the "answer" card is very easy to do.
To bad Anki can't print; but should be possible to do with Word and its mail-merge feature.

And, after we memorize this boatload of useless information...what next? Shocked

The right to free speech doesn't automatically carry with it the right to be taken seriously.

If you find it useless, why don't you just do something else instead that's more useful for you? Life can be so easy...

Sounds kind of neat, but I am going to be honest, Iam not interested in downloading yet another program on my computer, at least just to look at flashcards.

If you hosted finished picture or something like Rain6637 did, then I would definitely scroll through them.

Still, it's nice that your creating something for the community, so hats off to you regardless Cool

I've built it this way because the application I'm using (Anki) handles things like repetition for you. So if you learn a new card, then it will come up again after a short period. If you then still know it, the interval gets a bit bigger; if not, the interval gets shorter. And so on. So it tries to help you learn stuff as efficiently as possible.

However, if it's useful to have these cards in some other format, please describe the use case in a bit more detail. I already have the data, so to transform it into some other representation might not be too difficult. But I need to understand the use case first Blink

Great idea. Your version beats the hell out of the ones I made out of index cards.

If it isn't included yet, I would suggest adding in some FC/scout relevant info like threat level (for target calling), effective T2 ranges, etc.

And ditto on adding new software.. sorry.

Not yet. But I plan to add some addtional info step by step. But that will happen slowly, as I can't just extract this from the database. The first step will probably be adding a ship's typical role, e.g. EWAR, logi, sniper etc.

If someone suggests me a good web-based flashcards application, that also has companion apps for at least Android and iOS, then I'm willing to look into supporting it. A prerequisite is that there's some kind of API to create cards in batch. And it has to be free to use.

I thought the new UI icons were awful till I looked through that. Now they make sense. You have rained on my UI Icon hate.

I have just released a bug-fix release (version 1.0.2).

This version fixes the "meta group" field that was incorrect for some ships.

You can download the new version here: Downloads
Please have a look at the Release Notes; they contain update instructions.

If any problems come up when updating, feel free to either post here or contact me in game. If it works smoothly, I'd also like to know Big smile
