New Player with many questions...

Hello all,

First, I need to say that this game is fantastic. Much better then WoW...! It actually reminds me of the old Everquest where exploration and discovery was most of the game and quests were just something you did to get your epic item.

So I love it so far (4 days in).

This said, the learning curve is pretty steep. I therefore have a couple questions:

1) Grouping

Can you group with other players and what does it do practically? Can it automatically share the loot?

2) How can you share coordinates?

So if a friend is online and you want to meet him at his exact location, is it possible to get his "warp" locations and quickly meet him? How?

3) Can I visit other racial zones

I am Minmatar. Can I go around and visit the other racial zones? Is it dangerous? and where do I go to cross to the other racial zone?

4) Buying or Selling...

When looking at the market window, the entries under SELLING are the ones that want to SELL or is it the window where my products would go if I wanted to SELL them?

5) Shipping stuff

Can you have cargo and ships sent automatically for you to another station?

6) Trades between toons

can you trade ISK between your characters?

many thanks for the help

1) yes, everything. its what eve is about.
How to find the corp that is right for you

2) click-drag the location from the top left of the ui into a chatbox and post that, from there your friend can right click and set destination,
this will get him to the system or station you are in.

to find a friend in space you can warp to them if you are in a fleet togeather.

to find a "friend" in space you need combat probes.

3) yes , you can go wherever you like, nowhere is safe though.

4) yes, you can have your sell orders highlighted if you like, check the settings tab in the market ui

5) no but you can pay other players to do that for you.

6) yes but i believe you are restricted in this regard while on a trial.

First:

Welcome to EVE

Second:

Less hard returns in your post. It not only makes it easier to read, but also nice to quote.

Third:

The answers

1.Yes you can group with others in 2 ways in EVE (as it is unclear which of the 2 you mean).

You can join a player ran corporation (aka Guilds in other games) and do stuff together.

You can also fleet up with people (do activities together as a group). This means you can also automatically share any payment rewards (mission payments, NPC bounty payments) but for the actual item-loot, you ahve to share that manually between people.

What can you do as a fleet, anything. From missions to mining. From PvP to Incursions (where Incursions have to be done with multiple people). You name it and you can do it together with others.

2. again, 2 answers.

You can save the location in a bookmark and share the bookmark. Or (usually with friends the easier way), you can fleet up (see answer 1) and warp to each others location.

3. Yes. I started in Caldari space, then moved and lived in Amarr space, then null-sec, then Minmatar space and now in Gallente.

How to get there, by using the star gates. All K-space (so anything NOT wormhole) is linked together other then 3 regions (Jove space + CCP space) and can be visited by setting a course and moving from system to system.

Will it be hostile. Not by default, unless you have very bad standings with a certain NPC faction that controls the system, there is no penalty to be in other faction space.

If you are in Factional Warfare, there will be.

Other forms of risks are low-sec and null-sec.

4.

Buy orders (bottom part) = People setting up an order to buy an item for that amount of ISK from you under certain conditions (location, minimum quantitiy, total quantity).

Sell orders (top part) = People wanting to sell an item and want someone else to pay them that amount of ISK for it.

5. Nope

Like real world, nothing moves from A to B magically. You either move it yourself there or have someone else move it for you, for a price of course.

6.

Yes, right click any character and there should be an option called: Transfer ISK

Welcome.

Now before I answer any of your questions let me say this first...

Forget everything you have learned in previous MMOs. Your habits, tactics, preconceptions of how things should be... all of it. It will not help you here.

The reason I say this is because EVE will basically break all the "standard rules" that most MMOs follow in subtle, but important ways.

For example: In most MMOs, "griefing" is defined as willfully causing a player (and/or his/her playstyle) harm in a way that was not consensual.
In EVE, everyone and everyone can affect everyone else's "game" for better or worse whether or not consent was given.

With that out of the way... let's get started.
Pod Panik wrote:
1) Grouping

Can you group with other players and what does it do practically? Can it automatically share the loot?

You can "group" with other players by forming "fleets" with them. What this does, in practical terms, is...

- create an extra chat window (that only other people in the fleet can see).
- allow you to warp to your fleet members if they are more than 150km from you (as long as they are not docked).
- allow you gain small, almost insignificant "bonuses" in speed, HP, target speed/range, etc (provided that the "leader" has trained up the necessary skills).
- allow you to have a "fleet booster" using warfare links which significantly increases the bonuses noted in the last point (note: this requires VERY particular skills, modules, and ships)

As far as loot is concerned... first come, first serve. It is every pilot for him/herself.

Pod Panik wrote:
2) How can you share coordinates?

So if a friend is online and you want to meet him at his exact location, is it possible to get his "warp" locations and quickly meet him? How?

There are a couple ways that I am forgetting... but the oldest way is to fleet up with your friend and warp to him/her. Once you arrive, "bookmark" the location by left-click-holding your ship and navigating the radial until you find the "bookmark pin."

Pod Panik wrote:
3) Can I visit other racial zones

I am Minmatar. Can I go around and visit the other racial zones? Is it dangerous? and where do I go to cross to the other racial zone?

Race is purely superficial in this game. You can visit any area of the game as long as you have the proper standings (which you can find in your character sheet). In order to "lose standings" you have to run missions or attack Faction NPC ships. You only have to worry when you are below -5.0 standing.

Also note that there is no penalty or "special" bonus for training and using ships other than your character's race.

For example: My character here is of Gallente orgin. I was once part of the Minmatar Militia (Faction Warfare) and often use Amarr, Minmatar, and the odd Caldari ship in addition to Gallente ships... along with the respective weapon systems.
I suffer no mechanical penalty for doing any of this.

Pod Panik wrote:
4) Buying or Selling...

When looking at the market window, the entries under SELLING are the ones that want to SELL or is it the window where my products would go if I wanted to SELL them?

The box under the "selling window" are buy orders.

Basically people are saying "I'll buy X thing for Y amount of ISK."

I would advise caution when dealing with the market. There are some VERY, VERY smart people who can manipulate products and orders like a combat specialist can use his/her ship.
Don't get greedy!

Pod Panik wrote:

No. You either have to do it yourself (using an Industrial ship) or pay someone to do it for you (remember to set the proper collateral).

6) Trades between toons

can you trade ISK between your characters?

As long as they are not trial accounts... yes. Simply right click the character in question, "give ISK."

Just an addition for question 5:

To have things Shipped, you create a courier contract, either publicly, or to a specific corporation, such as Red Frog Freight, or Push X Industries. You're protected from loss by setting a collateral value on the contract, which the person moving it has to put up. If it's lost, the collateral is released to you. If not, then they get it back.

It depends on a player being available to move things, at the price you set, but it generally doesn't take long, as long as you're paying market rate.

http://red-frog.org/jumps.php is an example.

Where do you go to see all the available contracts?

Shipping things around may be a good way to make ISK and visit the world for a new player like myself...

Oh and when you open the starmap, do you see only your racial zone or is that the whole EVE play area?

BTW, I am amazed how helpful the community is in EVE. Thanks a LOT guys!

you see the whole EvE map. BTW it is not very good currently but they're revamping it, in the meanwhile use

http://evemaps.dotlan.net/

and shipping things doesn't help you see the universe it just makes you a boring carebear. If you really want to fit a travel intie or a cov-ops and fly around. As a new player I suggest low/null exploration or mining/industry (not mainly mining) and dip your toes into PvP.

the starmap is the entire of new eden.

thers an option for colouring it by sovereignty which will show you whom owns where.

ill echo what Saha said, Eve allows for the predator role and even facilitates it in certain regards,
where most other mmos will ban you for ruining someone elses day, in eve this is completely legitimate and a viable play style.

you need to be aware of this as it can be something of a culture shock ,even to someone with a history of mmos.

Im not trying to sound edgy here but i would rather not see (another) ragequitting thread from someone who didnt know they could lose everytng they spent the last couple of weeks working for in a single ship explosion.

i highly recomend you read the New player FAQ,
section 7 is particularly important.

Re question 6; you can transfer ISK directly to other characters or corporations and you can trade ISK directly to other characters in a station trade.

These former trial account restrictions were changed back with the Phoebe update.

Many public courier contracts will require that you own a freighter (~1.2 billion ISK) and have several hundred million ISK for collateral. That's the ones that aren't scams.

Eve Menu -> Business -> Contracts. Click the 'Available contracts' tab and select courier.
Many are traps designed to separate you from your ISK. Most of the rest are slave-labour rates.

Nice...

Another question just popped-up as I was reading more about the game.

When it comes to Combat Sites, what type of ships do you need to do the lower-ends ones (1 to 5)?

It seems to be a fun and potentially profitable way to play the game.

depends on the site, can range from a frigate to a small fleet
though in highsec a well fit (and reasonably skilled) cruiser shouldn't have any problems ,
but again,
it depends on a couple of things.

Lots of good answers here. I'd like to add that Eve is a true MMO it needs to be played with other people. Due to it's depth as I think you have already seen you will need someone that you can ask questions as you go so you need to make some friends in this game. So find some public chat channels that are noob friendly or find a medium sized active corp friendly to noobs but these kind of questions and more you really need some people that you can back and forth with.

One tip a lot of corps and Alliances have public recruitment channels so you can join a few of those and talk to people and see which group seems like a better fit for you before you join if you like. That also allows you to see who is more active during your play time.

I came to this game from WoW and I can tell you forget everything that WoW taught you in this game. Bigger is not better. There is no level cap. There is no best in slot. There is no elietist jerks for Eve. There is no one way nor any best way to do anything only your way and someone else's way.

You don't need any best ship or best mod or max skills to do anything. You are perfectly cappable of being productive in fleet from day one. Don't wait for skill to train just go do it.

I meant the website elietistjerks.com which is a web site that tells you exactly how to "gear up" your WoW toon, what the best in slot items are what is the best PvE spec what is the best PvP spec what is the best rotation for the most dps and then people get in raid and it isn't even about following mechanics or participating in the group but if you spent enough alone time on elietistjerks to get ready to top the dps meters.

He being a WoW player would have known that I should have worded it a little better for the non ex-WoW players.

Yes there is. when all skills are all capped at V. The good thing is there is hundreds of mini-level caps (a skill at V) so new player will not have a hard time reaching the level of a bitter-vet

I read somewhere once that to train all skills to level 5 would take something like 22 years. The game has been out a little over half of that. My guess is that new skills will be added before anyone ever becomes all level 5. But I guess it will be like 10 more years before we see if I am correct or not.

But the thing is in a frigate Vs frigate situation only certain skills come into play therfore a new player can be maybe less than ~10% worse than a vet
