So I gave a EVE shot a few months ago. So far I had a pleasant experience, but nothing too stellar. I decided to come back to see if it sticks this time. I wanted to hit the ground running, though in my eagerness it was more like hit the ground face-first. I forgot to accept the mission from aura and spent 20 minuets slow boating back to base not realizing if I'm too close to warp I could bounce another target and come back. Roll So I decided to take it upon myself for some forum help to get me back up to speed in the months I've been gone. Here are some general questions:

1) There are some really useful guides I found but forgot the names of. One of them was how to fix your overview tab since stock setting are garbage, another was an advanced one about provoking mission runners to attack you while on suspect (with a fit that will demolish them). Also a guide on how to camp exploration sites would be handy as well.

2) I know PLEXing in the free trial time will burn you out. But with that said, how long does it take to become self sufficient at a reasonable pace?

3) In line with number two, what are good ways to make ISK, for I wouldn't say total noob, but someone who is definitely inexperienced. I loved running data sites in highsec on my previous trial. Are there better options? (Don't say low sec, I had a pirate show me the ropes of his .4 base. And well...lets just say you have to have preform a whole different level of operations there to keep you alive than in hisec.)

4) Again I forgot the names, of the useful (and legal) 3rd party programs and the sites a lot of people use around here.

5) What would be considered as essential information that every new capsuleer should learn?

1. http://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/21jpd6/sarashawa_overview_pack/ SaraShawa Overview Pack and E-Uni Overview Settings Guide http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Overview_Guide should get your overview up and running.
2+3. Your ability to make isk efficiently goes up with SP. Missions are usualy the most popular way of making isk at first while learning combat skills.
Station Trading is probably the best and fastest way of making isk for a newbie since it's the least skill intensive and most people create a low SP alt just for that purpose. There are numerous guides on how to station trade, just google them, here's the uni wiki page for trading http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Trading

Here's another overview guide, and likely the mission runner hunting guide you were thinking of:

Un-frell your overview.

and

http://evedarklord.blogspot.com/2014/03/carebear-to-killer.html

EDIT: the forum's censor makes that first link not work, either replace the stars with the "F word" in the url, or you can find a link to it inside of the mission baiting guide.

If you can skill it up, train for a nemises with blasters. Seriously, that thing caught me out several times on my FW alt both in bomber missions and exploration. It'll alteast make for a "lol wtf" killmail.

This is super dependant on what it is you wanna do to make isk. Personally, I don't plex a single one of my accounts and drive all my isk back in to pvp. A quick look at my killboard wil lshow some blingy losses. Going by plucking a number out of the air, though, I'd say about 2-3 month in so long as you've set up a good isk making method and the time to grind.

Ninja running nullsec data/relic sites can be profitable, and in a covops it's hard to catch you. Missions aren't super great isk, but they're super safe and can be run really well in a passive tank rattlesnake (it's like a drake on steroids and also pretty cheap for a faction battleship). Getting in to nullsec you can also run anoms, or my personal favourite learn about wormholes, scan them out and run c2 class sites with a cheap battlecrusier (passive drake is king of the hill, but any decent tanked BC can do it)

Plenty of these are out there in google, linked in this thread etc. There's so many tools, but some are situational to what it is you wanna do.

Learn to take losses like a boss. Don't get angry if you lsoe a ship/pod, get used to it. Getting a super efficient killboard is boring, dare to take some risks and have fun. It's a game, don't sweat it too much.

Woo fellow farscape fans! Anyways thanks for finding me those guides. The reason I wanted to find them is that I love exploration and I'm ok with mission running and knowing what tactics are going to be used against me is rather handy. And once I know what I'm doing I could try being on the other end of the guns Twisted.

Though another question I have is why do some people have "forum alts". Is there a reason to not show you face on here?

Attaboy!

Ralph can give you some good advice for that. Also on how to avoid it happening to you.

It's a way to avoid consequences for things you say on the forums. Or you're just really uncomfortable with sharing your in game character identity with people on the forums I guess.

Because corps like mine* ( amongst others ) kill people (in game obviously) over things said on the forums when we aren't actively hunting contracted war targets.
that's one of the glorious things about eve, we are all within each others sphere of influence at all times.
people have forum alts specifically to negate the accountability they would normally have for their words here ,
from both their enemies and their own Corp/alliance,
It's not entirely uncommon for corps to find themselves at war(or individuals thrown out of the Corp) because of something said here.

As for learning PvP, this is how I got started.

What doesn't this game get right? Endless player generated content, a rabbit hole of a metagame, lack of common sense is a socially unacceptable/punishable behavior, and the things you say have repercussions. I wish the rest of the internet was like that.

Since I don't trash talk or complain about balance, I think won't have much use for a forum alt in that case.

I post on my main, and I've probably earned enemies by doing so. Your forum persona (or perceived forum persona) impacts how people respond to you.

I highly recommend making a character named something like "Forum ShipToasterAlt" and actually train them as a PVP character. Everyone underestimates a character like that.

Ok, so I have a few more questions for you capsuleers.

1)(Though it won't be a while until I venture into lowsec). Is there a way to tell if a exploration site is being camped by explorer hunters?

2) I've heard that relic sites in hisec aren't worth it compared to the loot you get from data sites. But that was before rhea, so did that change? Also what's the difference between data site and relic site loot anyway?

3) What to do if a site is being ran by another explorer?

4) Also how do I take screenshot, print screen just takes a pic of my desktop when running eve. Sad

1) If you are alone in local, the exploration site is empty. If not - it might be a trap. The trick is to do exploration in ships that are cheap enough that you aren't devastated to lose one, and/or in ships that can fight back.

2) The loot is broadly similar but more of it in the better ones, IIRC.

3) Kill them, and take their stuff, then politely thank them for the donation.

4) Not sure.

On lowsec - There are parts of low that are very dangerous, and these are usually the most obvious borders with nullsec and/or highsec. Other areas are quiet. If you want an area of lowsec to explore that is significantly quieter than most, try the region Solitude, and roam around in a ship you don't mind losing in the areas that aren't close to nullsec. Do not take the shortest available route into Solitude, take a different one.

1) Not alone in local=bad. got it. As for cheap ships I been following Sir Livingstons exploration guides, for both the heron and magnate for when I try out low sec. Both can pay themselves off in 1 or 2 sites and have a relatively low SP requirements.

2) So it IS worth it to do both data and relic sites? Livingston said decryptors are worth far and away more than T1 salvage

3) I know that scanning frigates aren't too tough, but whats to stop them from doing the same to me? Element of surprise? Likelihood of being unarmed? In that case, what weapons do you recommend to kill them before they warp off?

4) Sad
