Some other large trade hubs are Amarr, Dodixie, Rens, and Hek. For some reason we have two in Minmatar space. Which you should go to however I can't really help you with. If trading is your thing tough, you can check for goods that are sold for less in one hub, and sell them in a hub where the prices are higher to make a profit.

If you intend to produce and/or trade, as your post implies, It's very useful to live in the same region as a trade hub, or one jump away from such a system.

Are there any regions you feel you understand the economy of well? For instance, the Placid region has its economy dominated by three things - Factional Warfare primarily, convenient access to both highsec and nullsec secondarily, and the presence of EVE Uni's lowsec campus as a tertiary factor.

There are market consequences of that that create opportunities for someone willing to produce or import goods that appeal to EU LSC folks and export goods generated by FW.

If you had significant knowledge of that region and how its economy plays out, it might make sense to live in Placid but in a system with convenient access to a major hub - which would result in you setting up in Orvolle or Stacmon.

Yes set up in Jita, buy stuff you think they might need in nearby missioning hubs. Look up where all the level 4 and 5 agents are and stock those stations they are located in.

It'll take some research but I imagine there would be some profits to be made simply by having it available at the same stations the mission runners are at. Things like ammo, drones, nanite repair paste; I dunno just throwing some ideas out.

Choosing a home system/region comes down to what you want to do with your time in the game. If you're looking to do PVP, look for systems in Lowsec that are obnoxiously active. You can also join a Nullsec alliance and they'll provide you a "staging" system in which they take fleets out of.

Doing PVE, it also depends on what you want to do. Some systems/regions provide better spawn rates for mining than others, as well as some are safer to mine in than others etc.

It ultimately comes down to the big question "what do you want to do?"

PVP can be found in all security bands - highsec, lowsec, non-sov nullsec, sovereign nullsec and wormhole space.

I did a forum search on home base and picked some of the more obvious links from the first 5 pages.

As I am not going to use it any more- mainly because when in empire I operate out of another system - and because no one has left any concrete suggestions I will give you the system I used when I was fairly new. It's 6-7 jumps from Jita and wonderously free of high sec war deccers (I saw one (1) hostile pilot during quite a few war decs around my home base. If you check it out on dotlan you will fairly soon understand why. It's high sec with industrial facilities and so on. Good market for your products as well for equally obvious reasons.

If you really want to be in the business end of Eve I don't think it's a good Idea to have a "home". You kind of have to get used to the idea of keeping your eye on various things and moving with market indicators.

As other people have stated the fact that you completely left out what part of business in Eve you want to get into it's really hard to help. What I can tell you is that Eve is much more like real life markets than any other MMO that I am familiar with. If this were WoW I could tell you about the various ways that there are to make money in game.

In Eve I've noticed that when I jump into a market I can see my own impact on that market. For example if you ramp up to make rifters and sell them in Jita then you can watch rifter prices drop as you adding to the supply will naturally reduce price if demand remains unchanged. On the flip side of that I was once part of a group effort to set up a micro trade hub in low sec, one of those "if you build it they will come" kind of things. The point is that in Eve we have a player driven market and player driven economy it's not like other games where the bulk of all transactions are between players and NPCs. The result of that is if anyone showed you exactly how they make isk and you were to duplicate their efforts not only would you eliminate their profits but you'd be unable to make any yourself.

Eve business is not easy. It takes knowledge of all aspects of the game. That being said there are things that newbies can do to make isk and there have been some recent upheaval within manufacturing which has vets having to relearn things as if they were newbs themselves so in that respect we are all kind of on the same playing field.

One old standard of game that remains unchanged is that each character can have a maximum of only so many production lines. Ammo is a consumable item that most players use on a very regular basis and is also very cheap to buy so many players with big money in manufacturing won't bother wasting production lines on ammo regardless of the margin as the absolute isk potential per time frame is just not there for them. Judgements like "worth it" or "not worth it" are very subjective however and what isn't enough isk for one player to wipe his ass with is like winning the lottery for another.

You'll have to get used to moving around and get familiar with markets or create them if you feel that ambitious. You don't have to know everything about the game or everything about every market but you will have to pick something and watch it. I've done things before like if I'm running an epic arc mission and wind up needing something that is not available close by when I run to a market hub to get one I'll pick several and stock a local station which can work great if you don't need to make your isk back any time soon.

This is probably starting to sound repetitive but at the end of the day the best place for you to start off is nowhere that anyone else tells you to go. Even if they are being honest with you if the market that they are involved in had room for more volume they would most likely be filling it.
