Armor or Shield tank for Arty specialist?

Although it may not be the smartest plan, I plan to specialize in artillery, progressing through the ship sizes, fitting artillery on each ship. I realize that each ship has different strengths, but generally, which is better for arty ships? Armor or shield tanking?

If it helps, I plan to PvE mostly, at first, then join in on some FW.

Thanks.

What ships?

I got Thrasher and Slasher fits that only have a Damage Control for a tank. Artillery Rifters and Firetails have a DC and a Small Ancilliary Armor Repairor. All this is for PVP

Well I'd like to use the Rupture for starters. I've heard of a few decent arty fits for it.

Base your armor v. shield tanking decision on what the ship hull gets bonuses for. Barring that, base on what it naturally has the highest score/resists for.

As said.

It is NOT the guns that make you use Armor or Shield.

It is the ship you are using. It depends on the bonus a ship gets and in general slot layout of a ship.

Makes sense. I'm just wondering if I should go really crazy with the tanking skills one way or another.

Alright. I just hate having to train up a bunch of skills before taking a ship out for a spin, but it's worth it in the end.

i did the same thing with beam lazors,
i would recommend against it personally as (while fine for pve) when it comes time to start pvp,
you will only be able to fill one role so you will only have a handfull of ships to play with, and that role may not even be commonly needed.
if i were in your position right now i would buy the skill books for drones, armour, shields, each races wepons and ships up as far as cruisers and train the lot to 3-4 (obviously 5 when its a pre requisite )and try flying as many and as varied things as possible before committing to specialising.

there are a myriad of different roles and variants on how to fulfill that roles objectives and your going to rob yourself of possibly something you may genuinely enjoy , having done exactly that ( 1 year, 9 months playing and im only branching out in the last 6ish month) i regretted it

As someone that is *extremely* specialised in two weapons systems (hybrids and drones), my advice is that it is occasionally a nuisance to be so specialised, but it also has rewards. I do not know any characters that can out-DPS me in a gank-fitted Talos, for instance.

If you are set on projectile weapons, I'd still train seriously into drones (as pretty much every ship larger than a frigate has a drone bay), and I'd recommend shield tanking. Most projectile ships are Minmatar, and most (certainly not all) Minmatar ships favor shield tanking over armor.

You will also find a number of more expensive ships reward some cross-specialisation. For instance, if I trained into shields and missiles, the Gila and Rattlesnake would become new options for me to fly that would get a lot out of my existing drone skills.

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

I probably can and haven't even gotten around to using one yet Big smile

OP, I have been studying Minmatar ships lately and it not only matters what hull you are using but what kind of activity you are doing, most of the PVP fits I have come up with use armor while the PVE fits have mostly ended up being shield. My recommendation is to bite the bullet and train both, at least to the point you can fit T2 mods, by the time you have that done, it will be easier to decide which you would like to specialize in.
