Ship skins moved to a slot

As it is now, vanity ship skins, like Nefantar edition, etc, while they only provide aesthetic value, require the base hull to be used to create a new ship, meaning that any rigs previously fit must be destroyed. This is a matter of great inconvenience when dealing with something large like the rorqual, but even with smaller ships like a Mackinaw, or say, your favourite battleship. Should you decide to upgrade the appearance, you must destroy the rigs, to apply the skin.

Well, why not add a ship slot, similar to how subsystems are, where the shipskin can be applied there, in station only? When you swap subsystems on a t3, it changes the appearance, so I don't think that changing the model would be all that difficult. And as long as the ship skin cannot be removed without being destroyed, it doesn't change the dynamic of them much, except giving players the ability to easily apply a new paintjob.

No, because it removes the risk in flying the original ship which you took the skin from.

I'm assuming you don't have just ONE Rorqual, right? Or are at least well able to buy more? Why not just apply the skin to one of your duplicate hulls before fitting it? Then you can park your regular Rorq and save it for a backup in case some innocent ship miner like myself comes along and decides to mine your ship. Pirate

CCP has already commented in the past that a slot is exactly how they're going to handle paint in the future, once the system is properly completed. You'll design your ship's appearance in the provided utility, which will create an item that can be fitted to a ship's paint slot. The design can be saved as well, allowing for easy creation of additional paint items in the future or for multiple paint items to be created (corp- and alliance-wide paint schemes).

They haven't commented on if the skin will be removable like a module or destroyed on removal like a rig, but they've definitely confirmed that OP's idea is exactly what they're going to do.

Sell rigged ship, buy new ship, apply new skin.


I find to move rigged ships it best to drop a few million per rig to move faster. Since you know, I can just buy the parts in pieces if charged market value. That and rare is the say BS where I was 100% happy with all 3 rigs (if T1). I am pretty sure I am not alone here.

Lose a few million on rigs should work out better than ripping out all of them.

t2 cargo rigged rorquals. Would lose at least 2-300mil selling them, and re-applying the rigs, given the low demand for them.

I have 2 rorquals, yes. Unfortunately both are tech 2 rigged, for quite some time now, and applying the ore skin would cost me a bit over 700m on top of the ore skin cost. Guess I'll wait for the paint job feature.


Hearing that this is an upcoming feature, excellent, guess this thread isn't needed heh.

I think skins should be destroyed when removed. It makes no sense that one could remove a paint job and then reapply that specific coating of paint to another ship later.

I completely agree, which is why I finished my original post with that sentiment, though perhaps it was a touch... confusingly worded.

The ship skin slot would ideally be like a rig slot: once added, it can only be removed via destruction. It allows removal of ship skins but not their reuse and should certainly save CCP on naming conventions.

Additionally, some people are not in a location where they can easily sell their rigged ship... such as in a wormhole. A rig-like slot works best.

Cloaking is the closest thing to a "Pause Game" button one can get while in space.

Support better localization for the Japanese Community.
