o/ all!

I have wanted to start this thread for a while, and some of the recent topics have made it seem to be appropriate now, so here goes.

Mission Statement:
This thread is for new players to post questions on, and have them answered by veterans in an effort to make the early time in New Eden a bit less painful and confusing.

Guidelines:
Please post any question that you need help on, we will try to answer.

Please keep comments on topic (as much as we evil demigods possibly can)

And please save trolling for the General Discussion thread. We want to help new players get better, expand their horizons, and end up as quality victi....players who we may share space with for years to come.

A bit about me, so you know I'm not making this **** up.
I gained my pilots license in the summer of 2012, and have played almost constantly since then. I was a solo industrialist, miner, and screwy noob until I joined a high sec ratting corp. I learned a lot from those guys (now named Rat Catchers) and got hooked on the community of eve. I left there, became a renter in Scalding Pass nullsec, moved to low/border high sec, then to Spacemonkey's Alliance, an alliance in the CFC. After getting tired of TRI, MOA, Mittens, and political CTAs, I packed up my Prowler and moved to wormhole space. No telling where I'll go from here, but I love the thrill of living in the middle of nowhere with no grind, no fucks, and no local.

Ask me what you want and I'll be happy to help.

Hopefully the community will too.

Uhm, isn't the entire idea behind NCQA this.

New Citizen Q&A.

This entire part of the forum is for people to make their own threads with their questions, and get them answered. Why would they post it in a thread where it will quickly get filled with answers from different questions and thus very hard to find the info they need, when they can have their own thread where all answers are related to their question (or at least should be related).

Sure, anything beats the other guy.

And I like his idea, but as said, the thread will end up like the in game help chat, with multiple questions and a bucket load of answers, which means a new player has to sort out all the irrelevant stuff from what is relevant to him.

So, it might just be easier to have your own thread with your questions (and your own topic, so people can *cough* use the search function later on) and answers made for you in it.

My reasons behind a single Q and A thread are pretty simple. For a new player muddling through our complex world its a challenge to just find previous threads on this forum. Having the "ask a vet" thread hopefully will give a starting point for people to look through before posting threads to ask the same question that 26 people before them have. Since there are threads in detail on every topic this would also be a good central point to refer people out to other threads. I think it will help, but the community will have to be the judge. Believe me, this is not some ego trip of "look at my threadnaught!" Its just an attempt to make life a tiny bit easier for our new players.

Who are you and why would newbies line up to ask you questions instead of just asking the entire forum by starting a new thread?

Hmz...very hard to type in some key words in the search box...

See your Question in previous threads > read it

Don't see it > Ask in new thread.

When in doubt > Ask in new thread, you will get the answers (and possibly a link to older thread).

As for making it "a linking database" to other very helpful threads, I like that. But there is already something like that stickied to this forum called "EVE New Citizens Q&A Resources", with links to helpful forum posts. It also says, that if you spot a post that should be added, you can EVEmail Atechu and he will add them if he deems it true.

Hmm, fair point about the Resources thread. I may see what links there before I get too enthusiastic with things in the future.

I've just been terribly bothered lately by the lack of a central place to browse info for new players. A lot of folks I know are a bit embarrassed to post a thread here, and would rather lurk and read a rambling thread where they could glean lots without having to put themselves out there as an uninformed pilot. With a lot of the sites such as Nevilll Smit being slow on posting updates, and Jester shutting down (all politics aside) there is a lack of current clearing houses for eve guides. I'll research the resources thread more, but it still brings me back to the question of where a new pilot could go to save the time of slogging through Google results?

Two years ago, I was there. No clue how to do things, too scared to post and look the fool, and wanting to learn. I wish something like this had been here then, but I had to find tigerears.com jesterstrek.com and a lot of others the slow way.

So off to resources now. Thanks J'poll, people like you are what makes the community of eve so enjoyable.

They shouldn't.

NCQA is a terrific place to ask their questions, mainly because we are all on quite a short leash by CCP/ISD here.

I can imagine that GD is a scary place for a new player to post, but NCQA has some of the most helpful players around (hell, often I still learn new tricks and stuff by reading here).

Well, I would say here and the EVE Uni wiki (still find it weird that in NCQA Resources CCP Spitfire links to the official EVElopedia, which on 99.99% of the entries is horribly outdated, while EVEUni's wiki is quite accurate).

Then again, I'm slightly biased, as I think this is a great place to learn EVE and no question is too stupid (here it comes again, something my dad tought me: There is only 1 stupid question, that is the question you were afraid to ask).

I've seen a lot of questions, and with most of them, I can relate that I had the same when I started (and like you, I didn't ask them...mainly because at that time I didn't even knew EVE had a forum).

Thanks, you're welcome.

Though that statement really depends on who you ask...Evil

Hmm, lots to think about here. I may take the time to put together a thread with links to all the guides that made me a better player instead of hosting a q and a here. Hopefully it will be a better nexus than blind stumbling after help.

As an incidental, the resources thread has some good links there, but is lacking many outside site links. Any idea why?

Simple. because they are outside sites, thus can't be moderated and verified by CCP. That's also the same reason why you get those link warnings when you click an "non CCP" or "CCP approved" link on the forum. Has everything to do with liability etc.

No offense, by any and all sites made by a player, are biased towards that player's perspective. Prime examples are all the "so called" news sites. They are all just biased propeganda media for the owner(s).

at what price point is it worth putting more expensive modules on a ship?

I have a Gila (about 360mil). is it a bad idea to put modules on the ship that are worth about the same? I have a mostly T2 fitting but I want to upgrade my drone damage amplifiers to ones from the LP store. the market value of three of these exceeds the price of my ship (120mil each) will doing this make me a gank magnet?

Likewise, what percentage resist is 'sufficient' for an omnitank? I am using 3 resist modules (2 to fill resist holes, one adaptive) this gives me about 75-80% resist to all damage types.

no but posting about it on the forums might,
Generally speaking its a good idea to keep the fitting under twice the cost of the hull, not a rule but something for you.

look into rigs for plugging holes, frees up slots for better thingsBlink

That's a pretty good tank, mate. Other than the rig suggestion, not much I could improve upon there. My Drake doesn't have much more than 65% resists on the low end, and I solo C2 wormhole sleeper sites with it.

As for the cost on gila mods, it all depends on what you do with it. If you just run missions and sites in high sec, and have the isk to spend on it, enjoy the little bit of extra DPS. But... People will happily sacrifice a few Tier 3 battle cruisers to suicide gank you over those. And with watch lists and locator agents, its not hard to spot a players pattern. So go for it if it brings you joy, but watch dscan for combat probes and don't be afraid to dock up if you see them. Just add it to your overview and scan often for close probes. Fly it proudly and with some paranoia.

That's a loaded question! We all have what we enjoy. And it all makes isk. If you like exploring, here's a guide I wrote about drone scavenging that you can use from a very early date in your career.

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=5088594#post5088594

Many others are there, but I'm probably not the best to ask about making money...

But I can damn sure help ya spend it!

thanks. I'll see if the shinys make a noticeable difference on my mission running.

I've noticed the probes from time to time on dscan, and docked up, as the one time I stuck around, I saw a bunch of blinky people warp in
