Orbital Mechanics

Greetings,

Perused the common threads and did not see this at first glance. This has had to have come up before, and I would like to see what the discussions were both for and against.

Will the planets, moons, stations and POSs ever start to actually orbit?

With the increasing fidelity of the in-space attributes, both visuals and mechanics, it seems like a logical progression.

Yes, old bookmarks would eventually take your ship to an empty grid as things move on. Pros? Cons? Anyone?

It seems to me that this feature would have at least some sort of tactical and strategic change to the game. Imagine instances and situations and discuss. For example... predictive BMs to use for an attack at a later date, when the structure in question will arrive. Third-party apps that can predict when an orbital will arrive at a specific place.

Use real math and orbital mechanics to determine orbital velocity around each object's primary. Inner worlds will whip around their stars, while the outer Gas Giants may take a few years to make a circuit. POSs, Stations and Outposts would be zipping merrily along as well, especially if in orbit around a moon. Lagrange points could be utilized to clamp down at least one variable in POS movement.

Overview warp-ins would have to remain valid. The CONCORD ephemeris would of course always be up to date. Your nav comp would always find the stations, planets and moons... and then warp you to the selected distance.

Corp/Alliance structures would be more ticklish, as you want to be able to warp to your POS without having to scan the thing down every week.

Just a thought that keeps cropping up....

You'd have to use those functions on every celestial, tower, and station in the game; even if it wouldn't be a large performance hit on the server, that might not be remotely feasible with the current codebase. People barely want to touch the POS code, so a change to how landmarks are fundamentally located is probably far out of the question.

This would be sooooo bad on many levels, besides the POS problems, BM's would be a mess, even if they kept the same location relative to the nearest planet, they will still move relative to everything else making hunting targets that much harder when bouncing from BM to BM.
