Hello fellow capsuleers,

first thing, I hope this is the right forum section.

Secondly, let's get to the main topic of my plea for help: I want to buy a second monitor. I dual box, and alt-tabbing is killing my thumb and index fingers.

Joke, I'm just lazy and I'd enjoy to not have to alt-tab.

BUT, before buying an expensive (for me) monitor, I'd like to ask you some advices.

I dual box using the same eve installation, and I'd want to have the clients open in a fixed window... On separate screens!

Is that possible?

Am I asking the impossible?

You have the answers.

Yes. I use a dual screen setup with one account on each monitor with no issues. Saves a lot of time (relatively speaking). Its really nice when youre playing on both sides of a fight... not that ill admit to doing that recently...

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

it is possible, the only problem is that eve will only remember one clients settings (with respect to monitor) and you are going to have to switch one client to the other monitor every time.

I'm clearly missing something. Thought duel boxing meant 2 Computers, 2 Monitors, 2 KB and 2 Mouses. Like I've done.

Doesn't sound to me what you are describing here???

If I dualbox (which I no longer can due to the unfortunate demise of my desktop), I open EVE in screenmode twice. Then drag one of them to the second monitor. Then make both fullscreen.

Generaly when people talk about dual/multi-boxing they are talking about using multiple clients on the same computer. Not always the case though.

It is absolutely possible. It will be easier to play in windowed mode though.

It is far easier to make a second copy of the EvE folder on your hard drive and run one account off of each folder. This way your different settings for each account will remain, including the monitor assignment. Not only that, but my clients seem to run smoother since each account has its own install.

There's a way round this Smile

Eve uses where the client was started from, to determine where to find and store settings.

So if you junction your client, you can use a shortcut to eve within that junction, and it'll have a whole new set of settings. You'll need to be careful that you start the launcher, wait for it to patch up, then start the other copy. (as they're actually the same files. patch one, and you patch the other.)

Dual or even multi-boxing is possible with just the one client install. Some people prefer to keep seperate directories for their accounts so they can have separate settings files, but it's not mandatory. I've run all 7 of my accounts from a single install with nary a hiccup, although the frame rate can take quite a hit.

However do be aware that multi-boxing makes you a target. And PvP while dual or multi-boxing is exponentially harder (not easier) than single boxing. While it can be done with experience (like the time I flew my cloaked rapier right into the middle of a SONE (Soldiers of New Eden) logi blob, warped my hictor to them and bubbled them, while at the same time applying DPS with the rest of my fleet AND flying a logi...) it takes a LOT of experience and a LOT of luck. Usually you just end up losing twice as many ships, unless you're really good or ganging up on rookie ships/haulers.

And yes, we killed all their logi which enabled INK to destroy their fleet. Good times - this was about a couple years ago. Wave to anyone who was there...

I have a desktop monitor and a laptop.

Take said monitor, and get a 15prong/HDMI cable.

15prong screws into the desktop monitor

HDMI plugs into the laptop.

If you're using a desktop initially, I can't help you lol

I triple box with 3 screens. All mine are in windowed mode, and it all works great.

Anyway, for future readers: I have an AMD graphic card. Eve let's me choose which screen use for windowed full screen, seeing each video exit as a graphic card per se. Sort of.

I want scratch marks now :(

I also playing in dual boxing mode on two screens. As Altirius Saldiaro said, the windowed mode works without any hassle and allows you to browse dotlan on an external browser.
Once you'll try it you'll never go back, even for any other computing acitivity. Bear

Do as Fuzzy Steve said. I recently bought new monitor which have higher resolution than my 2 other displays so settings for different accounts got more messy. I used junctions to trick Eve into thinking there are 2 copies installed and now whichever account I log in as 'main' it goes to new display and 'alt' accounts go to second with correct settings.

I also started to use Eve-O preview (3rd party player made tool) to switch between 'alt' clients.

I just leave mine in maximized window mode so I can still see the taskbar on bottom, and when I want to switch clients, I just click on the appropriate client on the taskbar because they're labeled. Even works wonderfully with the way they changed the sounds so only the client on top will play sounds.

You can duel box in fixed windows with dual monitors but it's also possible to run two clients on one monitor and run in fixed windows which requires no alt tabbing at all. Just click on the taskbar and then the second window.
