What finished features regarding player ship customization end up looking like is a game design question that's out of my area, but (as that Fanfest presentation indicated) the engineering to allow it to happen is certainly in progress.

This makes me happy.

So 80's, so wrong, so eye gouging infuriating for those that see it.....Twisted

On a serious note, it's good to hear the work is progressing!

Yeah. It's more useful/seen than shoes for you character at least. I'd probably play with it just to see what I could create. And replace the ugly camouflage skins. Unless it costs more than 10mil. Then I don't care about it, and would rather buy more ammo or something.

Hopefully when this skinning stuff gets sorted out, our corp logos will be put on to our ships too.

I'm an EVE player too, and I too care about gameplay changes. That said, our graphics developers are graphics developers, and our gameplay developers are gameplay developers. I can say with certainty that none of the infrastructure work going on for these features have any impact on gameplay advances.

Sandals are good, because feet are sexy. Not hairy-toed man-feet, mind you, but I certainly don't expect to see such things from your creative designs. Big smile

What do you think of a customizable Clothing painter. You buy the patterns from the nex store, but can colour them how you like in the Character screen?

I think the way CCP is doing it right now is not bad. It lets them gauge long term demand for destructible customization (you get killed you lose it.. unlike character customization).

Pink one has CCP Punkturis's name all over it.

I'd be happy if in the meantime they'd just release all those corp skins they've had since at least Fanfest 2012 P

Though I'm dubious as to whether 'demand for destructible customization paid for with real money' is going to pan out well for them.

Well, they'd have to create slots in the overview and other data base entries for each and every skin.... very, very messy.

And why on earth would you pay real money for any of this, unless you just have an overwhelming desire to do so? Real money payment is completely unnecessary for items offered through the NES. Buy a PLEX with ISK and convert it to AUR.

Real money payment is merely a convenient option, not a necessity.

Meh, I don't see it as all that messy. They're not new models, they're not 'faction' ships with special beefed up stats to be balanced, they're ordinary T1 hulls with a name change and color pallet swap.

Either way CCP is still getting paid real money for the items, regardless of whether the person who paid the real money is the one who bought them.

Anyway, the issue I see is that if people are going to pay real money, or spend the time and effort to get the ISK to purchase a PLEX, for a cosmetic item, they generally want to keep that cosmetic item for a good long while. And not only is the way EVE is structured in general not conducive to that, they're actually more likely to lose said ship due to the fact that rare/expensive ships, especially ones with no special stats, make for more tempting targets.

Corporate ship skins are an obvious example, as it seems like they should have been a blindingly obvious addition to Corporate LP stores, but CCP decided instead to see if they could milk people for real money for them. And even that has been poorly implemented, two years after they show off the skins and they've released what, a grand total of 2 corp skins per faction and only for three specific ships for those factions?

1: My overview is already long enough, thank you very much. Smile
I'd rather not have to have a separate overview entry for each different ship skin for each ship, which is what we have now.
So in short, not going to happen. Not with the current mechanic in place anyway.

2: People spend money on PLEX, for a variety of purposes, already. Granting one more option (turning it into AUR) is only natural, and enables you to pay for cosmetic stuff with either ISK or cash. You never have to pay a dime for the skin yourself unless you want to. That's the whole point.

Now I'll grant you, I'd like to see the price drop on pre-existing ship skins even more (they are already significantly cheaper than we thought they'd be) if they are going to stay destructible (which they absolutely should). Clothing items should be dirt cheap and destructible as well.

Nothing should be permanent in EVE except your Avatar and a basic set of threads.

The whole point of developing these cosmetic extra's was to provide an additional revenue stream for CCP that is completely voluntary. You don't pay anything (ISK or cash) unless you feel like a little bling. Which is more than fair.

I'd much rather have that then eventually be faced with the price of subscriptions going up for everyone... and eventually that WILL happen. I personally can't name one other product or service out there that has remained the same price for 11 years.

By the way, they've already said they will be releasing more faction skins through the loyalty stores, and other means as well. So I'm pretty confident we'll be seeing faction skins through a variety of sources AND see a mechanic introduced for completely custom skins (that keeps the TTP at bay). But you'll end up paying for them in either time, ISK, or cash... just like everything else in game.

They are, unless worn.

Making things dirt cheap removes their perceived value completely
and no one will buy it anymore. People nowhere pay money for vanity items that are too cheap,
unless they are cheap themselves. Or little kids.

CCP knows that giving **** away for dirt cheap makes it exactly that: Dirt.

No one buys dirt.

Yes, that's how it works.

Clothes cost more than spaceships, that's pretty dumb. CCP took a bit of a dump on immersion in favor of profit on that one. NES store products make no sense in the game world.

On the other hand, having them super cheap and destructible wouldn't really work well either. Since we are nude in our capsules, they still wouldn't get destroyed once worn. You could say we carry our clothes around in a compartment in our capsules, so that's why they would get destroyed. But then what happens to our portrait when we get podded? Server has to update it to one with generic clothes? The portrait is the main reason people buy that junk I would guess. Since CQ is a useless lonely place.

Maybe we are actually paying for a license to an infinite, lifetime supply of a clothing item that is generated at any station we want, on-command. Hard to imagine the clothing companies could stay in business on a business model like that. Cramming micro transactions into an old monthly sub game sure does get a bit tricky huh?

I'd like ship skins to be an NPC station service and ISK sink. Probably gonna be micro-transaction stuff for the NES though. Doesn't bode well for market ISK price.
