I've heard CCP has the tooling for this already and yet they are messing with pre-painted ship designs you have to build. This is something they could implement into the eve store and use it sort of like current character rescuplting. Is this feasible or are there technology barriers?

I think the way CCP is doing it right now is not bad. It lets them gauge long term demand for destructible customization (you get killed you lose it.. unlike character customization).

Pink one has CCP Punkturis's name all over it.

They way I pictured it is you pay to get your already manufactured ship painted. When you loose your ship you have to repaint it for the same cost. I could see different base costs for each class and extra costs for special Add-ons. Sort of what they have except it's not done through bpcs and it is much more customizable.

Yes there is a tool they are working on that would allow a player to come up with custom paint jobs (as opposed to pre-existing paint schemes for NPC corps), however while it is technically possible it is far from being simple enough for someone who isn't experienced in Graphic design to use.

Once that hurdle is overcome, then comes the work of designing a practical and robust interface for it that will actually work within the game.

That's a lot of work and a lot of testing before we'll ever see it.

Oh, and there should be a dev blog coming out soon I believe that might be relevant. It will discuss the new Space Object Factory (or something like that, I'm so feeble minded lately) which may be part of the groundwork for this to happen.

Thanks for the input. Good news that they are at least working it.

Last I heard, ship painting is currently in the "experimental" phase of development. I think they are still trying to rework some legacy code to allow for easier ship painting (rather than the current method of creating an entirely unique database entry for each type of paint job).

edit: the pic you posted OP is a concept design made by a player.

Yeah that is something T'Amber created and it isn't actually a tool already made. Purely concept art. Those pics have been circulating for a bit now.

There was a short section at Fanfest this year showing some of the results, but it was clearly explained that the UI around what they showed was fairly complicated, so it's still a way off, but something CCP want to provide.

I would literally just fly around all day in bright Orange ships...Lol

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that since SWG has customizable paint jobs for swoops/ground cars circa 2003/2004 and E&B had them for ships...and everyone else saw your paintjob...I'm just not going to buy the "wow this is complicated or would be a significant resource hit on people's rigs" argument.

If CCP wants to say "meh, we just don't feel like it" that's one thing. Saying "oh boy this is hard" is something else entirely.

It would still be a cool feature, even if we could only see our own custom skins at first and work out how to see other player's down the road.

Oh, and please don't let Fozzie anywhere near this...

Your thread title reminded me of an Item Commodity that use to be in game called "Device".

Item Description :

I searched Evelopedia's Item Database but couldn't find it. Guess it's probably no longer active in game.

Sad

It's not hard to do in principle, but when you have a large, complex system that's designed to work a different way, engineering such a feature requires proceeding deliberately and taking great care not to break anything.

What finished features regarding player ship customization end up looking like is a game design question that's out of my area, but (as that Fanfest presentation indicated) the engineering to allow it to happen is certainly in progress.

Darwin,

I am completely in favor of not breaking things :) Take your time.

Just a personal opinion here. There are a lot of game play mechanics and re-balancing to be done for the game. At Fanfest reworking Recons was mentioned, for example. As a covops/recon pilot I got very excited. The Pilgrim was specifically mentioned, and it does indeed need work.

So, tbh I get kinda angry when I see stuff like this. IDGAF about eye candy. Even if it were free I wouldnt bother painting my ships, especially my half-assed Pilgrim that didnt get rebalanced yet...but oh boy I can make it a dfferent color Twisted

Now some yahoo players is gonna come in here and say that it's different people workign on the ship painting, the art department. Well theyre part of it of course, but as the Dev post here demonstrated, theres a lot of coding going in to it as well.

tl;dr
Ship rebalancing > fookin paint jobs on our ships.
teh ssabat does not approve.

Thanks. I would not be surprised to see more information released about how this work is going fairly soon.

I'm an EVE player too, and I too care about gameplay changes. That said, our graphics developers are graphics developers, and our gameplay developers are gameplay developers. I can say with certainty that none of the infrastructure work going on for these features have any impact on gameplay advances.

Considering that EvE has the best character creator I've ever seen, just to make something you rarely see...

...and yet, we see our ships in a closer fashion as we see our characters in other games...

To have anything less than cosmetic customization found in Armored Core For Answer would be an absolute let down.
