So my toon is 3 years old, but I've only been active for about 8-9 months of that time, and even then not all at once. I want to get back to the game but I never was able to figure out what I wanted to do other than shoot people.

My main questions are:

1) What class of ship should I be looking at for small group PVP? BC/BS/strategic cruisers etc.?
2) What is a good way to make ISK considering I don't enjoy mining, industry, or PI? Is missioning pretty much it, or can exploring/salvaging be lucrative too?

I have 16mil SP but they're all spread out (offensively I have skills in projectile weapons and lots of missiles). I can fly Min BS or Tengu, but don't have the skills to do either very well. I was going for Tengu for missions, had a terrible time at it so went Min BS but sucked at that too. I heard that missiles sort of got nerfed in the recent patch so I'm wondering if Tengu is still good for L4's.

Can someone give me some pointers on how to focus my skill plan so that I can
a] make ISK somehow (and what ships should I be doing that in) and
b] use those skills to transition to pvp?

If suggest starting with frigates to relearn some pvp, and then move up to cruisers.
Exploration is good, if you don't get angry at popping sites. I do anomalies, which is good isk (I live in null though), drone boats appear to be best. Salvaging is alright for a noob but I don't recommend it if you've gone beyond t1 frigates and don't have SRP.
With anomalies, your skills are all combat or support (except spaceship command), so it transitions perfectly into pvp.

For PvP ships:

It depends on who you fly with, what your targets are and where you fly. It ranges from frigates up to BS...
Personally, I would suggest to start flying with frigates, as initially it will be less of a drain on your wallet.

For ISK making:

Missions
Trading
Scamming
FW (PvP / PvE mixed LP income)
Selling the odd PLEX to fill wallet again.

If you do security missions, the general skills needed for those are also needed in PvP (tank skills, core skills, offensive skills).

For solo pvp a lot of different hull class' can work, it all depends on playstyle, a dual rep incursus is a surprisingly good pvp frigate but then a dual/triple rep Hyperion is an absolute god at gatecamping. If you're looking for practice to get back into it, i recommend faction warfare, it lets you fight on a reasonably level playing field, you have the option of flying with fleets and you can even make isk for yourself through LP. Cheap T1 fits work for FW and it lets you progress to T2 for that edge, FW lets you determine the hull size you fly and fight against, with the option to progress upwards with different plex sizes. I don't recommend the Tengu just yet, T3s require decent experience, fitting knowledge and pilot skill to be really effective.

PI is 5-10 millions / day passive income for really low time (you can manage your colonies during travel time ) invested.

If I had to guess I'd say the reason you had a bad time in your tengu and battleship would be because your support skills suck,
I'm not having a go at you, my support skills sucked then as well, my advice would be to train a Cerberus (if you can't already sit in one) it's a fraction of the price of a tengu so you can learn to PvP in it (or even the coracle, it's t1 version) as you will lose a couple of them before you find your feet and a tengu loss could break your heart and/or wallet.

We had some trouble a while back with a guy flying a nano Cerberus/tengu ,he got coky though and we cought him in an orthrus (and nailed it to the front of our ceo's sacrilegePirate)

Yeah, good ships if you know how to fly them.

Missions are ok isk, reliable if boring.

Good stuff guys, keep it coming.

General consensus seems to be to start back with frigs. I like the idea of that because, honestly, the most fun I've had in this game was in a Rifter.

When it comes to making ISK, FW looks like a viable option according to a couple of you. I've never done FW, but doing that and security missions sounds fun since I like to shoot things for money Lol

Would you guys recommend focusing on missile boats or projectiles? I have skills in both. Is it still the general rule that missles = PVE and projectiles = PVP? Anyone care to give a recommendation on what ships to progress thru for frig-->cruiser-->BC-->BS?

Missiles and drones are not a bad choice, I would focus on those first.

Drones are very effective for both PVE and PVP and are the dominant weapons platform at the moment.
Missiles as well are quite effective at PVE all around, while being effective in PVP at the lower ship tiers especially if you like speed.

You will find the bigger ship you get, the less viable missiles become for PVP, to the point where you will likely be fitting RLML (rapid light missile launchers) on your cruisers over the standard Heavy/Heavy Assault missiles. That is not set in stone of course, especially when it comes to Amarrian missile boats, but is an ever emerging pattern none the less.

Hey guys.

I like this fit a lot. My DPS on paper sucks with my skills, but with all lvl 5 skills it seems to be quite good. Can you explain one thing to me though?

Why a DLA for sentry drones? I thought with sentries you just plop them down where you're sitting?

Cause your drones will shoot only as far as your drone control range. To get them fire at MJD range (about 100 km) you need 2 DLA or 1 DLA and one drone rig.

Ah. So what's the tactic with a MJD and sentries? Warp in, drop sentries, pull aggro and MJD towards/away from rats and gates? How do you go about picking the sentries up before going to the next room?

Since many missions will drop you too close to NPC, sniper fitted sentry drone boat often jump first, shoot later.

So my mission routine is usually looks like this:

Drop mobile tractor unit.
Align to the right direction to jump.
Hit MJD.
Bookmark tractor unit location.
Jump.
Stop the ship (important).
Launch sentry drones.
Pop rats.
Jump back to tractor or to the gate.
