Shield Compensation Skills

Greetings!

I've recently begun playing this game and I have a qeustion regarding Shield Compensation Skills.

I've read they are only useful for passive shield modules, and I have also read people do not tend to use those modules very often.

So my qeustion: is it worth training Shield Compensation Skills? :) I wouldn't want to waste my valuable training time on skills I will not use.

Thanks in advance!

Shield compensation skills only affect "passive shield modules" that affect resistances (i.e. resistance modules that do not require activation or capacitor power).

If you want to do a lot of PvE it might worth training them a little bit... but generally the shield hardeners (i.e. active resistance modules that include the Invulnerability Field) will be your go-to modules of choice... and they are not affected by the shield compensation skills.

Armor is almost exactly the opposite.

Adding to the above; the only reason anyone would ever use passive shield resists is if he does lvl 5 missions (almost no one) or when fitting resists to (T2) frigates, because of the cap use of active hardeners. Other than that it just doesn't happen so you can just ignore the shield compensation skills, if you're not feeling at ease about it get them to lvl 3 at some point.

For armour it's different but only really for pvp because armour Omni resist passive (comparable to the shield invul field, which is an active).

TL;DR there's much better skills to train up for you right now, just ignore them.

Thank you for the swift replies!

So this is how i understand things: Armor Compensations are worth it, Shields are not. Unless in the rare case I want to use those niche modules.

Does this sum it up?

Yes.

Armor Compensation skills boost the popular Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II (and similar modules). These are widely considered one of the best PVP armor tank module classes, and decent enough in PVE.

The shield modules that are boosted by shield compensation skills are used ONLY in a very specific type of tank, one that is used against heavy, heavy energy neutralizing (passive, 0 capacitor tanks). These are very popular in solo level 5 mission fits, and almost never used for anything else.

TLDR: Maybe at some point. Don't make it a priority.

I train them for barge/Exhumers and Rattlesnakes. Barges because every little bit of buffer makes a gank less likely to succeed and Rattlesnakes because they can have a huge omni-resist tank with an outstanding passive regen (Or at least they used to. Been a while, tbo).

Other than those I tend to fly armor ships. Active shield ships are just too restrictive for fitting compared to active armor ships.

this, this is why I trained them you can still have a crazy omni-resist tank with a rattlesnake (for L4 missions), no worries about switching hardners.

How are you going to have an Omni tank where the compensation skills are useful, when your shield Omni resist is an active module. That makes zero sense.

Omni resist module =/= Omni tank

Omni tank = as equal as possible resist, as high as possible.

Which can be easily achieved by using passive resist modules in the correct amount and types to create an omnitank.

Yes but there is NO REASON to use passive shield resists on a Rattlenake for a lvl 4 mission.

sure there is.

I didn't want to have to switch resists between missions.

It may not be *optimal* but I no longer have any concern for what mission I'm doing.

^^ Passive modules are handy for filling out any resist holes, I tend to do the same on certain ships.

It's not necessary but I'm lazy like that.

OP you don't need to train them, but they may come in handy sometime in the future. I trained them when they did have an effect on active modules.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Not true. I use an XL ASB on my Rattle as I use nearly all my slots for gank/projection; 3 slots for tank, none for cap. This means I have very limited capacitor with the XL ASB; using active shield modules would eat up more capacitor relative to overall tank gained, so I am in fact better off with the amplifier modules and ability to run the XL ASB for longer.

Also, CPU.

Hey guys.

I'm thinking about doing them to 5 so I can have the shiny gold icon on the mastery tab.

other than that meh, I mean maybe do EM for some frig fits, and/or thermal. I was going to do kinetic for solo lv5 missions in an ishtar but that is a very specific investment in SP that you can feel free to worry about much much later.
