As an aside, this forum is visited and posted on by EvE players from around the globe. Talking about certain topics in general is ok, but gearing it down to one nation only and judging everything that is happening (globally) from that point is not. The reason being: virtually always it leads to discussing (international) politics. And that is prohibited on this forum.

Having said that, I have removed a rule breaking post and those quoting it.

Sufferers of anti-social personality disorder abound in the world today, especially within the so-called "West" and most especially in the U.K., Australia and the U.S. In internet venues one cannot readily distinguish if one such sufferer is actively engaged in an interchange, or not.

One reason this is, the adolescent-male "tough guy" syndrome, as well as other emotional development dysfunctions making things like empathy and sympathy appear to be forms of weakness to these people can be mistaken for the symptoms of what is commonly called "sociopathy." (Much of this is learned, or acquired behavior, usually taught by adults entrusted with the development and education of young children - largely parents. Whereas anti-social personality disorder can be said to be "inflicted.")

The fact is with us, and (should go without saying) not only are we knee-deep in it here at EVE Online, the management actually encourages people suffering from these conditions as a method to extend interest and popularity in this game. (One of the few stated reasons from CCP is, such behavior destroys ships and stimulates manufacturing and market activity.) For the volatility of the activity being fostered, the reasons for fostering it are not only thin, but smack of a level of inconsideration that in and of itself is cause enough for alarm.

Given this fact, to expect any empathy or sympathy of any proportion here in the EVE Online forum is laughable, if not a pathetic exercise in futility. As you can see by the first response to the OP - "kum ba ya"? Kum ba ya means "come by here." Why do these afflicted people love to use this as their signal to one another? Why is it such an irritation to them? The mere thought of a gathering of empathetic and sympathetic people in harmony and union with one another triggers the symptoms of their disorder, and literally causes physical reactions. The "tough guy" component forces them to ridicule the source. And, of course, the embarrassment forces them to cloak it in a "logical" and "rational - manly" justification. (They'll even feel obliged to pretend they understood this paragraph, if they could muster the patience to read it.)

The idea of getting a consensus, or management cooperation in such a situation is a modern, laughable lost cause. As you can see in the linked article, the parts of the industry that did move, moved only to shield themselves. There is no responsible, across the board call to take a closer look at this as a mental health issue. What's so interesting about the "West" and its afflicted areas is, if it is making money (and not breaking the law) it doesn't require scrutiny.

You can safely say EVE Online is the sandbox where sociopaths can virtually express themselves without fear of restriction or retribution. CCP plays the role of confining their players' appetites for expansive, unconfined destruction and dissolution with a pride that beggars the imagination and makes one wonder if they've ever been introduced to civilized behavior on any level. Former workers at that corporation express that they leave with the same thought in mind.

Maybe it's true. After all, sociopaths are people, too. They need recreation and a place to have their fun just like anyone else. Maybe it's a good thing it's confined to this game, if that can be said to be true. Though, there is no question of their strong presence here, and they've made that presence known publicly in this venue on many occasions. No. This is a "buyer beware" situation here. Realize where you are, and whom you are among - top to bottom. And, don't let anything slip. Will that make you safe? Probably not. The only surety you have is they don't really know where you are.

Paradise is like where you are right now, only much, much better.

Being a sociopath is not something that is "inflicted" on you, just so you're aware.

I've been fully aware of my own status in that regard since I was about four or five years old, before I even had a name for it. One finds oneself frequently watching and observing real people in order to figure out how to act like them, it's rather interesting.

Now, an actual personality disorder? No idea. That may very well be an acquired behavior.

But talking about it like people are mentally incompetent for deriding the preachy, huggy groupthink that surrounds political correctness? That's just out of line.

Adding to the topic at hand, i will have little tolerance for people like Anita Sarkeesian who´s probably the biggest example of people being disrespectful and outright vicious. But my intolerance of her comes from her methods and means, rather than her as a person.

Also i do not condone the use of death threats etc against anyone, i prefer a strong valid argument over threats and insults.

So what´s my beef with Anita Sarkeesian in why i can´t tolerate her. She´s ignorant, she claims to be an academic yet she upholds on academic standards what so ever in her videos. She claims to be an avid gamer when source after source that she´s actually stolen material from prominent and non-prominent gaming channels.

Furthermore my disagreements goes further than that with her, she doesn´t provide evidence other than that which supports her own pre-determined claims, aswell as her avoiding the public debate when she knows it´s a very sensitive issue.

But this does not warrant death threats, insults etc against her as a person or her family, such actions are unwarranted.

It´s a sad state in out gaming community theese days however, if you look at most prominent youtuber profiles like TB, Jesse cox, pewdiepie (i don´t like him myself) etc, they get to withstand massive amount of dislike and insults. Some of it warranted, but most of it isn´t.

To consider what gaming started as, a past time that was scorned and not accepted at all, to where it´s mainstream and to some extent we have about the worst kinds of fans. Granted the group of fans that insult and threatened is an extreme minority, but it´s an extreme minority that sadly sets the standard for what others think of us as gamers.

It´s a sad state, but it´s unfortunatley also true, tolerance is important, but we should also be critical to what people say and do and not just swallow everything that everyone say.

It's easy to not care about racial slurs and bigotry in games when you are a straight white male. You will find most people who hold such opinions are indeed just that. It's then no coincidence that people who are either not white, not male, or not straight almost unanimously get offended.

Seriously... show me the black guy or the gay guy who think it's cool to use racial or anti-gay slurs in video games.
Or anywhere.

I would not call this thin skin. In our society - and for many decades now - the vast majority of people find that kind of speech unacceptable. You will be fired from jobs and kicked out of schools if you are caught speaking this way.

The people who defend and/or use bigotry - despite perhaps not being actual bigots themselves - are just unusually thick skinned. They are in fact the "abnormal" ones. Kudos, I wish I could be like that. Life would be more fun if I never got offended. Alas, I'm normal. Blink

The worst part about it is that CCP gets a rather skewed view of the issues at hand. Take a look at Lugia's post on page 1 and you will see 9 likes already, more than the OP or those agreeing with him. I reckon CCP take these sorts of occurrences as evidence that the community at large has no real issue with such behavior.
Couldn't be further from the truth as far as my experience goes. I've lived in various parts of highsec; both carebearing and ganking. I roam with people in low-sec, and I've even lived in a WH with a small coalition before. In this time I have gotten to know several dozen players well, from the lamest of carebears to New Order agents to elite lowsec PVPers to wormhole hunters. I would be surprised if even 10% of these players supported posts like Lugias which are effectively defending bigotry within EVE Online.

Why there is such a discrepancy on these forums in regards to certain personality types being dominant is somewhat beyond me, I have theories but mostly just out of my butt. What I am rather sure of though - not a fact, but quite sure - is that if the entire EVE community voted on this thread, we'd be seeing significantly more support for the anti-bigotry side than the "HTFU and accept hate speech" side.

Lastly... quite amusing to see the number of Goons that defend themselves in threads like this. Guilty conscience catching up? P

whoa.

the amazing part of all this? 4chan and reddit might actually come out as heroes of all this mess (search for Vivian James on ED)

The "girl gamer" mascot that the male community of 4chan "created" and then proceed to make naked versions of?

Well... they not be perfectP All you need is someone claiming rule 34.

it did started innocently and with a purpose tho, however thinking that somebody would not come up with nude versions of a game character, even moreso one that came out of the... amorph mass that is 4chan, is just wishful thinking.

There is no credit to be had what so ever for a male community to make a stereotypical "girl gamer mascot" It just makes girls look like some abnormality. Like if they made an "African American gamer mascot" and then threw in a bone through the nose and a bucket of fried chicken to show that they "get" the group they try to make a representation of.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

You know, the most intolerant people on the Internet seem to be those that always preach about tolerance. It's generally because they are confused as to what "tolerance" really is, thinking it means no one ever says a mean thing or gives you the stink eye, and everyone always celebrates whatever you think makes you a special snowflake. This attitude, of course, is incompatible with actual tolerance, which is why the original word must be maimed to conform with IngSoc.

It's called "repressive tolerance."

The real problem is over-exaggeration of the issue of 'intolerance', which is not exclusive to the gaming community. This petition is a sham because all it is is developers/journalists paying lip service to the gamers they just spent a month insulting.

This is very much related to the 'Quincident' that occurred, and I, for one, reject its sincerity on every level.

The problem with the 'SJW' crowd is they blow little things so far out of proportion that the real issues faced by some, if not many of us right here in this game that we have to face on a daily basis, and do so with little to no complaint. I've had more than a few people think I must be some kind of criminal because I'm autistic, and refused to hire me. I was left by a woman I loved dearly because when things started to get serious, she became afraid of having autistic children. This one has severely affected my ability to get close to anyone. I may end up living the rest of my life alone as a result.

My autism has had very real life-changing effects for me, and while the above might sound like complaining, and while I do wish my life had gone better, I still do what I can to move past it and improve my life. I can't work directly with other people, and as a result I'm virtually unemployable and on disability but, I finished a masters degree in journalism, and wound up writing freelance for a few of those 'ezines' that have been blowing smoke up our arses. I recently had the privilege of telling one of their editors he could shove the 'story' he wanted me to write up his arse, and I wouldn't be whoring for his gaming tabloid anymore. I should have stuck to science journalism.

At the end of the day though, I still struggle against many a public misconception about autism, so I get a little bent outta shape when people on the internet start calling other people 'autistic' in particular. While I know I can't stop them, I do feel the need to criticise it. "Did you just do that? You must be autistic" sounds like "only an autistic person could be that stupid".

And then I get called an "SJW", pejoratively, because I'm supposed to know it's 'just a word' and I'm probably 'just a Tumblr-autist on a crusade against free speech'. I get made to feel guilty for saying, hey, not cool man, people aren't autistic by virtue of being stupid, can't you just call him stupid? I know from some perspectives it would look that way, that I'm out to control what you can and can't use words for, but I'm not, I just wish I could communicate my own perspective better, but I don't know how. Anyway, for me, it's kinda like how a gay guy would feel when you call something gay by virtue of something being wrong with it, which amounts to something being wrong with being gay.

I was actually diagnosed when I was 13, by a Tony Attwood. Other actual autistic people around here might know who he is. When I was diagnosed, he wasn't a world leader just yet. I know this much though, I've never even looked at Tumblr.

Anyway, I'm off on a rant here, but my point is, there is an SJW crowd out there without a leg to stand on, and by acting the way they do, they turn people against anyone speaking out against legitimate concerns of social misunderstandings and misattributions. And they do use REAL censorship, they don't just ask nicely if you could use a different word that you're misattributing, they get your Twitter accounts banned and write horrible things about you. What they don't realise is that by silencing their critics, they're not achieving a victory over anyone, they're actually just revealing how afraid they are of what their critics have to say. I do firmly believe in freedom of speech, whether I'm telling someone off for using a word I don't like or not, and that right includes the right to criticise.

Anyway, I read this petition the other day, and I was legitimately disappointed to see CCP names on it, but then I realised they were American CCP employees and they've probably been sacked anyway so, not concerned about CCP's involvement in all this.

I think it's fair to say that remy pretty much killed the issue here.
