CCP rakes in millions and millions a year, yet they can't defend a ddos attack.

You don't fully understand how the internet works, do you?

It was a limited DDoS at that. The exefile in the /bin folder still got a connection.

What about ship losses due to ddos attack ? Are they will be reimbursed?

Umm nope there is no reimbursement as it is outside CCP control.

If you want reimbursement go to the DDos hackers and ask the for your reimbursement for the lost ships Big smile

Boy I'm sure glad you cleared that up!

I instead challenge you to provide a method or an example of one that was able to stop one.

There are several companies that provide DDoS protection, just do a Google search 'DDoS Protection'. One such company is VeriSign, a well known international company.

As far as what one can do in the event of a DDoS attack, you can also try Google and Wikipedia, The info below is a c&p of a small section of that page from Wikipedia. You'll need to go to Wikipedia for more detailed information.

"Handling
Defensive responses to denial-of-service attacks typically involves the use of a combination of attack detection, traffic classification and response tools, aiming to block traffic that they identify as illegitimate and allow traffic that they identify as legitimate"

Companies can also buy insurance against such attacks.

DDoS is nothing new, it is quite old school really, and there's lots of information on the net about it, how to prevent it, and how to stop it.

Yeah, you can call +1-703-763-4544 for a fast response in UK from VeriSign or spend between 120,000 up to 8 million dollars on some hardware from Arbor, depending on how much you want to spend, how much you have and how important is your internet business.

Old school but, still, effective against some, I guess.

This is basically what happens during a DDoS attack, for the ones who simply don't get it.

After reading your posts, one could be forgiven for suspecting you of being the script kiddie responsible for the attacks, attempting to use ideology to justify them but knowing deep down that you just want some attention. Whether that's true or not, people pay money to play this game not because they don't have a choice, not because the company makes them, but because they want to. Whether someone is trying to send an ideological message or just make CCP look bad, the question of whether or not they should be able to defend against a DDOS is irrelevant next to the more pertinent question of what sort of shitstain makes an attack against gamers like this in the first place?

I think CCP handed this one in record time compared to the ones around 14 months ago, around the time Odyssey launched. They dealt with some DDoSholes back then, too. Business and game went on as normal after that. It will go on as normal after this as well.

I find it amusing that it takes DDoS attacks to bring this game offline, when I know plenty of MMORPGs out there that crash and have to be reset on their own due to faults in their code. CCP is pretty damn good about keeping that sort of thing away from their game and us, their customers.

Laughing at the guys who were calling DDoS "an old school trick" or saying that it can be easily circumvented.

There's a reason stuff like that is still around. It works.

You know, I have to wonder who's pulling on your chain. You seem really eager to support those attacking this company and this game, and really eager to attack those of us who are still loyal to a form of entertainment we enjoy. Jealous of us much?

for people who want to learn the details about DDoS attacks go here http://www.incapsula.com/ddos/ddos-attacks/

CCP should read it too, it has some clues on how to prevent most of them

DoS is oldschool. DDoS is newer. the thing that most people don't realize, is that DDoS is a blanket term for a type of attack. the actual mechanics of the attack evolve constantly whenever an amplification exploit is discovered.

Oh well, guess nobody wanted to play Eve today anyways...

Going to write a letter about how my credit card companies website got ddos'd so I can't pay sub fee this month.

But I'm sure since CCP can't deliver the product I pay for due to ddos, they will certainly understand when they don't get their payment for the same reason, so I should be good...right?

Yup, I'm sure they will understand.

Soo......

...

Can...

Can I have your stuff?

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?
