EVE-Dust Link?

How long is CCP going to leave it until we have something to use in-game to rent NPC armies to attack our enemies' installations? Shouldn't this be implemented early in order for bugs to be ironed out before DUST is released on consoles?

Dust will start its beta this winter, so there's plenty of time to figure things out. The actual game launches next summer.

That's a little over 6 months. It will take a substantial portion of that time to simply iron out kinks in the EVE-side UI for contracting mercs, much less sorting out issues of giving humans time to pick up planet-side blowing-things-up contracts. While EVE players are familiar with the "play around the bugs" side of things, will console gamers be this forgiving?

Look how long it's taking CCP to get the NeX up to speed: that is basically a rehashed LP store. Some may find my lack of faith disturbing. I consider it earned.

This guy has several amazing ideas involving PI, and some include bombardment without the use of Dust players, (despite my excitement and support behind the game).

As CCP have stated, Dust is designed to survive without EvE and vice versa, so if they want PI infrastructure to be destroyed via an EvE mechanic, separate from Dust, it makes no sense to not implement the Dread-crushing-pins Soon(TM)er than later, unless they want Dust interaction to be head of the pack before we get used to a quicker, smash-everything approach.

Can't wait to dual box my Dust toon and EVE toon on the same machine!

From the latest Dust blog you can see that Eve and Dust will connect through Eve Gate (and not the Eve client). These new forums are the first part of the new UI being tested already:

"EVE Gate will be the communal hub for EVE pilots and DUST soldiers. This is where players from both games can manage their contacts, check in-game mail (when not actually in-game), post on forums, check their calendar for upcoming events or post new events of their own to the calendar. We’ll be adding functionality to EVE Gate over time. Some of it will be DUST-specific, like battle heatmaps, but most of it will be shared across EVE Online and DUST 514. EVE Gate is, after all, for all of the EVE setting."

... "We are working hard on making EVE corporations completely seamless between EVE and DUST 514. ... Common functionality includes creating corporations, managing membership, managing finances, and joining alliances. For some of these functionalities, we will be providing a native UI on the console client, while others that are deemed to be less immediately critical will be available on EVE Gate to start with. Currently, the biggest limitation will be inventories, as EVE items don’t really have any functions on the DUST client and reciprocally, but this is something that might change in the future when we will observe even more convergence between EVE and DUST.

VOICE / TEXT CHAT

Using voice chat, DUST and EVE players will be able to communicate with one another in realtime.

Text chat is of course supported too. The PS3 supports standard USB and Bluetooth keyboards right out of the box and so we don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect that players will grab their PC’s keyboard for use in DUST 514."

Its even closer than just sharing EvE gate forums. From what has been written about DUST so far it seems that ...

* DUST players and Eve players can be part of the same corp. DUST corps and Eve Corps are exactly the same thing.
* Text chat directly between eve chat channels and DUST chat channels will be supported using the keyboard on your PS-3. Keyboard play is not and will not be supported however.
* DUST and Eve Char names have to be unique because they share the same database.
* No sorry, your POD pilot can't be a DUST mercenary.
* DUST and Eve will share the same market. Eve Players will be able to buy and supply equipment to DUST mercenaries as part of the contract.
* You will never hire DUST "NPC's" they will always be real players
* DUST matches and the Eve Online MMO take place in the same real-time
* Orbital bombardments from Eve into DUST and vice versa are strongly hinted at.
* Hilmar was in Shanghai last month playing DUST in something approaching a workable beta release. Expect beta in much less than 6 months. Maybe even 6 weeks.

It doesn't take a great leap of imagination to see DUST and Eve sharing WiS but this doesn't appear anywhere in the Dev blogs and is likely to be technically "difficult" since Incarna and DUST are not using a common software platform - Incarna (and WoD) use Carbon, DUST uses Unreal.

Also, at the start, they plan to implement the dust link as something that is part of sov mechanics, allowing for dust-bunny deployment as an alternative means of taking over a system or something along those lines. PI colonies are going to be 'safe' for now.
Also considering the cost of a PI colony and the simple fact that anyone can set up anywhere(except in sov space), there really isn't much reason to fight over PI colonies.
Oh. you spent 100M to have my colony wiped out somewhere.. I'll just buy and deploy a new command center and trimmings.. oh dearie me, I just spent 10M...

Do you have a source for that claim?

The story I heard was that the DUST-EVE link would allow either game to continue without the other.

Bugs are not an enigma to console gamers.

Yes, one game continues without the other. Why does that imply that you would need NPC's? Rather it would imply that if there are no DUST mercs to attack and defend an Eve objective then it wont matter to Eve sovereignty.

That works too :)
