Hello Everyone, and Happy Father’s Day to those dads out there 

Since I got up a little earlier than usual this morning and have a little time to spare from my busy schedule, I’d like to share a little story about how recent trends in this game have affected me and my family.

First a little background on me. I am a fairly wealthy audiologist. I live in an upscale neighborhood in California. I consider myself to be very lucky for the things I have and how well things have worked out for me. I’m not concerned about the cost vs. benefit on paying for a subscription on this game, or buying the occasional PLEX; I spend this much per day just on lattes. Concepts such as “ISK/hour” and such are not things I care about as I play for fun and to relax. I make plenty of real money so, as long as I’m enjoying myself, the 15 USD per month is chump change to me.

However, I have a teenage nephew who lives on the East Coast who doesn’t share the same fortune as I do. He lives in a very dangerous inner city neighborhood where going out to play ball or skateboard can get him shot. He spends most of his spare time inside playing video games. I even told his mother several months ago that he was welcome to come stay with me so he could concentrate on making good grades in school rather than simply making it to school in one piece. His mother is a wonderful woman, but stubborn and proud so she respectfully declined the offer.

Therefore, he and I use online games to easily keep in touch. He loves sci-fi and I used to play Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, so this game is the perfect opportunity for us to maintain a relationship with each other from across the country. We mostly mined and did a little PI and the occasional mission. Together we scraped enough for him to buy a PLEX each month to keep his sub. But with the recent ship “balancing”, increased dangers in hi sec by gankers, and inflated PLEX prices it’s become harder and harder for either of us to continue playing. My absence of late has unfortunately compounded my nephew’s problems in being able to afford his monthly PLEX.

Recently he has given up on mining and mission running. Instead, he has been stealing from wrecks and cargo containers and selling the loot in trade hubs. He’s been doing this in frigates or cheap industrial ships since he can’t afford anything better. It makes him a lot more ISK than his previous activities, but along with it comes the added risk of being a suspect. Eventually, he was caught stealing a wreck in Jita, and got blown up and podded, losing some implants along with the ship/modules.

So, the other day, instead of playing EVE, my nephew decides to go to the playground in his neighborhood and shoot some hoops. Well guess what? He got jumped by some thugs. Now his mom’s calling me and asking if she could still take me up on my offer because she’s afraid for his safely. Thanks CCP, you got my newphew’s *ss kicked and he’s moving to Bel Air.
