Forget player built stargates to access new parts of space - think nomadic, 'home fleet', type of travel, where you travel with your entire corporation, and fleet as you explore the unknown together! It would take a very long time to build this mothership, but when you do, you can use it to dock your ships in, store your things, like a regular stations, but it would MOVE.

So, when you logged off, your fleet would be in a different place, doing some related activity where all players involved with that mothership would partake in, and you would organically log in, and choose to partake in the activity.

For example, your mothership could be stopped at a rich belt the fleet has discovered while venturing into the unknown parts of space, past the current known universe. You would be undocking into a mining operation, with a lot of your fellow corporation players in Ventures, trying to strip those resources bare so they could resupply the mothership, as it can perform industrial resupply like a real station. Or, you could be in one of the scouting parties checking for enemy fleets or other escalation, or searching for possible other sites where the fleet can be headed!

You can also rat with the convoy, as they are mining, before moving on normally, while also providing them with security protection if there are ratting sites in these unknown (new) parts of space.

Perhaps the fleet has stopped at an ice belt, with all their harvesters out to replenish fuel for the ongoing journey. Or you stumble upon an ancient race bent on stopping such incursions into its domain.

There are a ton of things that could happen.

Plus! Imagine running into an enemy battleship gallactica styled fleet, doing the same operations you are, exploring unknown parts of EVE - you can either open communication channels and try to see if diplomacy is an option, or they may be out to raise those resources for themselves and possibly your fleet in the process! You could fight it out, Homeworld style!

You could be destroyed.

Why have player built stargates, when you could have moving stations that are actual behemoths compared to a titan, and serve as exploring base of operations while housing hundreds of players, with constantly changing goals and location. That is more exciting, I feel. :)

I watched the Fanfest keynote on google, and this is what I thought of when CCP Seagull spoke about player built stargates. Why not player built moving stations! Space is unknown and vast! We can see how far we can go, past the stargates, in (and with) a moving, living fleet.

Titans initially were supposed to be mobile stations. Unfortunately this had its issues and the exact same issues would be present with this idea. The amount of assets in a station, moving that around, its server node crashing stuff.

Not a new idea, one that has been ruled out by CCP a long time ago unfortunately.

Hi,

I'm not sure if you watched the keynote or not but that may no longer be true - they are working with some new tech and they are moving towards EvE 2.0 in the future, with the new stargates. "New space" - Who knows what is possible now, compared to what was possible a "long time ago"? Maybe things have changed on their end to allow for something like this.

They should keep it on the radar.

They said in the keynote, "see how far we can go", well.. This is what I see. :)
And it seems a lot of others see that as well. So maybe they can see it too, somehow, somewhere, in their new tech.

The reason why I'm saying this is:

They are simplifying "Dogma" a lot, the system they use that runs EVE and they plan to overhaul stations, POSes, everything, with the last being Corporations and Alliances - if they overhaul this stuff, new stuff is possible, that wasn't before - and this is one of the things they should definitely be keeping in mind.

It's a definitive aspect to sci-fi works, and one that would find a natural home in EvE.

Thanks for your input. :)
