How to avoid death when the warp gate bugs out?

Quick background:

Last night I was in low sec, I warp to a gate, and select jump. The jump starts, and the screen animation that plays between systems starts, and doesn't stop. I'm sitting there looking at the warp hole flying by for about 60 seconds. I try talking in local, and it appears I'm still in the same system I engaged the warp from, and have not moved over to the other system. I can't see my ship, I can't see any celestials in space (can't even move my camera) and my overview is completely blank. Just my luck, someone jumps through the gate, sees me sitting there, and starts firing. I still can't see anything in space, but I see the combat text scrolling, and my ship hp being shot to shreds. They blow me up, and now I'm in my pod, but I still can't see anything, can't re-activate the gate i'm next to, and can't warp to anything in space, can't even see anything in space, still only seeing the warp screen animation. They then pop my pod, 46 million in implants lost (yea i know, you laugh at the value, but it's 46 million that should have been easily avoidable, hell, the ship should have been easily avoidable by jumping through the gate I was sittting next too)

So my question is, what should I do when this happens? After talking to some people post pod destruction, they said if I closed my client, prior to being shot, my ship would have warpped off, and I would have been able to reload the game and come back in. But what if I did this while I was being fired on? Would my pod, having just been ejected into space, automatically warp off on it's own if I had shut down my client, despite my engagement timer, and hopefully avoiding the destruction of my implants?

Any and all clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.

Petition it. It's the only way to get a real answer from CCP.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Typically when a client disconnects randomly (client crash, etc) the ship will warp off to a random spot. Upon logging back in, you warp back to where you were. If it was indeed a client issue, and was still communicating to the server in some matter that you wouldn't warp off, you could try to terminate the client process via task manager (I believe this will simulate a client crash and e-warp).

However, this isn't something you should be doing, If you are frequently having this problem, you might want to run a check on the game install, or reinstall altogether. Beyond that you might need to do other troubleshooting. You can try to petition CCP to reimburse the loss due to game issues and see what they say.

It isn't an issue I've had often. But it's certainly a detriment to wanting to buy further implants.

Still wondering if anyone knows if my pod will try and warp off after being ejected from my ship if I force close my client.

Definitely a problem you should look into solving. Disconnecting your client will warp you off, but the gatecamp can still try to get a lock on you and blow you up. Even if you get away, if they are quick they can probe you down before your client logs you out (unlikely though).

I have experienced this once or twice. I generally try to "jump" again and that usually fixes it. The one time it did not I just closed the client and relogged.

How did you try to jump again? I couldn't select the warp gate or anything in space.

I had this happen in high sec the other day. I just logged off and back on and my ship warped back to the gate. Not sure if it works with an engagement timer though. Probably not.

I've had it (the warp gate issue) happen twice to me since I re-subbed a week or two ago. Don't remember it being a feature before, so not sure what to tell you. I have other connection problems (lots of socket closed issues), but I think that might be an issue with my wireless router.

I just hit the jump or warp button again. Generally I'm not clicking anything as soon as the jump animation starts so *something* is still selected somewhere.
